On to your other point, yes the ending is very easy even on Nightmare. Of course all of the Darkspawn in the first area are meant to be fodder but the Archdemon was pretty laughable.

I killed off 35 of the Dwarves, 4 Elves, and 1 mage. The Humans from Redcliffe all survived.
Not to mention the fact that Arl Eamon bit the dust and had to be revived.....

golden dragon, how did you manage that i was only able to use one group at a time untill they all died . Then i was able to call the next group did i miss something ?
I used NO troops against the Generals themselves. Only me and my companions (varies).
In the Defend the Gates segment, I used the Redcliffe Soldiers. NO fatalities.
In the Palace District, I used the Dwarves (15 survived).
In the Fort Drakon District, I used the Elves (Most survived).
In the Final Battle against the Archdemon, I used the Mages. 1 Mage and Arl Eamon perished. Eamon was revived at the end.
Hey! It worked, and the Grey Wardens are supposed to kill the Archdemon at ANY COST...

I usually get Irving and Eamon.
I, too, got the achievement for preserving the lives of half the defenders at the gate. WHen I used absolutely NO additional forces.
EDIT to answer your edit: I didn't. I used one force per area. the Dwarves were used only in the Palace District, for example.

i was saying in contex of i could of just not done the dwarfs at all because i diddnt use them in the end battle
Those quests should all have the option of telling the prospective allies to go screw themselves. You could just lie to Eamon about how you got all the allies you needed, after you told everyone in the kingdom you didn't need them. Resulting in the worst possible ending - The Archdemon wins! It would go down in history as the route of Denerim.

I thought "okay, these are normal group of mobs, I guess there will be a place where I'll need reinforcements, like a BIG group of mobs"...before I knew it, I was fighting archdemon, so I called mages not because I needed help, but because I could and I wondered how it worked.
Speaking of it, I had dwarves, elves, arl's soldiers and mages. But there was one slot empty. Which groups can you recruit? I believe you can recruit werewolfs INSTEAD OF elves.. Eamon's soldiers are always there I guess. Maybe templar? Or golems? Are they alternatives or can be used with others?

The troops at the end are literally useless, on my last playthrough i had gatherd all possible ally but not donated a single thing to the crates so i could test the system out.
First shot, gave all the sides everything they requested - bought all runes from shops/removed all mine for the mages, all gems to dwarves, elf donations are easier since you can buy them in unlimited so i bought about 100 golds worth along with giving them all the things i had collected for them in the world over the game and gave 500 gold to the humans.
Tested all the allys in each of the 'end battles' with both my save file where i had poured an entire games worth of items/wealth into them and a save where i had given nothing to any of the sides
The biggest difference ? about 1-4 less unit losses on the call-in-allies sides in any of the final battles.
Save your runes/gems/gold/ingredients for yourself!
