If we follow the Star Wars three act structure for the Mass Effect Trilogy, the second act is suppose to be the darkest where the protagonists are at their lowest points and are put into the worst possible situations.

Mass Effect 2....ehh not really the darkest or the edgiest.

Yeah, I wouldn't call a story where you fly around in a luxury space yacht to solve daddy issues for a bunch of costumed superheroes and fight color coded sesame street mercs to be "dark" or "edgy". Not to mention, that the "story" treats Shepard's death like an afternoon nap.

Well.. I guess the thread is done. David's here, ready to randomly lambast people over minor stuff like it's the end of the world and turn a casual Sunday night thread into a 30 page flamefest. Time to get a beer.

Which is disappointing since, you know, that was a bunch of the talk prior to ME2's release. Dark second chapter with choices with consequences yadda yadda yadda. It quickly went memetic on the BioBoards.

For all the talk of being out in the Terminus and its reputation, the only are that even came close wasOmega, and even then it wasn't really breaking any new ground for Bioware, they've always got at least one seedy area per game.

EDIT: Although I'll give them this, they made up for it a little with the DLC. Overlord is easily one of the darker things Bioware's ever done.

I agree that the daddy issues are overdone (and parental issues, if you count Thane and Samara), but those weren't my favorite quests anyways.. so I won't go out of the way to defend them. I liked Mordin's, Legion's, Grunt's, and Jack's the most. And Zaeed's autodialogue and loyalty mission was pretty screwed up as well. He's pretty common archetype in movies, but not so much in games.

Problem is, regardless of whether good or bad, they wasted large resources on things that ultimately had little to no bearing on the collector plot or the overrall plot.  Furthermore, the things that DID have relevance to the latter were ultimately gimped by the completely optional nature of them (like Mordin's LM, which also had some of the best writing in the series and is one of the few examples of genuine sci-fi) and of the disposable mook nature of the squadmate in question.

What was also disapointing was the complete inconsistency of the Terminus as described in 1 with what we ultimately got(three sesame street merc gangs and a club owner/slum lord).

I had issues with various things of Overlord's plot(more Cerb idiot ball holding, cheap shock anvil at the end, etc) but the horror atmosphere in it and the gameplay was nice.

I wonder if they're trying to say something... err.. more significant with all of the daddy issue stuff. Even the ME1 crew had similar issues, outside Kaidan (afaik).

Spray and pray with connecting to the audience, since family issues are pretty common.

And yeah, it's far from only being a thing in ME2.

James is another with Daddy issues. Luckily, he doesn't talk about it much.

It's funny, since I tend to play Colonist or Earthborn. I like Loner/Jaded Shep. I don't think he's all that qualified to play family counselor. And that's why I like Jack. She's one of the few characters who relied on themselves in a similar manner. The others that I like a lot coincidentally didn't bring family things up much (Mordin, Zaeed, Grunt.. kind of. Grunt talked about Okeer. He just didn't care about him).

Meh, makes sense, but since a good portion of people use videogames as an escape, that could backfire.

Ehhh, stable family households don't produce eccentric people-killers as much as unstable fusterclucks of homes do.

Uh, no. 'Daddy issues' are not there for the purpose of connecting characters to the audience by similarities. That's silly.

I like how Shepard has to rely on a bunch of people whose individual psychological states are not conducive to the success of the mission.

By that point, Shepard has the option of quite literally being responsible for genocide and recklessly mowing down Zhu's Hope. That's nothing but loose change, isn't it?
