All forms of Magic in Thedas draw their power from Life itself. This would explain many things, few of which can be obviously explained otherwise:

(1) How only living beings are capable of any kind of Magic. Even Golems require living beings to be made.

(2) How Lyrium grants/enhances Magic but simultaneously draws the Life force out of its users. The two aspects (enhancement of Magic and draining of Life force) is actually of the same process.

(3) How Blood Magic generates its power. Blood is the substance of Life, and therefore Magic.

(4) How Blood Magic attracts Demons. Demons yearn for Life (as the source of Magic) in Thedas. The open exposure of the substance of Life (blood) grants them better opportunity to obtain Life in Thedas.

(5) How Demons who possess living beings (even those with no inherent Magical abilities of their own) become more powerful in Magic.

Perhaps these are all too obvious so this thread is not necessary after all.

If you see the magic that keeps everything alive as a "spark of life" then it sounds plausible.

Nice one OP. I also believed for some time that in every living being from Thedas there's an "obligatory" quantity of magic / energy that keeps them alive and that energy lies in their blood ( for the animals, humans, dwarves etc.) or some other place for the unorganic ones.Something like a soul. Good to see someone with a similar opinion. :)

Please read the first sentence of the OP again.

I said "in Thedas". If Spirits/Demons manifest in Thedas they are drawing upon the life force of some of its inhabitants, or have obtained life on their own.

Blood Magic (such as Blood Slave) works on many physically manifested Demons (Shades, Rage Demons, even Desire Demons) both in lore and in game. In fact this is how Blood Mages are able to control these Demons in the first place. Since Blood Slave does not work on beings without blood, that would mean that these Demons have blood, and therefore are alive - or more precisely have obtained life, in Thedas.

If gravity makes the conscious choice to crush your head instead of anything else.

Wouldn't that kind of gravity be interesting?
