It's rather sad, I guess. :(

I hope you're not piting me, as that would be insulting.

Nah, it's more of a general sadness over the state of the world

Hmm, I wonder if there is a difference in RP MMO communities, as opposed to the general MMO community. I am a former raider,  and people mostly referred to their characters as "toons", and didn't  regard them as proper characters, more like pawns.

Most of the people I knew and myself would fall into the general MMO population. I was a more serious raider so most of the people I interacted with were too. I spent some time on RP servers (even though I didn't rp myself). Even on thos servers the amounts of females that played males seriously were very low. Although, one of the women I was most familiar with that played a max level male character as her main was on a RP server.

To each his own I guess, but I'm simply ucomfortable with you saying its scary that people like to play as protaginsts similar to themselves.  In a way it feels discrimnatory. Like your unable to accept that people (who are accepting of others- Im not talking about homopohobes) hold their sexuality as something sacred. Like I said my protagonist ingames becomes almost like an avatar of myself. I am not sexually atracted to men, so hes not sexually attracted to men. Mind you, if I play a female character I swing both ways.( Simply because playing as a female isn't as personal as playing as amale) In that case I'm playing a pawn, but when I'm playing a guy Im basically plying myself, and like it or not I'm a straight male.

 Male gamer here.

I'm okay with playing either gender. I have no preference pre-game, but depending on the story being told and the role-playing options at my disposal, I may come to like one character more than the other, due in no small to choice of gender.

In DA:2, I most adored my female Hawke, Ilda, and her being a girl did make for more interesting role-playing.

But in DA:O, my Dalish Warden (male, pictured left) > all.

that's true Faerah. i have known few friends who plays as male.

Question:
is Faerah random name from KOA? like Faelands?

Nope, just something that evolved out of other names I've used or liked. I used to go by Ferine, and I liked how the name Farrah sounded but simpler names like Fera are generally taken. (off topic, sorry!)

okay thanks!  Posted ImagePosted Image

I can actually write a lot on this topic (context/power realations in society in context etc.), but it will probably eventually lead to the topic being closed...  Sorry about that, I know cause it happened before

(Me, straight, female, 28)

Depends on the story and the voice actor. If the protagonist is not voiced I prefer playing a male character (straight and gay). I rather watch a male butt... If I like the VA I play female.
ES: Oblivion: male
Skyrim: male
DA:O male
DA2: female first but the voice didn´t suit the character I had in mind, thats why I did two male playtroughts after that. (Damn you, Anders!)
Mass Effect: ONLY female. I loved femShep.
SWTOR: male sith (because of his german voice! Started female Jedi but was bored by her personality very soon)

DA:I probably male first, if the female Voice Actor is badass I will try female. Maybe even first.
(If any promising LI´s are around I play female first. (Damn you, Anders!))

I can relate to other people just fine, I just can't imitate their preferences. I can't try to play as a female just as I cannot start a gay romance. As I said it's who I am is what's affecting it, not what I choose to be.

You're reading too much into it, and it's leading you to make some pretty wild assumptions.

Why can't you ? I mean imagine a character , and now just flip their gender/ sexual preferences, all other traits stay the same. What's stopping you from playing them ? I honestly don't understand.

I personally can't play dudes and start a straight relationship or play a straight woman. So i understand what he's saying.
Probably because as a gay woman, i relate more and feel more comfortable with gay relationships. It's just how you feel....

I was referring to males playing female characters, and I mean really role playing, not just goofing around.
My main was a female tank with the side of support if respeced, my second character was pure heals - a rather oldish gent, - both humans.

Male, because that's my gender and I don't get anything from roleplaying a woman. That's just weird.

It’s a little bit less scary, because it’s probably your only chance to play as such ( a rather sad state of modern story focused gaming, I am afraid). I would have been equally scary  of you if there were over 9000 games with a female gay protagonist and you couldn’t relate to a single one with a straight male choice.

But again, me being scared is subjective, I can’t  take over his house or steal his bike with it, right ?

for me Rpgs are really tiresome( i would like to say taxing but don't know if it's right) unless you are invested in the character/world, and i can't get invested in female pc or dwarfs male/female and probably Qunari.

