Monolith have announced their new LOTR game. Some of you may have heard about it a while back when it was revealed that the studio were working on a new cross generation open world AAA LOTR game. However it's still not the cancelled "White Council" game unfortunately as it features a pre-set character. LOTRO remains the only current experience in LOTR with an open world where you can create your own custom character.
In Shadow of Mordor, you play as a fallen Ranger named Talion and I say "fallen" as in "this guy was killed but now he's back alive after being raised from the dead by a wraith and given wraith-like abilities" (which also seems out of touch with LOTR lore).
According to Gameinformer, "Shadow of Morder offers a new chapter that fits comfortably between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players control a lone ranger by the name of Talion as he journeys deep into the heart of Mordor in the days before it transforms into a blasted hellscape. Along the way, developer Monolith is exploring a fascinating next-gen approach to enemies, encounters, and storytelling, one in which every player shapes their own story through the choices they make. The Nemesis System assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion. Our cover story recounts our extensive look at the game in action, from combat and leveling to story and setting."
It also features something called the "nemesis" system which sounds very interesting. The system "assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion" and apparantely we can "shape our own story" through a world which reacts to our choices.
It sounds like a solid RPG in the making and hopefully it'll end up standing out because of nicely executed features and not because it's "just another LOTR game" as someone might put it.
The nemesis system sounds especially neat and it sounds as if the game has some sort of Dark Souls death element in there (where you can't "die" in the traditional sense and that it mearly sets you back. Here, it seems that dying makes the enemy/enemies that killed you stronger).
In any case I am interested and just because it doesn't seem like your typical LOTR game.
