These kinds of threads have been done before, but I think they are interesting, so let's give it another go!

In this thread you post which of the series you think was best and worst in for example; Plot or characters. I'll begin, so you can understand what I mean;

Best Plot: ME1
Best Characters: ME1
Best Main Enemy (Geth in ME1, Collectors in ME2, and Reapers in ME3. Secondary elements like Cerberus or mercenaries does not count here.): ME2
Best Locations (Both hubs and non-hubs count): ME2
Best Atmosphere: ME1
Best Gameplay: ME3
Best Sidequests (UNC, N7): ME2
Best Narrative (The structure of The Story; The way it is presented): ME3
Best Exploration (I remind you all that exploration does not only consist of driving around in the Mako or Hammerhead): ME2

And then the worst, which can also mean least best if you want to;

Worst Plot: ME3
Worst Characters: ME3
Worst Main Enemy: ME1
Worst Locations: ME1
Worst Atmosphere: ME3
Worst Gameplay: ME1
Worst Sidequests: ME1
Worst Narrative: ME1
Worst Exploration: ME3

If you want to, you can also add the reason of why you choose as you do, but it is up to you. I might add my reasons tomorrow.

Worst Main Enemy: none, I thought all the 'main' enemies were quite alright, although if I had to name one it would be the catalyst, from ME3. 
Worst Locations: ME1
Worst Atmosphere: ME3
Worst Gameplay: ME1
Worst Sidequests: ME1
Worst Narrative: ME3, this is mainly because I feel that my Shepard is one depressed bastard, who should be a hell of a lot more lively. 
Worst Exploration: ME3

Gosh, it's interesting that ME 1 and ME 3 have the best and worst characters. Since the crew is mostly the same.

-I play ME1 primarily for the main story now
-I play ME2 for a general enjoyment, and most attachment to the secondary character journey
-I enjoy ME3 the most overall. However, as it is, I can't enjoy it above and beyond the others. If I end up correct about the plot, it might surpass ME1 on that (sorta), but ME2 still beats it in some areas, and I'll always have a nostalgia about ME1 and some of its design

I don't usually do these things, mostly because they're pretty extreme. Like black and white, with little context as to what it entails to be the best or worst in a certain category. Many of the categories have a huge effect on others. But I love each game in the Trilogy. I don't think any of the them is anything less than a great game in it's own right. But here's me just saying the first thing that comes to mind.


Best Plot: ME1
Best Characters: ME1
Best Main Enemy: ME3 (Reapers)
Best Locations (Both hubs and non-hubs count): ME1
Best Atmosphere: ME1 (the benchmark for the series)
Best Gameplay: ME3 (ME3's combat mechanics combined with ME1's open battlefields would be ideal for the next game)
Best Sidequests (UNC, N7): ME1 (these missions actually had a story to tell in the first game)
Best Narrative: ME1
Best Exploration: ME1 (let's be honest....there really wasn't any in the sequels. You just ran down corridors from point A to point



Worst Plot: ME2 (by far)

Worst Characters: ME2 (instead of a handful of characters that passed as realistic, we get a plethora of shallow, cliche, albeit colorful ones. More reminiscent of a comic book mashup)

Worst Main Enemy: ME2 (don't get me twisted, the Collectors are badass. They look awesome. They sound cool. They're the type of eery enigma I usually find in some of the better sci fi literature. However, they're completely unnecessary to the overall narrative of the trilogy)

Worst Locations: ME2 (besides the Collector Base at the Galactic core, the only other setting from ME2 that gets me as fully immersed as the other two games is visiting the Migrant Fleet for Tali's trial. Never liked Omega)

Worst Atmosphere: ME2

Worst Gameplay: ME1

Worst Sidequests: ME2

Worst Narrative: ME2 (pointless)

Worst Exploration: ME2 (nonexistent)

Worst Locations: ME1, because of the saminess - despite being better integrated between shooty bits and others
Worst Atmosphere: ME3
Worst Gameplay: ME1
Worst Sidequests: ME1
Worst Narrative: ME2
Worst Exploration: ME3

[teh DRUMPf!!]

