Because in the original game a triple class like F/M/C can't get 9th level spells, so the devs didn't include the option to select mage HLA's.WaterMane wrote...
Any idea as to why this is?
To "fix" this (and get a totally overpowered triple class), go to your BG2 overide folder, find the file lufmc.2da, open with notepad and edit the column below "icon" full of "GA_SPHLAXX" (or something like that).
Replace a HLA that you don't want (i.e. GA_SPCL902 - deathblow, GA_SPCL903 - greater deathblow, GA_SPCL904 - resist magic) with a mage HLA that you do want (GA_SPWI921 - Improved alacrity, GA_SPWI922 - dragon's breath, GA_SPWI923 - planetar)... or you could do it the lite way and just go with the extra 6, 7 and 8 mage level slots (AP_SPCL928, AP_SPCL929, AP_SPCL930).

LUFT0.2da is actually the HLA choice table for fighter/thieves (these 2da files are acronyms like Level Up Fighter Thief, Level Up Fighter Mage Cleric etc.). You'll probably want to revert those changes if you play a fighter/thief sometime...WaterMane wrote...
Thanks for the reply Polytope. I could not locate the file lufmc.2da in my baldur's gate 2 override folder. I was able to find a file called LUFT0.2da with the column and HLA's you described. I tried replacing a couple of the HLA's as you suggested(replacing deathblow and resist magic with improved alacrity and dragon's breath), being careful to copy them exactly, but after saving the file, closing it, and opening up BG2 I did not see any difference in the level up menu, the same high level abilities are displayed as before I tried to edit the file. I also tried restarting my computer but that didn't help any either. Any thoughts on how to proceed?
If you don't have the LUFMC.2da file in your overide you'll need to get it. I found a copy here, which includes the mage high level abilities.
You'll also need to open the file LUABBR.2da, and for the line FIGHTER_MAGE_CLERIC under the ABBREV column write FMC (this points the game to offer a F/M/C HLA's listed under LUFMC.2da).
LUABBR.2da may not be visible in your override folder (it's a core game file). If it isn't, you'll need to download Near Infinity to edit it.
