When the reapears returned from dark space and wiped out galatic civilization (The Protheans) did they skip over earth and humanity? I understand at the time humans were still likely banging two rocks together to make fire but from what I understand the reapers wipe out all life in the galaxy. (lol im kind of curious how giant robo-squids track down all life myself but that's a question for another time)
Or is it one of those questions that's to be answered in Mass Effect 2 or even 3?
Any help explaining this is appreciated.
Just an unanswered question.

One assumes they only harvest sentient life, and we were beneath their notice at the time.

It's a secret.

It was pretty much answered in ME1 If you whern't a space faring species and very primitive.... as in not capable of lighting a fire with two sticks, then that species was pretty much in the clear. It was mentioned somewhere in the old forums once that the Hanarr were around when the mass annihlation came around for the Protheans. I'll go hunt down the Hanarr codex now to see if that's true or not.

The extinction cycles about every 50,000 years, and it obviously take much longer for sentient life to evolve out of non-sentient species. It's probable that they just harvest those species with a high enough level of technology.

They harvest technologically advanced races not drooling neanderthals. They do that so that in 50,000 years time there will be a new advanced species.

they harvest all advanced life; i wouldnt put it past them, but tracking down every single living cell in the galaxy is incredibly difficult and not worth their time; they wouldnt be wating for so long if they just needed to kill life in general. the real question is why the frak they kill only civilized life and what do they get from it; but that aint going to be answered til ME3.

Ahh interesting. A couple of things.
Pluto is a Mass Relay (That was encased in ice) and Mars was an outpost for Prothean Science? (To study...us?) That's right next door to earth! Did the novels ever explain what happened to the Protheans on Mars?
I could see a reaper doing a fly over earth and saying "Mrrr...I got dibs in 50'000 years!"

It seems like the reapers need organic life for some reason. Other wise they would have destroyed the whole galaxy.

I thought it was pretty clear that they only take civilizations at "the apex of their existance" or some such line. Sovereign said something along those lines.
I think that implies that only space faring, mass relay using species who had activated or had some connection to the Citadel (as thats where the Reapers get their info) are harvested.

I think some people are getting sentience confused with sapience.
A dog is sentient. It can 'sense'. It can interact with others and it's environment. It can feel...sadness, happiness, etc. However that doesn't mean it is intelligent.
A Human is sapient. We can rationalize and are self-aware. Aka intelligence...apparently...
Big difference I guess. Yeah I know I just came off pretty smug there, but I'm really a nice guy, true story!
On topic: 50,000 years ago humans were a bunch of scattered nomad/hunter gatherer types (I think?), the reapers had no need to wipe us out and most likely had no means of detecting us.

I doubt even the reapers would have technology capable of singling out one planet (which is not emitting any radio/microwave/etc signals which may indicate intelligent life) in one star system in a galaxy of billions upon billions of star systems.
Even if they did have this technology, wat would be the point? Any species at that stage of development would not be very high on their "species to exterminate" list.
/My two cents

I think it says somewhere in-game that they use census records from the Citadel to hunt down each pocket of advanced life.

well some protheans were able to hide....
so they didnt do a perfect job.
So maybe they dont have that kind of tech but you would think that giant machines who destroys all advanced life all the time would have done a better job and checked every single little place...

I assumed that they followed all of the active relays and killed anything in nearby systems. According to the codex the Charon relay was actually Charon (Pluto's Moon) but we found the relay inside. I don't think an inactive Mass Relay can be activated from the other side if it's encased in ice but that's supposition.
