In ME I almost always play MaleShep. In DA I've played both genders and can't say wich one is better, both are great in their own ways. However in Saints Row for example, playing a girl is much more fun and fits the narrative far better imo.

I've found that as a guy, I enjoy playing female characters because it allows me to separate myself more from the character, preventing me from falling into the trap of 'what would I do' vs 'what would the character do.' As you can tell, I don't typically like self-insert RP. Plus, the different perspective can be more interesting.

At the end of the day though, it depends on the game. I usually end up doing both at least once.

It is rather strange, I  generally sort of scared of people who say this, but your choice, I guess.

That's weird, how's it strange or scary?

And it's not a choice, it's the way I am.

It seems kind of repressed.

It depends on the game. Some games give you no choice but to play a male PC. Such as: The Witcher, Alpha Protocol, Deus Ex, etc.

In the games that provide a choice, I based my choice in genders on the character I want to play. My first play through of Mass Effect was as a male soldier. In Dragon Age, I played a female mage. In SWTOR, the storyline was vital to my choice in gender. My agent operative is a female. A femme fatale, if you will. My bounty hunter merc is a female. She's tiny, pretty but talks smack and does good deeds. Whereas my Inquisitor and Mara are males. Simply because when I think of the dark side and Sith Lords, its guys I pretty much picture.

That's how I play. Quite simply, because I enjoy it.

I do both. However, being a male myself, I find it easier to get into the head of a male, and thus my "default" is a male.

I play as both. If the game offers it why not? Increases the replay value and makes for different experiences within the game.

When I have the choice, I play as both. I do tend to play as female first though, for whatever reason.

I am a woman and I love playing as a strong female protag. Ugh, it just feels so much better. Scenes like when Saren grabs Femshep by her neck, or in Saints Row 2 being a bat**** insane gangleader with devious kill schemes, or going to the Landsmeet as female Cousland after Howe said you were "still playing at being a man" or w/e, UGH. I thought Howe was going to spit on her. I'm rambling. The point is, I think playing female characters is so much better. Especially since I can make my girls black. After years of playing white males and pretty japanese dudes, I really appreciate the ability to create a female hero that is what I imagine when I think "strong woman". ^^

On the armor topic, I'm probably going to get reamed for this, but I like when my characters have the option to show skin, and I don't mean during sex scenes. I don't care about realism. Sexy mage robes, ftw!

Ha!  Well, having options is nice.  Gods know, if the Devs don't provide sufficiently sexy armor, the modders will!  I prefer realistic armor--and I reject "it's a fantasy!!!!" as a valid argument for women wearing armor that's about as protective as if they were wading nude into battle.  But I wouldn't be upset if we had a choice of both types, and the realistic versions weren't fugly or crap, stat-wise, in comparison.

Not that robes have ever been appropriate as armor, but hey, that's why mages carry rogues and warriors with them, right?

Bikini armour is a fair tradeoff for supermassive pauldrons.

Women aren't allowed massive pauldrons though because they already did that in the 80's.

I'm male, but I find it much easier to identify with females than males.

I prefer playing as a credible looking fighter, so male is just a natural pick.

Can women have finely groomed facial hair? Didn't think so.

The sensible thing would probably be to pick based on the voice acting. That's the most substantive difference, generally.

Though I seem to end up disliking my male characters and thus end up playing female ones.

I'm female myself and given any choice I will play a female character.

This is mostly because as a kid growing up playing videogames, with the rare exception the hero was always male and that really irritated me. So now I have a choice its great. As for the orientation of my characters, they're usually heterosexual but sometimes I'll play a bisexual one.

That being said, in games like DAO after I've completed four or five female Wardens and there is sufficient male-only content for it to be worth the trouble I will create a male Warden or two. (AKA, the different LI's, the outcome of the dark ritual, stuff like that.)

But in games like Oblivion or Skyrim where there is little to no difference in content between male and female characters I won't bother and will just stick to females.

I usually go an elven male warrior because the elves, like me, are short, beautiful and hyperintelligent.

To be fair your average male could easily slap around your average woman. The screeching just isn't worth it though.

Amazons are few and far between compared to male soldiers.

Amazons are the first thing I think of when considering female soldiers. What are you talking about?
