Also, a bit off topic here:

How do you become a Mod? Do you need to have worked at Bioware?

lolwhat.
Didn't you just say previously for the others discussing the mods too not go off-topic?
And now here you are going off-topic.
*insertjokerclap.gifhere*

Well, yeah, but what I originally intended was that those people didn't discuss mods or Bioware Dev, because this isn't a discussion of who is better or what Bioware needs to do about its personnal or what else.

Also, I added this: "Also, a bit off topic here". If you don't want to read it, fine. I warned you. But those people didn't make this and were derailing the thread, making it a Bioware staff discussion not a BSN Read Only Changes.

This is a video game website to promote video games made by BioWare. To have lengthy discussions about ponys or what is your favorite album or whatever serves no purpose and has become a breeding ground of nastiness (just look at the name calling and comments in teh posts at the top of this page alone).

I know that when I left BioWare they were planning some major changes to the BSN. I hope they follow through with the, The changes Jessica mentions seem like the first step.

LOL

Compared to the game forums, the OT is like a collection of school nuns. :innocent:

I have to agree. Off Topic is full of genuinely friendly people having good natured fun.

The actual game boards are full of sniping, factions fighting against each other, political and religious propoganda, sexual depravity and meanness (to both other posters as well as Bioware). If a quarter of the stuff that happens there happened in Off Topic, it would be shot down in a heartbeat. Because people can hide behind it being "on topic," things dan get escalated to crazy levels.

If you are going to make all these changes then why even have a "bioware SOCIAL network" why not just get a new domain and call it "Bioware Gaming Discussion Network". Isn't the whole point of having a "social" network the ability to talk about anything social? Seems like all you are doing is taking the "social" away from us? Why? Who is it hurting? Or is it a EA/BW cost thing? Do they not want the cost of having a social site? If so just tell us and be honest for ONCE????

Damn Chris, where have you been? You think the OT boards are a breeding ground of nastiness? The DA:I boards have been the epicenter of all the nonstop bickering over social politics and comparisons of gamers who make unpopular in game choices to real world monstrosities. I don't see how having an RWBY thread or whatnot make these boards any more toxic.

Really, if you don't like BSN or its features, what exactly you're still doing here?

I think I see what you're doing :bandit:

Anyway, what I'm saying is that I do like the BSN and its features. And this seems like a change to the worse to me. Because you're taking away features that I like about the BSN. So I'm complaining about the features that I like about the BSN being taken away.

That makes me a whiner that needs to go away, doesn't it.

I think you missinterpreted my line of tought. What I meant was if you don't like it and keep Posting Threads, like "Waaah, I don't like BSN, I'm gonna cry for what Bioware did/didn't do to me, I'm gonna leave because BSN Changed, etc, etc, etc" ,  then you're a whiner that is actually WANTING attention from other people.

I can say that if my game gets locked, for example, that I actually going to leave the forums (and maybe do a thread about it, since I have friends, ya know, ROF) for a couple of time, because(IMO) there won't be another thing to do, since the other part of the forums don't interest me big, until the next ME Comes out or when I beat DA:O and DA:I since this place will surely be full of spoilers.

You're giving your feedback, not whining.

Granted, but that top point can be fixed with better moderation.

I'm saying that by Chris' definition, I'm a whiner. What I saw with what you were saying was that you were doing a close and dark satire version of what Chris was saying, since I believe his message was rather obtuse and flaming. I'll be the first to tell you I'm not a fan of his, and that the reason I say I was a whiner was because, as it seems to me, anything negative at all, even in a constructive criticism form constitutes whining in Chris' eyes.

To sum it up, yes, I know I'm giving my feedback. However, my feedback isn't what they want it to be, therefore it's whining. Maybe I'm just too jaded, and I'm not going to stoop to being an asswipe on here, but that is legitimately how it seems some of the feedback is treated: if it's not what they want to hear, then it's crap whiners. People bring up legitimate points, and Chris dismisses them as being the reason for the change.

Don't worry I'll continue to spread the word, of the legend that was bobobo.

Sorry I'm super confused. If it's read only, can't people still read and reference that blog?

You see, the problem was, sometimes people have technical difficulties and need help with the troubleshooting. I used to provide this help through private messages, but now that thsoe are restricted to friends, the comments on blogs have been my primary means of communication.

