Does one of the books mention biotic power levels? Assuming it's not Deception. If one does, I think she might just be naturally on the higher end of that scale. @Xil. I make a more theoretical argument, since I assume that carbine variants of some of the assault rifles must exist out of sight. Currently, the SMGs in game are more what you would call micro-SMGs, like the Uzi and the MP5K. If Liara was using something more like a Personal Defence Weapon like a P90, then yes, I think that would make her a fairly logical squadmate. And if she really did have good training with her biotics, and if she was working on her drills when back on the Normandy, then it's not inconceivable that she could be valuable in combat, particularly if there's a canonical reason for her powers and the strength of them.
What Would You have Changed About Your Favorite Character(s)?

Ah, the missed opportunities of Mass Effect. How to get Ash more accustomed to working with aliens? Make her train one.

I don't apply real life military know-how to Mass Effect. As I said, it's a power fantasy RPG about role-playing, not a military simulation.
Well, we're not exactly going to get a proper eight man section with Manoeuvre Support providing direct fire support from the flank, but a little internal consistency shouldn't be too much of a problem.
And anybody who so much as read the codex is going to be bursting into hysterical laughter at Ash being a lieutenant commander because rank structure doesn't work that way.

That would indeed be interesting (although don't they have totally different weapons?), although I honestly do not think that Liara is a Mary Sue.Made Nightwing wrote...
@Xil. There's a great fic by LogicalPremise on ff.net that gives a very interesting explanation for why Liara is so powerful, (and it manages not to Mary Sue her all over again, so that's good). Check it out, it's an awesome one.

Do not. Get me. Started.
Bad enough Jay butchered Miranda, he also butchered the only character with a hint of multiple dimensions.

To be a completely qualified infantryman (at least in Australia), you have to be proficient in 30+ weapons systems. Ashley's profile notes that she's considered to be good at training other Marines to a high standard, hence why she's a senior NCO. I've learned every valuable skill I have off people like that.
I don't think that Liara is a mary-sue....all the time.

. While the term is rather nebulous she does fit the criteria posited by TVtropes, shes not there because our resident hero keeps editting her out.Xilizhra wrote...

Yes, according to his bitter enemies. In any case, there are far too many interpretations of the term to really just plop it down and expect that to be defining.Wait...he does that?

Eh, it's subjective depending on whether or not you think going from a quiet archaeologist to ruthless info broker in two years is acceptable, considering the asari rate of maturity. Don't get me wrong, life is change, but two years? Five to ten, and I'd believe it completely. Likewise, I wish she hadn't been palmed off as my Shepard's best friend along with Garrus in 3. I was kinda hoping to just chill with Joker, Ash and Javik later on. But every five seconds Liara's just in my personal space.

By the end of ME2, Ash is a senior NCO. Six months later, she's a mid-ranked comissioned officer who is a step below Shepard. Separate career tracks, though it's not unheard offor enlisted to receive comissions later. She'd still be a lieutenant though.

This is explained by Liara being, in a way, the opposite of many other asari. Whereas others tend to jet around the galaxy picking up various and sundry skills, Liara has a somewhat obsessive personality and has a strong tendency to have a laser-like focus on whatever it is she's currently pursuing. When she wants to accomplish something, she'll throw all of her formidable intellectual resources at it and not stop until it's finished, and I think that's how she picked up the information broker trade.Eh, it's subjective depending on whether or not you think going from a

The inconsistency of someone going from senior NCO to O-4 in just six months. Now, if she'd done OCS in between 1 and 2, was a 1st Lieutenant in 2, then maybe I could accept her being at most a Staff Lieutenant (infantry Captain in real life, can happen in extreme circumstances), but of course Jay and the art department had to bugger it up by giving her what I'd place as the worst character redesign in recent times.

As I said, it doesn't quite stick with me, but that's just my opinion. Some of the changes between 1 and 2 would just be a lot more logical if they took place at three or four more years, particularly with Wrex united the krogan.
