Just imagine how much more detailed, rich, and interesting the storyline could be, if devs wouldn't spend considerable amount of development time for the pointless open world with side quests... More rich dialogue scenes. More actors' work. More rich cutscenes. Much smaller, but also much more detailed and realistic locations.

Each hour of development spent on open world design cuts a little piece from storytelling quality. And I really wonder how much will be cut from DA:I in the end...

A smaller game with a tighter story was the goal of DA2. It was not received all that great.

I think DA:I may be a bit of an over-correction (three countries so far and counting) but they have a new engine and they really want to stretch their legs. That's the call they made, so I'm thinking they are doing it and just seeing where the chips fall.

DA2 goal wasn't fulfilled, because BioWare had twice less time for the game development. Time, that could be spend to forge the storytelling. Time, they waste right now on developing the excess open world and side quests.

And what makes you think they aren't focusing and forging the storytelling just because they're making the world bigger?

They have limited time and people resources. Besides, BioWare studios are quite small. If studio developing DA:I will concentrate on open world and side quests they will have much less time for main story and key locations. Less time - less quality. And other BioWare studios have their own job to do. They will not be able to help much.

they already said MANY times this isn't an open world game like skyrim. You have more and larger areas to explore but with the continuity of their story unlike skyrim. You are on a path to make the inquisition powerful and solve the main issue in the story, everything is for that purpose unlike skyrim where nothing is related.

Hadn't seen this before. Looks pretty good for a game still quite a ways off.

Sevial your taking the term "open world" too seriously, the game isn't gonna as open as other games like TES and Fallout

Hope no longer because the devs already said this multiple times.

Looks a bit too easy/action-ey likely because it's a demo and they probably can't die. But I'm looking forward too it nonetheless.
A large more open world is a huge bonus to me, I love exploring. :wizard:

I appreciate your point, however I would respond  by saying that. quite frankly, we know nothing about the game's environment besides what we've seen in a 30-minute pre-beta demo. In truth we don't yet know how rich and detailed the story is likely to be, with or without the open world. Your analysis presupposes that the developers are actively sacrificing plot development, characterisation and depth at the expense of creating a large world, but who is to say that the two have to be mutually exclusive?

It may be that the finished game will be as rich, detailed and interesting as we could wish for - but will also include open world exploration. I am prepared to wait and see.

True that it is slightly different from the Pax video.
I blame multiple online video sites for calling it " leaked footage" implying it had been leaked from Bioware without their approval and it was new/previously unseen by the public . Both untrue.
shrugs.
My guess is a few/very few DA fans won't like the combat. I suspect there are other fans that won't like the consequences aspects, feeling they're too restrictive .

It was interesting to see an prolonged version. I noticed some interesting things. Were those red templars.... casting actual magic spells against the keep?

What he said, Its not an open world. Its a large world. The areas are big, which I believe is probably a well accepted facet of modrn fantasy rpgs. Think of it this way if bioware can succeed in making a game this large with an amazing story, then they've made art. If not they've made an okay rpg that I doubt people will have a problem playing. I'm not too worried, Bioware has had pretty good stories and they've had some experience with open areas in swtor. i'll assume they've learned from their failures.

I only have one thing that ticks me off. Based on this video and the pax one, it feels like the environments lack the wildlife(something I believe is essential to a rich and immersive world)

The "no talking while out of the den" style clearly says that this game will be even more button awesome than in DA2. Flashy combat, hulk cassandra and ME3 style 2 option discussion means that rpg is out of the window and hack'n slash pew pew is in.

They are marketing it as an action-rpg this time, though. But yes, the combat looks extremely lame.

DA2 was already marketed as an action-rpg, if I recall (there were threads complaining about this label during development).
I'd say that the normal combat animations are better than DA2's. I don't like the Inquisitor's earth attack and Cassandra's shield bashing, but I had problems with ridicolous skills and animations since DAO (less than DA2, but still had).

wow, never saw this before and so far I love it! Now all they have to do is give us a well written story to go with it and they got me!

I'm not a fan of Dragon Age really, I have the first one. The game looks better and interesting, if it plays like Skyrim I will enjoy it. It looks good though.

This.

It's not an open world à la Skyrim, as we've said many times. There are areas, however, which are much larger and which have lots of places to explore and engage with-- and they exist in conjunction with (and sometimes as part of) the kind of story-heavy content you expect from us.

And, no, there's not a lot of "life" to those big areas just yet-- a lot of that is yet to come, as those details are part of the polish we put into such areas prior to release. The demo shows what we can of our pre-alpha build at this point, and there will be plenty of details to come (including, I imagine, more on the actual story content) in the next year.

Feedback is useful, so by all means comment away-- and thank you to those who said this looks promising. For those who don't, I'd suggest reserving judgment until you see more, but it's your dollar.

What are the chances of getting rid of the two-hander "make giant rocks appear for no reason" animation to go away in the next year? Does it serve a purpose? It just looks so comic book cartoon. Blech.

Other than that I think it does indeed look promising and I am ecstatic that BioWare brought back the tactical camera.

It was a firebomb named Antivan fire. What they were saying is that a mage can use their fire ball spell to achieve the same effect as what the warrior or rogue can do with that item.

Yup, you use items to set the boats on fire. Since this is a pre-alpha build, I assume that's why the number didn't go down for the items.

honestly i think its a good ... i guess halfway point. between open world and loading screens."closed world" the areas are large enough to explore and "almost" get lost in.

Now the only thing I want... is a lighting version going to be advalabe for the sword, and will it look just as good?

That's what I like to hear. Posted Image story is very, very important to me. I couldn't even finish Skyrim because it was a whole lot of world with nothing going on that I cared about.