Best Plot: ME1
Best Characters: ME1
Best Main Enemy: ME1 (geth, krogan, Saren's various followers).
Best Locations: ME2
Best Atmosphere: ME1
Best Gameplay: ME3
Best Sidequests: ME3 (but more needed).
Best Pacing: all suck ("race against time" element in all three, not taken seriously in any of them) but I'll say ME2.
Best Exploration: ME2.

Worst/least best:

Worst Plot: ME2
Worst Characters: ME2 (because quantity < quality)
Worst Main Enemy: ME2 (The Collectors should not have even existed)
Worst Locations: ME1
Worst Atmosphere: ME2
Worst Gameplay: ME1
Worst Sidequests: ME1
Worst Pacing: ME3.
Worst Exploration: ME3 (by default; it had none).

Best Plot: ME2 - I never looked at this as a single plot, but as a collection of short stories. It works well in this format.

Worst Plot: ME1 -- the flaws in this set up the ending to ME3, perhaps this is the source of the resentment. I know ME1 is the "holy grail" and I committed heresy.
Worst Characters: ME1 leading to gems like this from Shepard - "Asari can reproduce with each other?" ... really?
Worst Main Enemy: Reapers 
Worst Locations: ME1 - unfortunately they didn't all look like British Columbia like we're used to seeing on television.... that was a joke.
Worst Atmosphere: ME3
Worst Gameplay: ME1 - although I did like sniping and looting geth from a mile away.
Worst Sidequests: ME3, point + click = I found the rings of alune
Worst Narrative: ME3, I lost my Shepard during act 1. The narrative completely breaksdown in the final five minutes.
Worst Exploration: ME3 - what exploration?

Actually from a plot standpoint they were all quite weak. Two had no real plot. What was the plot to ME1 It was this big rush to stop Saren before he reached the Conduit and let the reapers into the galaxy. However, you could take your sweet time about it because Saren apparently was just tooling about the galaxy in this giant warship and no one was paying any attention to him. And lo and behold "Damn! Shepard just found the Conduit! Sovereign! We'd better get our asses over there right now! Geth! Attack the Citadel!" 

3? Let's build a superweapon to stop the reapers. That's it. Then talk to starbrat in the end and find out that no matter what you do you lose.

So 2? It was more of a collection of short stories, than a single plot. If you look at it in that sense it worked.

IMO, it goes like this.

Best Main Plot: ME1 (ME2 has the best branches IMO. Character quests and main missions are the best for ME2)
Best Characters: ME2 (Personal Favorites: Miranda, Mordin, Thane, Legion, Samara, and Kasumi. I do think the character count could have been lessened and the characters given greater focus, but otherwise, it excelled here)
Best Main Enemy: ME1 (Saren, though TIM counts I suppose, even though I view him as an anti-villain and sympathetic)
Best Locations: ME2
Best Atmosphere: ME2
Best Gameplay: ME2
Best Sidequests: ME2 (As stated above)
Best Narrative: N/A (This is hard to really objectify since they all change to a degree)
Best Exploration: ME1 (I honestly liked all the planets. I felt like I really was on a frontier of space)

Worst Plot: ME3
Worst Characters: ME3 (I disliked ME1's team to begin with. However, ME3 doesn't have Wrex to lessen my dislike for the team, and I dislike EDI a lot more than I dislike Kaidan, who died in ME1. Javik and James are the only ME3 squadmates I like)
Worst Main Enemy: ME3 (Who is the main enemy anyway?)
Worst Locations: N/A (ME1's bad locations are relentlessly bad, while the good locations are excellent, whereas ME3 is consistently mediocre, with a few decent locations)
Worst Atmosphere: ME3
Worst Gameplay: ME1
Worst Sidequests: ME3 (What sidequests? You mean scan-and-fetch?)
Worst Narrative: ME3 (Streamlines the narrative, and shatters the entire trilogy narrative in the ending)
Worst Exploration: ME3 (What Exploration?)
