In the Service History the sacrificial lamb from Virmire is listed under Missing in Action. Which suggests that they are only presumed dead and might have actually survided.

BTW the BBCode on this forum is an infernal pain in the ass

well a nuke leaves little evidence you were there if you were at the center of the blast...

It also says on the screen beside it that they were killed. Now I'm not saying that Kaiden or Ash couldn't survive a fusion explosion which shook a ship in space hundreds of kilometres away, but I do sincerely doubt it.

Dead soldiers are always listed as MIA unless their body has been recovered, or there are at least two eye-witnesses confirming the death.

Yeah, the writing on the right of the screen says "Kaidan Alenko died on Virmire", so, whoever was left is toast.

Did they ever mention the yield of the bomb? Just trying to conjure up what it would take to actually survive...
They did have a squad of Salarian spy/commandos with them. They would have had to aquire some form of transport and or find sufficient cover.

I dunno to me MIA spells alive until confirmed KIA, in this case at least

There is actually, if I remember it right, an odd discrepancy regarding the yield of the bomb. The Salarians state that it should be about 20 kilotons (maybe 40), but then someone else states that it would be similar to the blast at Hiroshima. Little Boy's blast was at best 18 so I think 20 kt is the better estimate. Still, the fact that Kaiden/Ashley were either sitting with the bomb or a short distance away says to me they are likely dead either way.

Maybe there was a lead lined refrigerator nearby?

If the yield was only 20KT, getting even a mile away from the blast greatly increases their chances of survival.

I remain optimistic, although I never did like Kaidan...

NO WAY! She was right next to the bomb so she better is 6 feet under!
Hmm but if I think about it, it might be fun to kill her another time :o

If you left the one behind that was with the salarians, I'd stick to MIA, but if you left the one at the nuke... confirmed kill, for sure.

As to the labeling: In the trailer, Shepard was labeled KIA, while his body was never recovered by the Alliance, as far as we know.

are you sure the comparison to the Hiroshima bomb was with the Virmire nuke?
I thought it was the one on the espionage probe that Haliat took and used as bait for Shepard...

as much as I hated having to choose whom to rescue, I think it would diminish that decision in hindsight if the one left behind actually survived...
as contradictory as it may sound I hope that the one left on Virmire really is dead...

That could be because KIA is more dramatic and foreboding than MIA it could also be because there were witnesses to the destruction of the Normandy and Shepard still being on it.

However on-topic haven't the devs said in the past that whoever died on Virmire is dead and they aren't coming back?

This + logic = no.

Sorry, but when you leave on your ship, you see an explosion that is decently sized in proportion to the size of the planet. There is absolutely no way anyone would have survived that. If whoever you chose to let die couldn't make it back to the ship, then they most certainly couldnt escape a blast of that magnitude.

The closest survivor to ground zero at Hiroshima was only 100m away. In a basement, but still.

But the explosion in the cutscene afterwards was gargantuan, way bigger than 20-40 kt.

Yeah, sure, they survived what looked like a 100+ megaton nuclear explosion. Did they hide in a lead lined refrigerator?