If anything the OT forum is well behaved compared to the rest of the forum, not to mention the now thankfully locked character and romance forum. Honestly the DA:I forum tends to contain more arguing about race or sexuality or people projecting their IRL views on the templar/mage issue than anything related to gameplay or story.

[meme image removed]

If forum toxicity remains Bioware's overriding concern, and if these changes are meant to combat that ... you're going about it the wrong way.

The OT is basically the least "toxic" part of the site, apart from the sections devoted to KotOR and NWN and such which are so untraveled they might as well be mythical. You remember that SomethingAwful BSN compilation made a couple years back, which started the legend of Tali's Sweat and no doubt caused Bioware some embarassment? That was aaaaaaaaaaaall in the regular parts of the site.

Closing down the Character/Romance forum was a start, but if you really want to get the "toxic" nature of the forums under control, closing blogs, polls, albums, and projects isn't going to help a whit with that.

I'm with this.  From what time I've spent browsing the OT board, it seems more friendly than just about every other board aside maybe the multiplayer board when I last checked there.

You've never come across as a deviant to me. But when they went Base Delta Zero on the forum, I doubt even 50% of the users were truly out of control. Unfortunately that was enough to turn it into Mos Eisley.

It really gave off a very negative impression of the BW brand. Here, you had threads with several hundred pages(or more) dedicated to some very minor romance "feature" that's a few mins of content at best, while threads dedicated to actual important parts of the game were fairly neglected in comparison(romancable character threads completly dwarfed non-romancables too).

That's part of why the BSN was a laughing stock on other forums like Gamefaqs and got the "dating sim" rep for the games.

That stuff should remain off the main forums and in groups.

Neither was I. I've never really stuck around character forums for too long myself. The Cullen fans I've seen have been nice enough people to talk to, but I've met a fair share of Anders fans who wouldn't exactly fit the definition of polite and respectful. *shrugs* Then again, basically, every fanbase has its detractors.

I was. I was there man. I regret my participation in that, and now I can say that several strategic bans would have solved the problem.

If I remember right though, Chris legit disliked the romance and character forums even when a fairly alright place where people kept to themselves.

I agree with the two above me.

Based on my limited experience in the Story and DAI forums (which I tend to avoid for the very reasons described) I would have to say the first quote's assessment of Off-Topic is... well... way off.

It is a considerably more friendly and civil place than the rest of the forums, by a rather large and unmistakable margin.

Well, yeah.  Compared to the 90% of posters who only post here and there without trying to get into flame wars, chances are I would guess the people responsible were a few people who got overzealous and posted much more than your average poster (all based off of just guessing and not looking into the events).

The others are correct though in that I can see how Bioware and the mods may have been embarassed in general by how the romance threads always dwarfed every other type of thread.  Character threads can generally be good when its just about having fun and discussing the characters, but when you have Anders fans going into Fenris' thread to bash him and vice versa, it can get ugly.  Same for many characters.

Oh believe me, I'm a Miranda fanatic. I'm sure you've probably picked up on it. I'm every bit as 'deviant' as many others. I'm just not a total jackass about it. As you say, I'm not out of control, even if I do believe Miranda is an exceptionally good model or example for the type of woman I'm into. Even though I acknowledge the romance as a relatively 'minor' component in the external gist of the technical game, in the story, it does play an a very large role for my story that I like to create with my Shepard.

Then again, I'm a guy who believes that if a person isn't bothering you, just leave them to their own interests (unless it becomes something truly bizarre, like necrophilia, bestiality, etc.)

Seriously, folks, you want to see a really toxic OT, go check out the WoW forums.

Who knows how they are now, but back when I was playing WoW seriously, they were little more than an extension of /b/, and frequently launched raids on other parts of the forum - especially the RP section.

The pony thread, the forum games, and the like are goddamn models of Internet civility compared to them, or the DA:I section, or the ME3 MP section, or ...

That's the thing, though. Being a jackass about it is part of how I would define "deviant". I'm a big fan of Garrus and Tali and Morrigan and others, and I enjoy the romance stuff for what it is when it's present. Many are like that and don't go overboard with it. But the Character/Romance Forum seemed overrun with the types who do.
