Not sure if this got commented on, with ME3 aging, numbers dropping, it must surely be coming onto the list.
EA's CEO also reveals dropping player numbers, (lack of) content updates, and waffly lessening game experience contribute to the decision to shut down servers.

I'd hazard console numbers dropping off quicker now:  GTA V, new CoD and BF, new consoles imminent... Would a largely PC centred player base be enough to sustain things?

CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged that "people invest time and energy into a game," and said making the call to close an online game is "something that we wrestle with a lot."

"There comes a point in time where either technology, or server architecture, or game experience or something starts to degrade to a level — or just the refreshing of content degrades to a level — where we don't any longer feel we're in a position to provide a great game experience,"

Shouldn't be a surprise really, ME3 has run it's course.

Until they specifically say "ME3", meh. Thanks for the heads-up, though.

Good... Maybe all the people on my friends list will start playing other things with me some more.

However... I don't think it's gonna happen in the next 6 months or so.

Well, the whole article was about FaceBook social gaming. Then again, this was retweeted in the official Mass Effect twitter feed: "Happy #N7Day13! The next @masseffect is on FB"
(Yes, I know the tweet was about FrosteBite, which makes it just as out of context as the OP's)

If we want to look at the reality of a "free add on multiplayer to a purchase bundle" (which is what ME3MP is for PC users), let's compare apples to apples and look at a similar throw away in the Orange Box by Valve, Team Fortress 2.

TF2 was a complete disaster as from day 1 it had no console play, so I ask you, what unholy magicing of numbers has Valve done to have it consistently be the #2 popular game on Steam? Today Steam says that TF2 had "54,621" simultaneous players at peak!?! How can this be without consoles?

The weird thing is, I find it easier to fill a lobby on ME3MP than to fill a game in TF2...

They will close the servers of their crappy EA Sports titles way way before they consider ME3 which is one of their biggest games. We are safe don't worry, at least until the next Mass Effect game is released.

Server space is limited, and it's easier to repurpose servers than get new ones.

lulz, I agree that they are crappy games. But Madden and fifa are huge. Way more fiscally valuable to EA than Mass Effect. Way more.

You've never worked with the variable resourced virtual machines of the AWS that EA is using for the ME3MP servers, have you?  They auto scale as needed, and EA only pays for the actual compute power used.  If no one is using them, nothing is allocated, and EA pays nothing.

The only acceptable explanation is setting up for MEX MP.

We're good until after the next Mass Effect comes out, I assure you.

ME as a franchise has demonstrated that it has one of the most vocal fanbases in the industry, and the last thing EA wants to do is ****** it off again. As judging by the still on-going activity here and in-game, there's no reason to drop the servers before the next entry to the series comes along. Why cripple a way to let fans get psyched for the next thing they're going to buy?

If ME3 MP were a ghost town, it'd be a different story. But it's not. If Dead Space 2's multiplayer is still running, I assure you ME3 will still be running.

I'd love to say ME3 is safe in the nearest future, but it's EA.. Just recently they not only scrapped the new C&C title, but shut down the developer too, so anything can happen.

Don't even think that ME3 servers require much bandwidth, probably more likely to shut BSN down lol.

Isn't PC population in MP something like 20%? Definitely not the majority, as far as I remember.

Let's not jump the gun just yet. I have not seen the lightning, I have not heard the thunder nor felt the strong winds of this approching storm. Considering that the servers are still up I am willing to believe the sky will not darken soon. However 2014 will bring Mass Effect(Whatever the hell they decide to call it.) this could be the hurricane warning many are dreading.

This is a generalized document that doesn't specifically state ME3.

1/10 would not bang even in the dark.

I don't know about that, with no backward compatibility (outside of Galakai on PS4) there's an issue with new consoles tearing away at the playerbase that may make EA a little more inclined to shut them down before the next Mass Effect title. I think we have another half a year at least though, given that a lot of console gamers won't be going 8th gen right away but we certainly won't have it until the next ME game, which we likely won't see until 2015 at the earliest, and way before then enough gamers will have migrated to PS4/One/WiiU to justify cutting off the servers, ME isn't a living breathing powerhouse of a MP like most traditional MP (PvP), the servers won't be up for the half a dozen years COD4's have been, the game is PvE and, as such, without a constant stream of refreshing new content has an expiry date, as awesome as ME has been I doubt it will be around come next N7 Day.

Red Dead Redemption servers are still up, and they don't even have microtransactions. I rarely have trouble finding a full team when I play even at weird times.
Just enjoy it folks! :wizard:

This. I'm really sure that they want to shift the remaining ME3MP players to the next game, when it comes out.
