Hey guys, I've played mass effect since the first day it came out and i've been a fan ever since. recently I changed xbox's and didn't transfer over my saved files. I'd always played ME as male Shep and i was wondering about changing my gender for my new playthrough. would you guys say its better playing Fem Shep rather than Male Shep and does it change how you play the game?

Really the only person that can answer that is you.

I have multiple playthroughs with both genders but I wouldn't say either is "better", it'd be more accurate to say they're just different.

So yeah, I'd suggest a FemShep playthrough.

I've played both genders in multiple playthroughs. Personally, FemSheps always feels like a better experience. No offense to Mark Meer, but Hale is a much better voice actor. Actually, hearing voice inflections makes a huge difference.

I am also partial to strong women protagonists though in stories.

yeh i've just started playing through ME1 as Fem Shep, is quite surprising how differently she's treated as apposed to Male Shep. like in chora's den, people asking me if i'm dancing tonight, and the way Officer Harkin speaks to you. made me want to punch him

That's pretty much the biggest difference as I recall.  It gets pretty samey between the two genders after Chora's den.

I used to play only male characters, being male myself, but I've started choosing female characters by default in RPGs.  Mostly because I have to play male protagonists just about exclusively in other genres, the change of pace is nice.

I've found changing background (Sole Survivor vs War Hero) has a slightly greater effect than just Gender.

Male Spacer Sole Survivor And Female Spacer War Hero don't have the same effects in-game.

Yeah, I loved that about playing Femshep. It really took me by surprise. Besides that scene in Chora's Den tho, I don't think Shep gets treated much differently.

Personal opinion:

ME1 - FemShep better
ME2 - About equal
ME3 - MaleShep slightly better

Overall - FemShep slightly better

FemShep expresses more overall. MaleShep is much more annoyingly flat (especially in ME1), until ME3 where I, at least, can see that there's a character starting to grow out at that point. FemShep is still good in ME3, but I get the sense, for the first time in Mass Effect with Shepard, of *over*acting.

The only thing I can see it changing mechanically, is the romances.

MaleShep: Ashley (ME1, ME3), Kaidan (ME3), Liara (ME1, ME2 DLC, ME3), Miranda (ME2, ME3 continues), Jack (ME2, ME3 continues), Tali (ME2, ME3 continues), Steve (ME3)

FemShep: Kaidan (ME1, ME3), Liara (ME1, ME2 DLC, ME3), Jacob (ME2, ME3... sorta), Thane (ME2, ME3 continues), Garrus (ME2, ME3 continues), Samantha (ME3)

Roleplaying wise, outside of romance arcs, there are probably some specific gender lines, flirtations, etc. When it comes to the 'feel' of playing each Shep, there may be some differences. For example, I'm much more comfortable with a MaleShep Soldier and a FemShep Adept (but then again, I also want to make a brutal FemShep Engineer hehe), with differently toned stories.

Hale is an outright better voice actor.

But Meer, by the end, 'owns' the role of 'Shepard' more imo. (And I'll assume that autodialogue helped in this)

It takes time for him though, and Hale is a better bet for a series playthrough.

I think my issue with her in ME3, is that she somehow to my ears becomes a more sidecharacter to the canon, 'FemShep', instead of 'a female Shepard', and I didn't feel that way in ME1-ME2.

That said, FemShep is still fun to play as, and I can understand people having that as their default style of RP.

I Played both male and fem but for me there is only one Shepard and hes Mark Meer.
This guy doesnt play Shepard - he is the Shepard reborn !
Hale is good at trying , but it isnt the same.

I actually never played ME as femshep. I always felt that Shepard being a woman is somewhat off. No offense to women, but as I explained quite a while back in a, now defunct, other thread, the amount of times Shepard gets thrown around, takes a punch or is otherwise physically taking a hammering makes it rather unconvincing for Shepard to be a female with a little bit of an underwhelming looking body when it comes to muscles and strength. I'm not saying that Shepard could never be female, but just not for me.

I also agree with Angmir and disagree with Navasha, Mark Meer is a much better voice actor than Hale is. I've watched quite a couple of clips of Femshep and every word that's supposed to be either angry, or otherwise slightly physically threatening is quite unconvincing and would make me want to laugh if I were facing her in battle to be honest.

Personally I like the experience more with femShep myself. There's some subtle details that I appreciate in the trilogy as a result of Shepard being female, as already mentioned in the thread. I'm also kind of partial to female protagonists, and I suppose it helps that I also prefer Hale over Meer. Meer's a great vorcha, but I don't buy Shepard from him.

I couldn't disagree more.

While Hale is one of the best voice actors in the biz, I thought Meer delivered a more solid performance as Shepard. His delivery was so spot on that he often reminded of me of mustangs (officers that were prior-enlisted) and Staff NCOs I knew while I was in the Marines. Hale in contrast I thought occasionally over-emoted when a more subtle delivery would have been better.

I made a thread and it got a dev response on the subject. I'm too lazy to dredge it up.

for me its

ME1: equal
ME2: Femshep better
ME3: Maleshep better

ME1
Maleshep: flat to the point of annoyance like you said
Femshep: honestly wasnt anything to write home about, but standing next to  ME1 maleshep I can see why people thought it was amazing

ME2
Maleshep: substantial improvement overshadowed by ME2 Femshep
Femshep: no bones about it, absolute best shep of the triology

ME3
Maleshep: third try's the charm, meer really hit his groove in this one
Femshep:like Swoby said, sense of overacting.. hales performance in HALO4 broke my heart because I was like, "dude!...thats what ME3 Femshep should of sounded like!"
