Wow. All these changes to enhance the community and user experience. Lovely. That must mean we can message people not on our friendlist soon again. Fantastic. :P

That was probably done so people would stop messaging mods, which had become very common, and use the report button, which was broke for a very long time..

Still seems like overkill.

You see, the problem was, sometimes people have technical difficulties and need help with the troubleshooting. I used to provide this help through private messages, but now that thsoe are restricted to friends, the comments on blogs have been my primary means of communication.

My guess...

Direct those with issues to Answers EA.

For help with using the character creator to bypass the limitation of not using custom avatars? I think not.

I seem to recall someone asking about that over there and being directed to the blog post.

in my opinion polls are the most important part of BSN, not only to the BSN community but also to Bioware when determining who the majority is, I am very disappointed to see it go away.

They'll probably still have polls made by Bioware, but they'll either be PR nonsense or really softball stuff.

There were two or three polls regarding the forum (all off-site)....took part in all of them...atm strongly suspect my votes didn't mean anything.

I'm fine with the removals. I hope there will be a more advance search function in the near future. Perhaps improved icons, so that there are no unnecessary pixels around them. A more unified game profile would also be nice.

The changes we're making now are largely to help us focus in on what I think makes the BSN amazing at its core: intelligent, curious and passionate game content discussion. These are where the vast majority of our fans are spending their time and this is where we will be dedicating more resources and moderation. I want to aid your conversations around multiplayer strategy, walkthroughs, customization builds, and how to unlock that dialogue you've been trying to have with a certain character. We also are interested in your philosophical discussions on how the themes and metaphors in our games speak to you.

Now would embedding a YouTube video be open for discussion? I know it is not necessary, but it can add a more visual appeal to threads. Or how about allowing users to post a paper-doll of all the equipment and their stats for certain builds. The user would select the paper-doll button and follow a series of windows to produce code for the doll in their post.

Such as class>weapons>helm>armor>guantlets>boots>accessories.

Crazy! But the problem is that until things are 100% locked, they can
change (which sounds redundant). So we really can't say anything until
it's locked in. This applies for any feature in a game or any
announcement we make. We can't talk about it until we're ready. I don't
ask that you trust that what we're doing is going to be good. Show,
don't tell. If you choose to stick around when we reveal those things, I
will let you be the judge of it.

Unrelated. I've never been a fan of distracting bad news with shiny things.

Wow, so going to delete (we should backup and save) old posts that told me how to mod so have them bookmarked, no new projects, delete, lock, get rid of, but there are shiny toys that you can't tell me about.

I'm INTJ and somehow I fail to see how the personality type is going to make me think that what BSN is doing is a good idea.  But then DAI won't (from all indications) be something that can be modded so I guess there will be no real reason for me to be on BSN at all when you have removed all the DAO related topics and functionality.

Great way to drive away at least some of the community.:(

I'm sorry to say this really ticks me off. Functionality has been stripped from this community site for over a year now. We've not been gaining anything in return. Now we're losing even more on no promise whatsoever.

Here's what's been happening form my perspective.
1. I am in the femshep fandom, our subforum vanished because of infighting in that subforum. The alternative we were suggested was to use groups. Now you are removing groups.
2. I am an active modder and have been for years, people contact me often with questions and requests. Since the messaging restrictions were put in this has also been made harder, less appealing to people.
3. I use both blogposts and projects to put forward tutorials and modding recources. I have a modding thread that links to all my projects. I have stuck years of work in all of these so when you remove the creation of new Projects and Blog functionality you are scattering this info and making it harder to find. It also makes me having a thread on the BSN to keep all info as close together as possible absolutely meaningless.

It is more logical for me, if i'm stripped from further project and blog functionality, to move everything I've done offsite. You literally have years of modding, tutorial and resource wealth in your projects and blogs spanning over many of your games so it will be fractioned from that point on.

Look, ultimately I will be happy to host my modding resources and guides somewhere else but you've been fractioning the 'Bioware fandom" for over a year now and that's more your loss then ours. You have fans here that have established something over years of loving your games and being here, specifically here. That's what official forums are for. Honestly, those are the people you do this for, so what is going on!
Change is good yes, an overhaul is LONG overdue but you can't take vital parts of a community away. At the very least functionality should be preserved untill there is an alternative to take that functionality over. I understand that purging and starting fresh is usefull, but I think project functionality should seriously be preserved.

Also I'd personally seriously suggest updating your OP with the extra information you've posted in responce to people about changes, because it's rather hard to find scattered over the pages.

Can I assume you intend to replace these features with something more conducive to game content discussion and feedback, or are you simply removing these features and shifting the focus to the forum only?

