Hi Everyone,

Jessica here! You might have seen the following message pop up today:
Based on the great feedback that we’ve received from
you, the BSN community, we are anxious to roll up our sleeves, get to work, and
level up your experience! As part of this process, you may notice some changes
over the next few weeks as we remove, change or add features to the site –
starting with some existing BSN features (Polls, Albums, Projects and Blogs)
moving to Read-Only as of November 19th 2013, and ultimately phased out of the
site.
This is all being done with the next stage of BSN in
mind. We apologize for any inconvenience and will continue to keep you updated.
We encourage you to take this time to back up or save any important data or
conversations you'd like to preserve.

If you've heard me talk at events or know anything about me, you know that my background is in Anthropology. I'm passionate about people. The changes that we have been slowly making over the past year on this site and the ones we will continue to make may seem random/out of context, but they are working in tandem to create an overall positive change in our online space. That doesn't always mean I want you to agree with each other or us - I am thrilled with constructive debate - but we walk away on good terms when the discussion is over. We are also working to update and modernize our space to make the (let me show you my new web dev word knowledge!) "user experience" friendlier and easier to navigate.

The changes we're making now are largely to help us focus in on what I think makes the BSN amazing at its core: intelligent, curious and passionate game content discussion. These are where the vast majority of our fans are spending their time and this is where we will be dedicating more resources and moderation. I want to aid your conversations around multiplayer strategy, walkthroughs, customization builds, and how to unlock that dialogue you've been trying to have with a certain character. We also are interested in your philosophical discussions on how the themes and metaphors in our games speak to you. The features we are making Read Only account for a very low level of activity of our fans' total time spent on BSN. I wouldn't phase out these aspects of the site if I didn't believe there are external spaces that do a better job of providing those services, so I encourage those of you who do to please back up your data and transfer over to another site/server.

Again, this is just one step in a multiphase process to make our online space closer to what it is when it's at its best -- a true community (unfortunately that word gets tossed around a lot, losing most of its real meaning in my opinion) of individuals who come together to discuss a common passion in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment. Think of it as my challenge to bring the feeling of a convention to our corner of the web.

Feel free to leave any questions, comments, or ideas you have for the future here. I just ask that you keep your conversations around these changes to this thread so as to not disrupt the other sections of the site.

Thanks!  <3

EDIT: We have determined Projects will NOT be set to Read Only and are to continue to remain active.

Hi Jessica,

Would this include groups to be phased out as well?

The fun stops here.

I for one like the albums (ability to upload and tag others in images) and polls.

And we need a BSN app.

Any word on things that will get added? Or will just the forum remain (since this is mentioned as the "core")?

Polls no big deal for me.
Projects no big deal for me as BioWare hasn't really supported any building for some time.
Blogs, no big deal for me as people can post blogs elsewhere.

Albums is significant if you ask me. A lot of people have made use of them through the life of this site. This will be a step backwards.

Wait so your taking out polls, blogs, and albums?

Why?

How long is it expected to be read-only? Many people use these features and don't discuss on the boards, removing them might scare away friends we've met on the BSN.

I have a question...WHERE DID YOU SEE ANYONE ASKING FOR THIS?

Really. REALLY?!

Have you people lost your minds? Sure the bots are a problem with those, but hey, make a "put email hare for anti-bot activation code" A forum Standard will not be so hard.

So are we getting a real custom avy? Some new features? A forum layout that make sense? Off topic getting chopped?

Now I'm trying to be reasonable here, but Where is the Carrot for the stick you are smacking a great many of us in the face with?

I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking it, but I will ask it. So what are we getting in return? Or is this still a "privilege" to even post here? Because from what I read in the what we would like to see on the BSN forum thread, this isn't anything we asked for. So I will ask again what are the POSITIVES, of this change?

Hi Fast Jimmy! We're in the process of developing better systems for groups but we will continue to support them as a feature (unless something crazy happens like the Tank Girl universe becomes a reality and we no longer use the internet because we're fighting over water as a resource...) But yeah, unless something unforseeable happens, my plan is for groups to stay in place, and eventually have better versions.

Always a wise move to remove things that the community enjoys in order to improve their experience.

No albums?! But how will I now be able to know what people look like?! I can't communicate with faceless people!

No polls?! But..but...they entertain me :(

I really don't see how removing features makes for a better community.

That being said, I won't miss polls at all, those were always trash.

While it's true there are better places to upload pictures or to write a blog, I fail to see what benefit comes from their removal.

Also sucks to see projects being phased out, there are lots of good projects to be found here. Granted we have the Nexus for Dragon Age, but still, meh.

EDIT: Is the removal of groups gonna be the next big stage?

I'm gonna be neutral here, but I would think it'd be smart to introduce something new and fresh or update something positively around the same time something is being removed, to avoid reactions like this is bound to get.

Polls, albums and blogs are the most fun things on here. A lot of dear memories will get lost in the process and that's sad.
I know a lot of people who will probably leave the side, including me.

I don't understand this. In an effort to improve the experience you remove the features that people like? Reducing the social aspects of a social network in mind. The premise of a social network depends on peer communication through a web platform. All BSN needs really is optimized CSS not a removal of features. This is not really logical.

Hi Jessica. Thanks for the quick response.

I, too, hope that the Apocalypse does not come to claim us all, leaving us to wage war for water. But hey... if I get a tank out of it? Sure, why not.
