There is of course always the Claymore.  Real old school would be Carnifex, but it was left behind by the Super Paladin and Uber Arc Pistol.

A light-weight AR, Disciple, Phalanx, Viper, Raptor, Hurricane, BPP, or Hornet. Maybe even the Tempest or Locust. Something light-weight that can deal a good amount of damage. Though, if you're playing it right, you won't need to shoot.

For the most part something light. Although I kinda defy those conventions on my Fury and use the claymore. It's really fun to do.

The Carnifax was mentioned once, but seems to be forgotten by most everyone...It's a great caster gun, as long as you can land headshots. Perhaps the most underestimated gun now IMHO.

Agreed, surprised no one mentioned this.  It's very good for a number of caster classes.

I use it  a bit too often on weapons platforms.

I use the Carnifex on my Adepts but that's mostly because my Carnifex is maxed and the weapons others are suggesting are at really low levels. But really on most adepts any weapon you are comfortable with that gives you a high cool down bonus is good, I've seen people using the Tempest and Locust on Gold and do really good because they use their powers really well.

I've lately re-fallen in love with the Paladin & Carnifex for power classes.

Edit: But you'd probably also want a Hurricane or CSMG with a piercing mod for when Brutes or Dragoons rush you.
