How is this thread alive?

Lots of strawmen, moving goalposts, and overzealous spite for certain characters.

I always wondered how Luke was qualified to fly an X-wing... heck, the crop duster giy from Independence Day had more credibility.

he was a pilot before iirc, but his uncle had grounded his "ship"

You recall incorrectly.

Luke was an amatuer bush pilot of the T-16 Skyhopper, but a very good one, with his abilities naturally (but unknowingly) augmented by the Force.

The T-16 is made by the Incom Corporation, the same company that makes the T-65 X-Wing. The T-16 actually has very similar and modular controls to the T-65, making it a very popular live trainer for prospectice pilots for the Rebellion.

Luke also tested in the simulator on Yavin 4 200 times against the entire Imperial Fleet and was only killed once, with the difficulty at its highest setting.

Plus, he was flying in place of Derek 'Hobbie' Klivian who had been struck down by a native virus on Yavin 4 and was recuperating in the infirmary, leaving his X-wing slot open Red Squadron. Not to mention, due to previous engagements, the Rebellion was in critical need for skilled pilots.

Plus Luke was never expected to actually be the one to destroy the Death Star. He was assigned to screen fire and fighters from Gold Squadron with the rest of Red Squadron.

Total Star Wars fanboy freakout over.

You know, even Modern Warfare 2 might not qualify, because as I recall, you play as a Private who is nonetheless able to take on fully armored and equipped FSB teams wearing a suit.

You know, you don't know much about modern physics compared to video game gameplay physics.

I'm not sure what a firefight between an armored FSB team and a Private in a suit has to do with physics.

Oh, come on. That's not fair. Some people don't have the benefit of a decent education. The next best thing is to learn about the world and physics through video games.

Tell me, Massively, does mocking the uneducated make you feel powerful?

'Real' bullets, do physics, hurt. A lot.

Something gameplay physics ignore. A lot.

If what we're talking about is characters doing things they have seemingly no qualifications for, then my question is: How did Lando Calrissian end up being a general in Return of the Jedi?

Ever read The Adventures of Lando Calrissian?

Granted, this is somewhat lampshaded for Lando: He became the Baron Adminstrator of a mining colony on Bespin home to several million people by winning a Sabacc tournament. And he admitted that he had no idea of what the hell he was doing.

So, either A. whatever game that is exists in an alternate universe where people can be shot full of bullets without being noticeably hampered in their operations (except in cutscenes), or B. it's a gameplay abstraction and, in-universe, bullets are still just as dangerous, so the PC is genuinely amazing at avoiding them.

I'm going for B.

And he's not amazingly fast at dodging them. He just doesn't get hit. Namely by remember the difference between cover and concealment, like a real Soldier, especially a Ranger with the 75th would.

Which is still being good at avoiding them. And David's point ultimately stands.

'Luck' doesn't exist when you're fighting Russian Spetznaz or VDV. They're far too well trained for that. No, you avoid bullets the old fashioned way: by putting something big and strong between you and the shooter. Preferably something that also conceals you.

Cover is one thing.

Concealment is another.

Cover and Concealment is gold.

She was written to be Shepards friend not his professor. I don't think she's acting out of line here, you get that vibe from Garrus too.

She doesn't act like his friend. She acts like his only friend. Whenever Liara is around, I feel like I got sucked into some vacuum of the universe where the only other person who exists is Liara.

That scene at the end (her "gift") is very symbolic of it.

This is kind of beside the point though.

Yeah it's really odd. I kept wondering why I didn't have equivelant bro scenes with Garrus. :( All you get is that shootout on the Citadel.

The gift isn't that bad if you play a paragon that was friends/lovers with her. The second you play anyone else though it gets awkward.

At least she doesn't offer it if you never talk to her unpromoted in ME3.

Soldier Shepard can't train Liara to form a singularity or put someone into stasis (in actuality, it would be quite interesting if Liara actually teaches Adept Shepard Singularity). These are advanded biotic skills (Kaidan has only basic biotic skills for example) which usually require years to master...and only the most powerful biotics can accomplish them.

Liara is a trained biotic when we meet her on Therum. But she doesn't have any special weapon/armor trainig...and her skillset in ME1 reflects this. She has Throw, Warp, Lift, Singularity, Barrier, Stasis, Electronics and First Aid.

I don't think Singularity is that advanced, Jack's students use it alot during the Grissom Academy mission and they're teenagers.

I believe it's advanced enough that only "pure" biotics can use it. Sentinels like Kaidan and Miranda are incapable of it.