Yes, "game content discussion" is a very purposeful choice of words on my part (and no, I'm a writer and academic by training not a PR spin doctor LOL).

I do not want to police or force people to use our albums to only post about our games. Same with our blogs.
That would make this site a very negative place and it would shift our moderation away from keeping people safe and conversations on topic.

We are also working on a better system for polls and on our end we're already using surveymonkey to conduct polls (you might remember we did a DragonAge poll on gameplay a few weeks back). I also think that the way polls are used on BSN right now is not very scientific or representative. So we'll make polls more fun and less masked with a feeling of authority.

So yes, these moves are around focusing the site back toward game content discussion and away from making the site a catch all. We are working on ways to bring visual elements to better support celebrate fan fiction, art, cosplay etc but that's further down the road.

And you will still be able to download projects, just not create new ones.

It's good to hear that you intend to improve these systems rather than outright removing them.  I'm not going to list off what we'd hope to see as the changes come along, as others (e.g. @Mazder on pg 5 of this thread, and @Estelindis) have already done so quite eloquently. What I will say is this. The polls, blogs, projects, and albums for more than a few of us are what start the "intelligent, curious and passionate" discussions. I'm not sure how much activity registers when we are simply viewing or reading these features, but it may be just as representative of inactivity as trolled polls are for community feedback. I'm looking forward to the changes in store whenever they get locked-in, but it'll be hard to accept anything until we have something more tangible.

It might be helpful to have a spin doctor friend if you can find one. I have a feeling that much of the angst being expressed is in part related to the wording of both the popup message and your OP here. Looking at "As part of this process, you may notice some changes over the next few weeks as we remove, change or add features to the site – starting with some existing BSN features (Polls, Albums, Projects and Blogs) moving to Read-Only as of November 19th 2013, and ultimately phased out of the site" what a lot of people seem to read first are "remove," the features that they use, and then straight to "ultimately phased out" -- hence the general impression of removing "social" from BSN; especially among those whose English isn't quite as good. Most people don't like the feeling of the floor disappearing from directly beneath them, and that's what the announcement feels a bit like. Leading with "add, change, or remove" instead is very subtle, but would've left a different impression.

I really wish you could "shout from the rooftops what we're planning and show [us] the beautiful mock ups and prototypes and seriously crazy web development things" and can appreciate that you're making the effort to not give us empty promises on things that aren't confirmed. Don't be afraid to give us the benefit of the doubt and when the time does come, we're part of the same community so tell us as a member of the community and less formally cautious (i.e. speak plainly). I'm sure there are more than a few of us that still welcome open and honest communication over mob jeering.

Side note on @Mazder's point about market research... I'm one of the many that follow you on Twitter, but neither that nor Facebook, nor even iOS is necessarily the best source for feedback; at least, not in exclusion. I still remember when we were asked about FemShep's marketing image for ME3. I never cast a vote because I don't use Facebook. More importantly, a lot of the more detailed opinions that I'd heard at the time were that the community wanted the ginger coloring (which we enevitably got), but the blonde's design. It looked better so many votes went to the blonde instead. In other words, insufficient context. So a good poll tool not only for community use, but for your own research is very important.

All the best, Jessica
I hope most of the flames you get from this point are the ones that'll keep you warm over the winter.

I still want to know why projects are being taken down, Bioware does know that
1>Not everyone likes and uses Nexus(for solid reasons) to host mods, this place has a number of said modders who have alot of work on this site.
2:No site really hold ME mods, thus this is the place to do it.

Albums I can understand to a point, polls maybe, but projects? Hell no.

Honestly Jessica these changes seem more negative then anything else.  It sounds like your just removing a ton of fan features based off non-existent fan feedback.

I am looking through the suggestion thread you made a while back and I can find tons of great suggestions in the first page alone, not 1 of which I have seen implemented. And yet I cannot find any user mentions regarding the changes that are been made.

What exactly does read only mean? Does it mean that others cannot view posts or what? I am confused. Well these changes are unnecessary in my opinion. If you are so worried about people doing bad stuff on BSN, why not just permanently ban them from the site?

I'd imagine it would be similar to a locked thread; where you won't be able to update or post anything to it.

I have a new appreciation for the forum thanks to the OT area. It means I can talk about games I'm playing or TV shows I'm watching inbetween waiting for the next DA or ME game. People seem less toxic and much nicer than in the main games discussion forum, and I like it when people are nice to each other online instead of just spewing toxic bile in the form of opinions. But hey, if spewing toxic bile is your thing, who am I to say anything.

Anyway, I think removing the OT forum is just plain stupid, like others have said, it's full of a lot more polite discourse and seems to need the least moderation. I think its far more welcoming than the rest of the site (aside from groups that is) tbh.
