Continuation: questions regarding my insanity playtrough

Got great responses, but as it seems, my questions might keep coming (with spoilers) so I'm starting a new thread here so I can hopefully get them answered as they show up.
As it happens I have one right now.
I have been doing all missions I can get my hands on, before Horizon. And there haven't been any problems so far, haven't died more than a couple of times until that smuggling mission with the 3 heavy mechs. And my god took atleast 10-15 times until I beat it with 6 bullets left.
(Felt the same problem on the Hahne Kedar facility with those small mechs, that it was taking it time, but those are so weak.)
So is this something I should worry about, can't remember any big mechs later on, but don't wanna put my points all wrong.
Playing as a soldier, going for AR, With incineration ammo, and that soldier specific thing. Vindicator. Really high dmg is the goal. But with the mechs it's like no damage. (only dmg worth mention is lining up a perfect headshot with mantis while using AR). Didn't notice changing ammo to disruptor either.
Sorry for the long post, gonna mark the actual question
Thx

You did take out the YMIRs one-by-one? That is: lured them uphill with the ML-77 (for which you don't need line-of-sight).Straken-SWE wrote...

Well I figured I should try that, but couldn't make it work. Took out the middle one first and then focused on the left, making it possible to hide behind that car, while finishing it, while still in cover from the one on the right. After that I just ran around the car 10 times until my team took it down ^^
Edit. I know my strategy might have been the biggest problem, but it's history, mission is done and over

Anyway, that rocket launcher is a viable weapon against heavy mechs and gunships.

As for YMIR mechs specifically as soldier, weapons in ME2 have defense multipliers and your best anti-shield weapon as a soldier is the shotgun (except perhaps Eviscerator since it sacrifices some shield multiplier for armor multiplier), with snipers and pistols as the best for armor. Assault rifles are in between. It is usually worthwhile to shoot their shields with the shotgun and then use the pistol on their armor, from a DPS standpoint, early game. Vindicator is theoretically decent against both shields and armor, but it is really best reserved for infantry units because of ammo capacity. The same is somewhat true of the Mantis, although it works ok as pure anti-armor if you really want.
Later game you will end up with the Viper which will be your best all around gun against the YMIR until you get an advanced weapon on Disabled Collector Cruiser. Then it will somewhat depend on what weapon you take, although all of the advanced weapons are fairly good at everything.
This is partly why I like to take Miranda and Garrus everywhere with me as a Soldier. They both have anti-shield and barrier powers, which is what Soldier is theoretically "weakest" against.

Do you want a spoiler on Kasumi's mission? I can give you a tip to make it go faster.
Y, spoiler it, have played the game and only doing this for the trophy so any tips is fine.
Where do I get the mattock? hated it in me3 and think I never tried it in me2

You need the Firepower pack DLC to get it in ME2.Straken-SWE wrote...

I did that sidequest using the cain. 1 shot and 30 seconds later I was back on the Normandy. I don't remember if I did it before or after Horizon.Straken-SWE wrote...

Slow but steady progress today, died lots of time on that Chief Roe in the beginning of Kasumi stealing memory quest, but not on the gunship itself. Bad thing is that there was lots of heavy weapon ammo being used during the fight.. Can I only get more ammo for heavy weapons during missions, or can I buy it. Also I only have Jack left before Horizon, but I get more ammo before that Praetorian at the end right?

Researching the Cain depends on the number of heavy weapon ammo upgrades you have. Do you have Zaeed? The paragon path on his mission yields a heavy weapon ammo upgrade. The Cain is not a particularly good weapon. Just one shot and only if it is fully charged.
The only way to get heavy weapon ammo is during missions. Can't buy it. In ME2 Shepard likes to go into battle totally unprepared: no restocking on medi-gel, no restocking on heavy weapons ammo. S/he likes to live life on the edge. S/he's totally extreme!
There will be more heavy weapon ammo on Horizon before you face the Praetorian. But really, you don't need it. Put your squad in cover and then just run around those trucks on the left side of the quad. Never let the Praetorian take a shot at you, just keep those trucks between you and it so it never has a LoS. Then let your squad mates kill it. Shepard never even needs to fire a single shot.

Must have missed one heavy weapon ammo somewhere.
And yes, I must say this, because I couldn't find it myself. There is an autosave between the waves of harbinger, drones, husks, scions and the Praetorian at the end.
@cap and gown - Did you know a way to take 6 missions between Horizon and the collector ship?

When you are on Tuchanka and finished either Mordin or Grunt, go back to the shuttle to exchange squadmates(if you wish) making sure not to press the button to take you back to the Normandy

Edit. Just read that 8 people is required to trigger it, so might just save Grunt and Mordin for later then, don't think it will matter that much in the end but
