I know just the remarks that call him less talented, bad, superior female Shepherd, monotone, terrible... I have no problem if you like her better, good on you. But the attacks against Meer are unwarranted.

I actually think he did a great job and his voice always gets me ready to go back and save the Universe.

LOL. She wants to see more female Shepard in ME promotions :)

She has such a delicious voice.  Jesus.  Her native accent is about what fem shep's is.

You know, I almost forget that there's a female Shepard.  Why does Bioware do that?  It's ridiculous.

I know this thread wasn't specifically about comparing Hale with Meer (or FemShep voice acting vs. MaleShep voice acting), but it looks like it's turned into that so I guess I'll chip in with my own opinion. :)

I'm a guy, but I play Mass Effect as FemShep all the time -- I simply cannot stand Mark Meer's voice. These are the words I'll use to describe the male Shepherd's voice acting: flat, monotone, uninspired, unemotional, boring, grating, empty. Maybe he was directed to act this way (although I doubt it listening to Jennifer Hale), but Mark Meer sounds like he's basically reading lines off the script in the most boring flat way possible! I'm not just talking about the military/fighting scenes where you probably do want to say things in a direct assertive way -- but even the emotional, one-on-one conversations.

Compare this with Jennifer Hale's acting and it's like NIGHT and DAY. Female Shepherd expresses emotion in every line she says, whether it's during a fight, during an intimate moment, or in conversation with aliens. You know how your Shepherd feels from the way she speaks, which is so important in voice-driven RPG's like Mass Effect. There's depth and emotion in her acting -- she brings inspiration when needed during her speeches, anger & contempt in the Renegade dialogues, and compassion in the Paragon ones.

Like so many others here (possibly a majority?), I really can't speak highly enough of Jennifer Hale's work on Mass Effect. She is the #1 reason I only play FemShep in Mass Effect -- yes it has that big an effect on my game experience.

And us FemShep fans speak out loudly like this because partly we want Bioware to hear us. Think of this as constructive feedback. :)

BioWare hates women.

This made my night. Thanks for the link. I have to disagree also about her delivering Renegade lines. She made me smile whenever she was in Chora's Den and told that bounty hunter dude to give her the information she wanted or she'd blow his kneecaps off...something to that effect. Hale is awesome as Paragon or Renegade.

I'd like more Femshep, Bioware!!!

NOTE (BEFORE MORDIGAN BLOWS A GASKET): THIS IN MY OPINION ONLY, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT I THINK EVERYONE THAT LISTENS TO MEER ARE QUEER. (ALSO, THAT RHYMED!)
Notenote: I don't have anything against queer people. It was meant as a funny. You know, the ones that comedians do for a living.=]

Yeah, you're definitely from Europe Image IPB

What I've heard of ME2, it seems Mark Meer is doing better. He is not a slouch voice actor, but his Shepard character isn't all that expressive. I find that it's fine when you get used to it, like I have, and you sort of ignore his voice and just read emotions by what he's saying.

But yeah. I'm overall more satisfied with the femshep dialogues. "I Remember Me" is especially good.  Some of her Renegade lines are slightly cringe-worthy, but at least the intimate moments aren't like trying to hear a whisper over clanging pots and pans.  (Slight exaggeration)

<3 I love Jennifer Hale. I do so wish they would at least do some promotional work with FemShep. Owell, we will scream for more FemShep for Mass Effect 3 promo's and maybe we'll get lucky and actually get it.

Thanks for the links.

I've played both Shepards and felt that I preferred her voice acting. She puts a lot of feeling it. Great voice actress. :)

The thing I don't really get is that I feel BioWare really missed an opportunity here. Voice-acting aside, they had a chance to have a video game IP with a really strong female character as their promotional lead who was strong, confident and kickass, and still sexy but not in that over-the-top fanservicey manner that most female heroines in games are. Instead, they decided to go with a rather generic male hero as their poster boy. That's their choice I guess, but I actually think that Femshep would have made a stronger and more original marketing lead.

You're right. Renegade Femshep is miles above Maleshep in ME1. She's the Joan Jett from outer space. Jennifer rocks!!! :o

I couldn't agree with you more, Terror_K. They could've had "kick-ass, yet human female lead" but instead went the bland "bald space marine" route. Shame on marketing.

