Well, this was certainly unexpected. Microsoft decided that the best way to promote Internet Explorer was with ANIME!:o

So, without further ado, meet the personification of Internet Explorer:

They even made a video featuring our titular heroine:

Anime Festival Asia Special Video - feat. Inori Aizawa

Inori Aizawa was developed by Collateral Damage Studios in order to "reach out to anime and Japanese popular culture lovers across Asia," according to a Microsoft spokesperson. Because, naturally, nobody outside Asia would be remotely interested in Anime, right? Right, guys? Guys? Where are you going?! Here, have some concept art of other explorers:

Of course, Microsoft being Microsoft, they decided it was better to destroy any and all expectations right off the bat:

The anime character was created by Microsoft Singapore for the Anime Festival Asia (AFA) 2013. This is a local marketing program for anime and Japanese popular culture lovers at AFA 2013 and across Asia and does not represent an official mascot for Internet Explorer.

At least I think there's an IE Aizawa version coming soon (and hopefully for everyone). Some interesting links:

Meet Inori Aizawa: Here is Internet Explorer’s wacky anime mascot

The Story of Aizawa Inori

I think this particular image has since disappeared from the FB site:

Do not disappoint me, Microsoft!! Or you will feel my wrath...:bandit:

Easter Egg

If you check this site with an explorer other that IE you may be greeted by something like this:

:crying:

Microsoft may have accidentally stumbled upon a golden marketing strategy that they seem willing to ditch.

If the response is overwhelmingly positive they probably won't ditch it.

Internet explorer being a girl is gonna make a lot of people feel pretty bad for what they've done online.

She is the one, Explorer Moon. Chromecaptor Sagoogle?

It certainly wins points in the element of surprise. I'll give them that much. I saw the video... any anime nerd should see that at least once. :P They also added a wilhelm scream at 1:20.

They did use anime to market their stuff in Japan since quite some time.

I vaguely remember having seen advertisment for Windows Vista with anime girls representing the Windows functions on youtube, though for the love of all things digital I can't find it again ...

There's a, well, I suppose it's a customizable theme pack that you can download from the Collateral Damage Studios FB page under "Download freebies." It includes three wallpapers, icons, and a soundpack (with Tina Kim as Inori Aizawa) that includes english and japanese audio wavs. If someone gets around making an executable out of it, let me know. Meanwhile I'll try and create my own.

Download freebies

IE's personification a cute anime girl? Not at all. The real Aizawa should be more like:

Not completely unexpected.

Windows 7 has Nanami Madobe as Microsoft's official Windows 7 spokeswoman. Even Windows 8 has Ai and Yu Madobe.

Google Chrome FTW.

(Incidentally I just made a topic about how Google has ****ed up YouTube. At least their browser remains strong...for now)

Keep going M$. They're just pushing out so many technology failures lately from the Windows 8, Xbone, Windows Phone and the continuing numbered versions of IE.
