Monolith have announced their new LOTR game. Some of you may have heard about it a while back when it was revealed that the studio were working on a new cross generation open world AAA LOTR game. However it's still not the cancelled "White Council" game unfortunately as it features a pre-set character. LOTRO remains the only current experience in LOTR with an open world where you can create your own custom character.

middle-earth-shadow-of-mordor.jpg

In Shadow of Mordor, you play as a fallen Ranger named Talion and I say "fallen" as in "this guy was killed but now he's back alive after being raised from the dead by a wraith and given wraith-like abilities" (which also seems out of touch with LOTR lore).

According to Gameinformer, "Shadow of Morder offers a new chapter that fits comfortably between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Players control a lone ranger by the name of Talion as he journeys deep into the heart of Mordor in the days before it transforms into a blasted hellscape. Along the way, developer Monolith is exploring a fascinating next-gen approach to enemies, encounters, and storytelling, one in which every player shapes their own story through the choices they make. The Nemesis System assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion. Our cover story recounts our extensive look at the game in action, from combat and leveling to story and setting."

It also features something called the "nemesis" system which sounds very interesting. The system "assures that every enemy you fight is a named foe, and if they survive their battle with you, they continue to grow, improve, and act in the world, even as you attempt to do the same with Talion" and apparantely we can "shape our own story" through a world which reacts to our choices.

It sounds like a solid RPG in the making and hopefully it'll end up standing out because of nicely executed features and not because it's "just another LOTR game"  as someone might put it.

The nemesis system sounds especially neat and it sounds as if the game has some sort of Dark Souls death element in there (where you can't "die" in the traditional sense and that it mearly sets you back. Here, it seems that dying makes the enemy/enemies that killed you stronger).

In any case I am interested and just because it doesn't seem like your typical LOTR game.

So did I. I thought it was pretty good. Crappy loot but good combat.

As for this title:

Apparently, Talion can just walk into Morder.

*Mordor

Looks great. Doesn't seem very source-friendly but I can live with that. I like the death element added to spice things up. Every enemy fought is named? Are they going to name every single orc in a rabble?

I'm still waiting on a good Tolkien game where I can play the forces of darkness. Sort of like Conquest but more polished and massive in scale.

Be very, Very careful when buying this game. Monolith has done a really poor job with their last 2 games. I got Guardians of Middle Earth when it came out and that game was super buggy, still is. I rooted for Monolith to fix it for so long because it had alot of potential, but they kept failing at fixing it and ended up leaving the game a half-broken mess. After they realized they could never fix their game they gave it to another developer to port it to PC as a last effort for cash. That failed miserably and there are less than 50 players on that game.

Hopefully their bigger budget on this makes the game a success, but I would wait a little while after release before buying it.

I really want to like Monolith because GOME was really fun when not bugging out, but both GOME and Gotham City Impostors where poorly done and abandoned.

That's...a weird plot for LOTR.

Still, it looks like its got a few things going for it. That nemesis system sounds highly exploitable for amusement.

I just recently got that game from the Humble Bundle and I am definitely enjoying.  Just finished a play through on normal and now starting one on Heroic.

This new game sounds like it could be really cool, if a bit odd for a LOTR game.  I going to have to keep an eye out for new information.

Condemned 2 was awesome, Fear 3 was also fun. Especially the run for your life and horde. Granted it isn't scary, but It was solid and fun.

Dark Souls with Orcs. Considering I hated Dark Souls, I'm not looking forward to this. I did love War in the North, though.

This story doesn't seem Tolkien-esque... it disturbs me.

As a Tolkien fanatic I couldn't care less. The only ME game worth playing in LOTRO really. Too bad it's an MMO, since it's an amazing game if you're into Tolkien. And when they do expand on the universe, they do it right.

I,E: Forochel, which got like two paragraphs of content by Tolkien became an entire area where you actually felt it was part of the mythos.

Actually, you'll probably encounter Boromir at the gates of Mordor telling you that "One does not simply walk into Mordor fool!" He then starts ranting about your foolishness before **** slapping you around the face. The game then abruptly ends and hits to credits like Dark Matter.

And Return of the King. And the Third Age RPG. And Third Age: Total War.

I'd be a happy Uruk if we could get an official Total War-ish LOTR game. No, not BFME-style.

As to the actual lore, Tolkien's source material has never been 100% followed in a game/movie adaptation. And good thing, too.

"By stepping into the wraith world, the hero can view targets from afar, slow time in combat and even teleport distances to fatally stab enemies in the back - a murderous terrain traversal tool.

You can take control of an enemy's mind by laying a wraith hand on them - dominating them - when you've bested them in combat. You could send them away as spies to stab their generals in the back at carefully orchestrated moments, or you could send them away to tell of their encounter and sow fear in their ranks."

Lore = completely disregarded. Might as well throw Superman and a gun-wielding Batman into the game who show up at random sequences to help Talion in his quest as he rides a motorbike through Mordor while smoking a cigar and wearing sunglasses.

Although the nemesis system still sounds sweet.

There's a mod for Rome Total War, go check it out :-)

Some might disagree... but not me. I find some changes to be *improvements.* For example, Aragorn isn't a very...well, he isn't a very interesting character in the books. Viggo and PJ's take on him really went well.

As for plot-points, I can understand cutting a lot of them, and I actually approve of some changes, such as the King of the Dead. His role was so undermined for what it was built up for.

Someone else who feels the same way!

If they made Denethor less crazy, characterized Shagrat and Gorbag more, added in the Battle of the Shire (Seriously, they could add all of the epilogue but not that last bit?), nerfed Legolas, and made Gimli more of a character, the films would have been better.

Looks like a cross between Arkham, AC, and some other stuff. The Nemisis system sounds interesting. Don't know if it will be my type of thing yet though.
