Look, I like big weapons. If an RPG lets me use a two-handed weapon, I usually do so. Still, the hafts on the hammers and battle axes of the Dragon Age games are a little excessive. Bloom in DA2, for instance, is a very sexy model, but I wish the haft was about 25% shorter. They could also use some more unique animations in the case of killing folks with them in cutscenes and the like.

What do you guys think?

I think this should be extended to swords as well. Especially the two-handers.

Some of those things look like they were purchased at a Final Fantasy yard sale.

I think daggers are the biggest offenders when it comes to needing to be shrunk down.

Agreed. They're more like short swords than daggers.

Gonna disagree on the hammers. The mauls and axes like Bloom have been some of my favorite weapons in the games. Half the entertainment value of having my female city elf use the Chasind Great Maul in DA:O was the fact that it appeared to be larger than she was.

I think they should make the two-handed weapons much, much bigger. Characters who equip them will be bent double under the weight and forced to move extremely slowly. Occasionally they will lose their balance and fall backwards, at which point players will be forced to wiggle the joystick back and forth in order to have the character rock back onto their feet like a turtle.

Sure and let's have mages get burned hands from their fire spells..:bandit:

Has anybody here ever played Demons Souls/Dark Souls? There are some massive weapons in that game, but if you equip them, you'll find your attack speed reduced drastically, as well as your build-up and recovery time before and after attacks. Further still, you can equip them even if you don't have enough strength, but will struggle to use them properly. I wouldn't mind some little touches like that on the huge weapons.

Personally, seeing characters in DA2 swing greatswords around like they were made of foam somehow didn't do it for me.

Most of the greatswords are actually pretty reasonable, and not too far from real life claymores.

Reeling with pain, they fall backwards, at which point players will be forced to wiggle the joystick back and forth in order to have the character rock back onto their feet like a turtle.

Noooooo! Mauls need to stay huge. How else can I pretend my protags are Meru from Legend of Dragoon? ;___; Elf Arcane Warrior w/ Mauls ftw!

Agreed with OP. Bio should diminish the size of all weapons but expecially two handed weapons. Such ridiculous sizes belong to kiddie games.

What's wrong with 'kiddie' games?

Some of the best games I play now are "kiddie games". And some of my favourite films and books are for younger audiences too.

Good gameplay and storytelling have no age limit.

I honestly never had any problems with two-handed weapons the way they are. I don't think they look so large, and I'm actually glad that they don't imitate their real life selves.

Having said that, I do see a problem with how in-game characters handle them. It's like they're so weightless. One good example would be when you ask Mikhael Dryden to make the two-handed Starfang for you. During the cutscene of him making the Starfang and giving it to you, it seems as though he's not affected by the sword's weight at all. Same goes for many other scenes or parts in the game, it just seems unnatural.

So if anything needs to be done, it is the mechanics of how the two-handed weapons are handled in the game. Somebody mentioned Dark Souls, which is a great example of how the handling of weapons change depending on how large they are.

You ever hear of puppeteer? It's a game on the ps3, came out this year. I suggest checking it out, it's good.

I think the reason the weapons are so long is because the animations for hammers, mauls and battleaxes are the same, and so they have to have roughly the same dimensions- the haft of the mauls and axes have to be roughly the same length as the blade of the greatsword.

Absolutely nothing. DA however is supposed to be a mature game.

I agree that a lot of the issue for me is how easily those massive things are waved about. Seeing lanky little Fenris throw Hayder's Razor around like it's a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon made of candy floss is a little bit jarring.
