It's so funny, isn't it? Half the people here have gleefully shrieked of heroism as a 'power fantasy.' And here I am attempting to make clear the very obvious fact that heroism is lonely. And they're the ones who desperately argue otherwise.

If that's what people call heroism, I would disagree with them.

I consider "power fantasy" specifically applying to power.. like how much oversight or control one has over big situations. ME3 did this a lot. For the kind of game it is at least. I'm changing huge millenia old galactic sized issues with TPS mechanics, basically. I'm not knocking it, but it's a hell of a lot more power fantasy than rescuing Feros colonists or something (which is still extraordinary itself).

In any case, there are doubtless some counterexamples. It's to be expected. Not every writer is honest.

Ah, yes.

If the writer doesn't conform to Davey's incredibly myopic and ignorant vision, they're "dishonest".

Is it too much to hope that he was joking with that? No? Alright. Well I'll be over here shaking my head.

FYI, David: We're not disputing that certain stories have lonely heroes. That's a common trope.

But it's certainly not a universal trait.

Something about naming the best and worst elements of ME. We were doing pretty good a couple pages back. Then a wild David appeared.

Also, is this the part where I admit the only exposure I have to Persona is Two Best Friends/Sisters?

I love how this makes the argument even worse. No family? Riiight...

The female characters aren't showing enough characterization.

Needs more catsuits. For Naoto. The heroism.

And unzipped/unbuttoned cleavage.

Yes! Preferably Naoto. She has the biggest boobs of the main females. Teddie is a god among men for getting her medical records so the player could figure that out.

Unfortunately, honest writing is not universal. But the same could be said of any element of stories.

Well, ME2 has the most daddy issues. In fact, a good chunk of the game is dedicated to solving them. ME3 probably has the best in terms of how few of them there are. Vega has some daddy issues, but weren't those issues portrayed in the comics mostly?

Yes. Honest writing. Heroes follow certain traits. Instinctively, inevitably, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. Traits that audiences recognize. Honest writing respects such traits. Mass Effect is thankfully very honest.

If you want a counter-example, look to Twilight. People hate Edward Cullen because he's a supposed 'hero' who fails to follow though on traits. He's dishonest. When you read criticism of twilight, people make up all kinds of silly reasons of why Edward is so bad. Watching Bella sleeping, for example, when romance fiction is full of male 'heroes' who have done far, far worse. The real reasons are more subtle.

More like an improper use of a fallacy, considering that your comparison is an irrelevant conclusion (ignoratio elenchi). You're missing the point that I was making to begin with: I'm saying it's impossible to objectively qualify ME2's plot based on preference and bias, with you obviously being against it, and myself for it. It's also an inconsistent comparison, since we obviously have different criteria for how we measure the game.

I understood your point perfectly well; it's you who is having trouble understanding. My argument was showing how ridiculous the notion that one can't objectively assess the worth of any given work of fiction is.

It's also an inconsistent comparison, since we obviously have different criteria for how we measure the game.

Some criteria are superior to others.

And you've defeated your own argument by presenting my preference for ME2 as something that makes me seem moronic. An appeal to ridicule. I'm not attacking your opinion, so this really is unjustified.

I was attacking your argument, not you. Pay more attention.

I take it that you think people who think differently about different subjects than you aren't worth your mental effort?

Only if the person's position is asinine.

I believe your mixing up the word honest with "generic".

Mass Effect 1 had the best Plot, the best sense of exploration, and generally the best atmosphere of the trilogy. The combat however was unbalanced...yet fun anyway. In other words, it's like pretty much any troika game ever.

Mass Effect 2 nailed the combat farther and refined pieces under the hood. Storyline took a dive and focused on characters instead - which is one of its highest marks. It also had some great mission ideas, the suicide mission in particular.

Lastly, Mass Effect 3's combat was the best, with its story the worst(see every ending thread made over the last 18 months or so). Great Set Pieces, and graphically it has the best engine. Characters were easily the weakest of the 3 - we got old companions, a sexified robotic old companion, and a body builder who you apparently already knew before ME3. Since 2007, the quality of story and overall plot has been sucked out of the game and has been replaced with entertaining combat. They're all great games, but for dramatically different reasons. It's like playing a sequel to V:tmB that has top notch combat, but was written by capcom instead of troika.

And here I was thinking people hated twilight because it was a sh*tty teen romance novel which portrayed relationships in an unrealistic and rather silly manner.