Well, it doesn't matter. As long as get to play as FemShep in-game, everything's solid. :)

I found the interview boring, but she is a woman who really has a passion for what she does.

I thought the interview was fantastic and light years better then what we see from some of the front line websites.

Also, I don't think I could love Jen Hale more then I do right now. I would marry her and have 10 000 of her babies.

funny because for me it's the total opposite - hale was very flat in mass effect 1 and a lot of her lines sounded like they were out of context, when the clearly shouldn't have been. especially with renegade options she just sounded completely wrong.

it's a shame because i do like hale - she's done a lot of good work in games that i have liked (and she's had a bigger VO career than most so far), but she was wrong for fem shep.

Jennifer Hale just dropped Claudia Black's name.

I am so going to look for her voice now.... <3.

Heh, I noticed that too. I'm getting suspicious, she was in my two favourite games last year (DA and Uncharted), and now she's, apparently, in Mass Effect 2. Luckily she was amazing in both those games, so I have I expectations this time.

Tara Strong. She has great range.

Personally I hated, hated FemShep's voice. It was too butch and I wanted to punch her everytime she talked. I hated that, especially since Jennifer Hale is very talented. I think she could've done better.

Great interview. Awesome find, OP :)

I was always going to play a femShep first, and this has just cemented that idea. I'm currently grinding through a dudeShep paragon playthrough on my PC to set up the save and it just really, really is a chore!

Disclaimer: I do not hate Mark Meer, I've seen/heard him in other things and he's very likeable, but the VO direction he seems to have received for ME1 seems to be either: "More flat!" or "More macho!"

Shame, really.

Hathur wrote...

Just finished listening. I feel for Hale, female Shepard needs more recognition.

Bioware did a great job making a female lead character who isn't some sexualized bimbo. Frankly, female Shepard is the epitome of a strong, female story character who still remains feminine yet isn't cheapened because of her gender. She's every bit as belieavable as a leader as male Shepard is.

So many games today use pathethic over-sexualization of female characters.. mass effect never treats female Shepard this way and it's refreshing.

As a guy, I always had great admiration for female Shep. Moreso than male Shep even.

QFT.

BioWare - please revisit your marketing and kindly focus just a bit on femShep and what Hathur said. It's actually quite an accomplishment in the games industry and I think you'd do a lot to alleviate the fears of some longtime fans that you've sold out to mindless action games, if you did this.

LOL I find that so funny too because, if you heard that interview with Hale then you'll realize that, I think (Not having heard all of her roles) That Femshep's voice is the closest I've heard to her actual voice. Like you could hear Femshep in the interview, just like you could male-shep in Meer's.

I personally LOVE Femshep's voice. :P

Personally, I think they are great for different types of Shep-personalities. Yes man-Shep doesn't come across as emotional as fem-Shep, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's worse, and it doesn't necessarily make him come across as 'generic space marine' (I don't like them either). Some people just don't wear their emotions on their sleeves, and some characters don't fit a voice that sounds like they're gonna gush their emotions everywhere. My main man-Shep for instance is a Spacer Sole Surviver, he's a good man but has seen some things that he doesn't like to think about, and this combined with how I have made him look with the voice has made him come across like a sort of young Picard-esque character.

In fact, considering how many of the people complain about man-Shep mention his baldness and how they are fed up with the generic space marine character I wonder how much of people's perceptions are being coloured by the default appearance of man-Shep? I play primarily with custom faces that make him look more thoughtful and clean shaven, but I bet many people mainly see only the default version that is indeed the 'generic space marine' archetype. If you think about how the voices are done in other games involving generic space marine characters, most of them are the shouty type, constantly bawling into the mic and being the 'angry man', or taking the ****** in a jock sort of way, man-Shep doesn't do that and so generic space marine doesn't really apply I feel.

I actually kinda like we haven't heard anything of FemShep. Hearing Male Shep in some of the previews I get an idea of some of the dialog, but I haven't heard any of it with FemShep. Makes the dialog feel a bit more fresh when I ultimately play the game (if that makes any sense).

My feelings exactly!Image IPB