Generally I play women. But I do like playing men though. Gives me a different view on things. And I do normally play as straight characters. The one exception was my Male Hawke playthrough which he romances Anders, it just kind of fit together. But is one more "fun" than the other? Not in particular. I get equal enjoyment out of both. c:

I'm female. Sometimes the mood takes me to generate male characters (e.g. my Nerevarine in Morrowind), but I usually prefer to play female if I'm given the choice. In cases where I don't get the choice (e.g., The Witcher, Alpha Protocol, Planescape: Torment), I'm quite happy to play the preset protagonist as long as the game is fun and interesting.

I've actually been thinking a fair bit about a related issue: in the overall composition of a character, how important is being male or female? I would always have thought it to be very high, until I played a NWN module called Sanctum of the Archmage, written by my friend Andarian. One of the romanceable NPCs comes in male and female "versions" - you can choose from two different versions of the module, depending on which one you want. And it really, really works well. The most important things about this NPC, which make the character so compelling, are the same, regardless of sex. There are a few differences, not unlike the kinds of differences faced by male and female Wardens, but those are just adaptations of the one "character" to two situations. Frankly, the implementation of this was a revelation to me, and it made me try something similar in a module I'm working on at the moment. But I don't know how the wider community would react if Bioware ever tried something like this in their own writing. There are already clashes at times based on making romanceable companions "playersexual," i.e. attracted to protagonists of both genders (or, from another point of view, making them all bisexual - or, from yet another perspective, adaptive, so that they are gay or straight depending on your protagonist). How would people feel about Fenris or Anders if, in someone else's game, they were female characters?

Sounds interesting to me... And yeah, I have been playing with changing gender of my characters, leaving all other things in place too.  Have been working great so far.

There was this guy once who got into the habit of pretending to be a girl from his class online on forums, albeit with a name change. He posted pictures of his Mass Effect character and he'd made it look just like her.

I usually enjoy playing a female more, because I have an easier time developing a personality in my own gender. I do enjoy playing males or romancing either gender because it's a fantasy game. It's like wearing a vampire costume to a party. I can have fun going for the whole children of the night thing for the evening and go home and be plain old me again.

Everyone has different comfort zones. If someone wants to play only elves or only straight characters or only women that's up to them and there's nothing to say about the player from the choices he or she makes. I assume people play these games because they're fun. Everyone has fun differently and as long as it's confined to a game, nothing's really weird.

As far as the first half of the post for female respondents, I think BW does a great job representing females in choices regarding abilities, armor, interaction with companions and NPCs and romance. I remember when I first played D&D female characters were capped at a certain strength (18/50?) whereas their male counterparts were not. That irritated me at the time because it was like saying "We've got elves throwing fireballs but a woman can never be as strong as a man." Bioware has done a great job being sensitive to people who want to play female PCs.

On a related note - in the few instances where male and female PCs received different reactions I found it amusing rather than offensive. It made my character seem more real to me.

I'm female , and the first pc I create for rpg is always female.
I don't create a pc who is me , but I'm a bad roleplayer I guess...because all my pc have my own moral code. They all end up making the same general choices.
Anyway I find it easier to connect to the whole story as a female.

When I want a pc more pragmatic and less merciful (but still nice ...I can't help it) I create a male pc.So playing another gender helps me roleplay out of my confort zone , I guess.

So female pc when I want a deep level of immersion.
And male pc , when I want to roleplay a bit more outside the box.

I'm gratified that I'm not the only one who would find this idea worth investigating.  This sort of thing is probably not going to happen in fully-voiced games, though I might be wrong.

I'm female and I can only play female characters. Sorry men. I actually have tried playing and connecting with male protagonists many times without success. Not saying I can't connect with protagonists not exactly like me, because I can and have played many protagonists of real ethnicities and fantasy races different from mine (most characters look and act nothing like me), but for some reason that just doesn't fully extend to gender. I need to be able to play a female character.

I like playing with women (:bandit:) because I like the idea of a female hero. You still don't see that enough in books, movies, games etc. Although I usually play as both at least once.
