I found the great oak and agreed to get his acorn from the hermit.   Now, i've run across the hermit and got the acorn, but there is something in his stump.  If you try to get it, the Hermit goes ape**** and demolishes my party pretty quickly..   Any suggestions as to how to beat the hermit?    I am an elf ranger, i currently have Sten (2hand brawler), Alistiar (tank), and Morrigen (damager) as my group's setup..    Is it worth it to kill the hermit?

no one in the brecilian forest? =( seems everyone on the forums has chosen human / dwarf warriors.. I am thinking a 2hand melee hero would have been much easier =/.

He can be bribed, if you have unusual items to trade.

Not as cool as you'd think. That's just one of the ways to get the acorn if you've got nothing to trade him. That hermit doesn't take too kindly to people messing with his things; he's a little paranoid.

I traded for each item as well..saved and messed in his stump..which he didn't like. I was tempted to kill him for XP and such but since I am not evil, I couldn't do it :(

I cant get the acorn either... and I just killed him... oops

What a fail waste of 10 minutes worth of dialogue just to kill the guy and not get the quest item.

I think the Jedi had some rather smart words regarding resorting to anger...

It was "Only get violent if you really want to or are really, really bored", right?

Funny I went back to him after I've been to werewolf lair because I've forgotten the helmet.

Of course he wouldn't speak to me because I gave the acorn I traded him for to the Grand Oak but I can mess with the stump as much as I like (actually it's Zevran who does it - because he has "experience with the dark holes" according to him ;), sadly there's only a golden ring in it. So I guess no way for me to get the helm

Ugh, guess I was wrong... went back to the tree to see if he told me anything else and I had the option to say "Is this the acorn you're looking for?" and I get the quest completion...

So I guess killing him and looting his corpse does give you the item.

WIN.

There's something else in the stump after you've gotten the acorn and traded for everything. I can't recall what it was, but I do remember if you have zevhran in your party while you look at the stump, he'll offer to steal it for you.

My first run-through, (good human sheild& weapon,)  I looked in the stump, he attacked, so I killed him.  (since he attacked me, I felt justified)

My 2nd run-through (evil elf Blood Mage), I foolishly killed Treebeard, so when I got to the Hermit, the story wouldn't let me kill him!!!  (can't remember, but was hoping he had some cool magic stuff)

Can't even remember what I did to get him to release the forcefield come to think of it...
