Overall the Volus have gained acceptance as being good kits to use except for the Merc.  However he is my favourite one to play not because he's uber powerful, but I find him a lot of fun.  I'm sure someone out there throws a Typhoon on him and sprays Daka Daka death all over and top scores all the time and will tell you that's how he should be played because the Merc Pets are useless after the Decoy/Drone nerf.  That is not how I play him, sneaky and busy would probably be the best way to describe how I do it.
I have the Geth scanner as standard on all my Volus mainly to make up for not having a good distance view due to being a short arse.  The build is HERE you could use whatever weapons you happen to like but the Hurricane/Scorpion works for me and allows rapid spamming of powers.
I spend a lot of time cloaking running up to the enemy and dropping the Decoy next to them especially groups or slow moving bosses, running away then launching the Drone at them while spraying them with Incendiary SMG fire.  This causes a lot of distraction and disruption in the ranks leaving myself and my team mates time to kill them while they are busy attacking my pets.  The Drone in particular gets spammed a lot, probably more than it should as I have it specced for explosion on destruction.
He's not the GI but it means he has to be played differently.   Which for me means fun, I like to play different kits in different ways so finding a unique niche for one is:wizard:

Edit : Video finally ready

I hate how they're really short and pudgy.

The most fun Volus in my opinion, but I can't get myself to take this guy seriously (like any other Volus characters). I use the deadly Shuriken/Predator combo whenever I'm using the VolMerc.

Volus Merc is my favorite Volus, narrowly beating the Engineer.

His pets allow him to use some really heavy weapons (I use the Javelin) and mostly ignore Shield Boost (which is a ridiculous n00b crutch that also glitches your unfortunate teammates).

Cooldown is irrelevant with him IMO. Combat Drone has a 3.0 second cooldown with the Javelin.

Volus Merc is the worst kit in the game. That doesn't mean the kit is bad, only that pretty much anything else is better.

I would say he is hardish to score high with but not hard at all to play once you get used to him and you can pretty much control a lot of the enemies on the battlefield.

The TSab has grenades, you know. Equip grenade capacity and a decent weapon, and you're set.

Saboteur is better then the Volus Sentinel

Yes I agree. Astute observation.

I give him the Acolyte + Piranha with Disruptor ammo. I like it when Phantoms hurt themselves by targeting my Combat Drone and making it explode for damage, stagger and a Tech Burst. :)

Aren't Phantoms melee units?

yeah let me just skip the last two ranks of a Turian's passives...

anyways, the Volus merc isn't hard to play or a bad character at all. He is just super boring because other than your weapon, you really have no way of killing things. All of his powers are defensive.

I love the volus merc too, he's my favorite among the fat guys. But, since his powers don't do any decent damage, a very powerful weapon is needed on him. My preference goes to the PPR. This gun is indeed great against bosses and, against unarmored targets, a shock specialised drone will stagger them enough time to be killed. The drone does notably a very good job against phantoms.

Besides, as all volus, cloak and shield boost give him a good survivability.

Yes, so? I spawn it right next to them before I shoot them with the Acolyte. They do their dodge and the Combat Drone attacks them and gets their attention, they end up destroying it getting staggered or killed by the Tech Burst. They either die from that or the Acolyte shots. lol

Not only. Phantoms are really disturbed by the drone. I've been able to kill them with a PPR in platinum games thanks to their focus on the drone.

Are you insane?

I mean, yeah, it is a crutch skill - so far, it's all I've been able to do in Platinum (when I have some time next month, I'll try to step up my game, assuming enough people are around). And yes, that glitch is annoying, but it doesn't seem to happen *that* often, and it is easy enough to break out of, and the whole "not dying" thing has been an overall plus, at least when I've been playing with a Volus on my team.

More to the point: without Shield Boost, how the hell does your Volus survive on anything past Bronze?

Yes, so?

Enemies designated as "melee" units completely ignore all pets.

lol so that's why Banshees ignore it.

The Phantoms destroy it by shooting it?

Doesn't the "shock" evo partially counteract this?

I don't use pets very often, so I'm rusty, but I thought that staggering an enemy with shock forces it to aggro the pet.

I think that it turned out that that was a bit misleading. I don't think Phantoms ignore pets, and for some reason, Atlases do. The change had more to do with trying to make sure we couldn't 'block enemies by getting a few husks interested in a Decoy in a doorway than it did with anything else, I think.

What exactly are you gonna need 10% extra weapon damage for? What exactly are you gonna need 125 extra health and ~150 extra shields for? Why can't you just get all that back via consumables and let your skill points go toward making the powers themselves halfway decent?

No wonder most of you require the Venom to make him any good.

Same as how any of my other characters without crutch  "no die" buttons survive.

Volus have the same base Shield as base Humans, a Light Melee Cloak, and (in the Mercenary's case) 2 pets. So if you can survive as a base Human you would surely survive with no problem as a Volus, any Volus. But particularly the Volus Sentinel - it's practically impossible for enemies to find him. He can only die if you do something extremely stupid like running straight towards a Turret without your Cloak.

I use Shield Boost about once or twice per game on Gold (btw I don't use equipments on Gold) with the Volus Sentinel. With the Volus Enigneer I use it about once per wave.
