Male.

I can't really connect with Female PCs.

This.

Although after a few playthroughs with a male I do tend to try out a female protagonist.

Strange, because something is making you unable to relate to people of different gender/orientation from yours. Is it such a big thing, that you can't look past it? That you can’t even imagine a main character not being like you?

Scary, because it makes me suspect that you do not perceive these people in the same light as you do the people of your own gender/orientation. The ability to relate/imagine yourself being the other person is the base of all human relationship, it makes me think you are unable to maintain normal  relationships with these groups of people.

And I do think it is a choice, because if it is not, it's even more scary then I  first thought. (Not like it matters anyways, the things random people like me say on the internets, anyways)

I can relate to other people just fine, I just can't imitate their preferences. I can't try to play as a female just as I cannot start a gay romance. As I said it's who I am is what's affecting it, not what I choose to be.

You're reading too much into it, and it's leading you to make some pretty wild assumptions.

Why can't you ? I mean imagine a character , and now just flip their gender/ sexual preferences, all other traits stay the same. What's stopping you from playing them ? I honestly don't understand.

When playing games where you can choose gender I tend to play female characters more than male characters. I think its because I can rarely play females in other games.

I play as a male, but I fully support the inclusion of female protagonists... Whenever I try a different gender, I can't help but feel like I'm just playing the game as a guy who happens to be a woman, if that makes any sense. Oddly enough, this does not happen in games that only offer female leads...

I tried that, never worked. Just like some others, I can't connect to those characters. It's not something I can explain either.

And it would be a perfectly normal woman, btw.  There is nothing character-wise, exclusive to woman/men/straight/bi/gays... etc

I guess it's hard to fight the cultural assumtions when you are adult, they seem self evident and true...

But in this case it's horrible and must be pointed out.

i play more as female many times because it's really so me. i dislike playing as male character but i don't want to be playing more of "boy" games which i'm stuck with. but fortunately for me, i have plenty of games that allows me to play as girl/woman. and i'm quite happy with it.

i play a female because i want something pretty to look at while im playing

wouldnt say it is more "fun"

i also like that a female has the ability to wear heavy armor. never liked the idea of women going in to battle with a chainmail bikini. total immersion breaker.

Stop trying to preach your skewed vision of the world. He isn't mysoginistic or homophobic, he simply enjoys playing protagnists similar to him and finds it uncomfortable to play different lifestyles. He is no judging others nor is he assumig himself to be better than others. He has his own comfort zon and would rather remain in it while playing games. I personally can play females, homosexuals on the other hand is a bit uncomfortable. I find romances to be personal, and protagonists to be an avatar of my personality. Therefore I chose to limit them to my sexual preference. Its not a matter of us being unable to relate its a matter of us choosing not occupy a persona that is different then ours.  You can play as a gay charater, I on the other hand see no reason to. I have n interest in playing a gay romance and would rather like it if I was emoionally invested in a game( Through a similar protagonist, and a romance I enjoy{like Morrigan in DAO})

In games like Dragon Age, particularly ones with romance options, I prefer to play my first playthrough as a male character. It's got nothing to do with being unable to connect to the character- I can feel just as much sympathy and empathy for a female character as a male one, but as I like to put myself in the characters position it feels much more natural having the world react to me as a male, my real life gender, than as a female.

In subsequent playthroughs I will play female characters, but in these playthroughts I meta-game a bit and never really immerse myself as much into the character as I do in my first playthrough.

I am not calling him either, in fact  I would probably call you one, not him B).  I am not saying he is worse then me, I am just saying I find it strange and scary.

As female, I tend to almost always play female. As an avid mmo player for 14 years I've always had the choice of gender in my favorite games. That said, I have a hard time playing male characters. I've made many attempts over the years, the most successful in SWtOR and GW2.

Side note: Gaider in a recent tumblr post was talking about demographics and said this:

So we have good numbers regarding how many players made female PC’s in Mass Effect and Dragon Age. What we don’t know, of course, is whether the players who made those characters are themselves female. Lots of male players make female PC’s (I do it myself, when given the option)… but I imagine the reverse might also be true, so using those numbers to give a reliable estimate of our female player base is dicey at best.

I just wanted to point out that in my er..."career" in mmos, I hardly come across women that play male characters. Those who do are extremely rare especially at max level (I've known maybe...2-5 with max levels out of hundreds of people I've more closely interacted with). On the other hand I'd say upwards of 75-90% of men are likely to play female characters (main or alts). Bioware games tend to have different content (although normally just romance oriented) for the genders which would separate the demographics a bit. People might want to see the outcomes of a romanced Morrigan or Alistair in later games for example even if they have a gender bias.

Maybe so.  I'm not going to try to claim that I'm perfect, and culture tends to convince us (some of us) early on that men and women have some degree of psychological differences...

Can't really connect to the female characters, so male. Still, I don't have a problem in playing games where there is a single character and that character is female ( Blood Rain for exemple ), but in RPG's where I can create my character - always male.

Hmm, I wonder if there is a difference in RP MMO communities, as opposed to the general MMO community. I am a former raider,  and people mostly referred to their characters as "toons", and didn't  regard them as proper characters, more like pawns.

Nope, just something that evolved out of other names I've used or liked. I used to go by Ferine, and I liked how the name Farrah sounded but simpler names like Fera are generally taken. (off topic, sorry!)
