No no. We do not want to charge for fan art (cosplay, modding, fiction, art, etc). It's just not ethically right.
You aren't charging for the modding.
You are recouping your hosting expenses, since your business model is different than hosting websites.
Semantics is sometimes everything.
The key would be an equitable formula.
I hope this gets put on your serious discussion table as a way to possibly continue to support modding now and into the future.
At some point a discussion with the modders and some of the modding-fans would be an interesting trial.
I'll think you'll find the projects oriented people (and some of their keen supporters) to be quite resasonable and engaging in general.
PS. Edited to add 2nd paragarph to conclude this thought path in a better way.)

Thank you so much for responding to our concerns, they were weighing heavily on us.
I understand wanting to do an overhaul on the site. It truly is needed. I hope a solution can be reached where so much of your fan's content won't be gone forever.

I'm glad to hear it. While I don't know that what I have in my head for the future will be what every single here person wants (oh gosh I know it won't!), Jesse and I are both very excited for the possibilities ahead - I mean, we're online at 7/8PM respectively on a Friday night talking about it.
This is something I spend a lot of time on so every single decision has a lot of weight. And when there's a reason, we are more than happy to re-evaluate.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

frustrating, but we appreciate it.
Before I say what I'm going to state below, I do first want to extend a thank you. All the players who have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours either building or playing with mods for BW games appreciate you taking this step. You don't have to and you are choosing to, so that deserves a proper thanks.
I do, however, want to point out two things:
1. I think in the future, the community would appreciate being a part of the dialogue before an announcement like this is made. Rather than having major announcement like this made "at us," that has such a large impact on us.
2. The fact that BW (and I'm sure it isn't just one person) would make a decision to remove Projects based even partly under the impression there were "better places to host" them (Nexus), when Nexus doesn't support Mass Effect, is a pretty big dropped ball, imo. It takes all of 2 seconds to head over to any Nexus site, select the dropdown menu at the top right and see that Mass Effect isn't a part of their network. Anyone who has personally spent any time on the Nexus downloading mods, knows that Mass Effect isn't a part of their network.
Honestly, it seems to me this decision was made by folks who don't themselves mod their games, and therefore see no reason to support BW's modding community. They were looking for things that were "easy" to cut, and Projects seemed to be an easy target...that "low traffic" and all...

Agree with the fascist part
But you undermine your arguement with the whole "underused niche features" part.

I'm so glad I've moved beyond Bioware and EA and all their fascist BS. "Preserve the Community" - my &(#! At least have the courage to state the plain fact that the reason why the albums and projects are being dropped is that it costs money to provide file storage - money EA would rather spend on sophomoric games that pale in comparison to the titles Bioware released under Interplay and Atari.
Considering Bioware managed to release mediocre games like Baldur's Gate 1 and Neverwinter Nights under their own volition, I don't think we can really blame EA for all their bad titles.

I'm sympathetic to people who will lose work they've spent a long time creating, or who really enjoy those features of the forum, but Bioware's web team clearly have data on how many people use each service for how long.
As the original post said: "The features we are making Read Only account for a very low level of activity of our fans' total time spent on BSN."
The fact that a very small, but very active and earnest group of fans love these features isn't necessarily a reason to keep them around. When you're heavily engaged in a tight-knit community it can seem as if those features are the most important and popular things in the world, even if the vast majority of other users on the forum don't use them and might not even know they exist.
From an insider perspective these features aren't underused and aren't niche, but that's not the position Bioware is coming from - they have actual data about how people use the BSN.
(Though for what it's worth, I think in this case opening up a dialogue with people who use Albums/Projects/whatever would've been a better move than announcing a deadline.)

There isn't really a lot of activity in the Projects because people go there for one reason, to get a mod and go on about their business. Only time people go back is too get another mod or ask for technical help.
As Projects may not be as active out of everything else, it's still very important because Projects is the only place that supports Mass Effect mods and other Dragon Age mods that aren't on Nexus.
Luckily, Jessica understands that and she will look into keeping the Projects.
Really if they wipe Blogs and Polls first, I bet thats a lot of data right there that they could manage keeping Projects, but remove the ones that have been abandoned or haven't been used sense many moons ago.
Blogs and the occasional poll is just filled with Football and Soccer and other bs that doesn't even need too be on this site.

No need to have dead silly polls cluttering up the place.
Thats what people need to do with their polls after a certain amount of time is too just remove them.
Same with their projects, if they're abandoned ; no longer functioning ; haven't been updated in a couple years ect, should be removed. Shouldn't take away everything, just clean out the polls, projects and blogs.
3-4 months ago before I took a break from here, there was so many Football and Soccer blogs by spammers, just spamming up the joint. That's unecessary and they should at least like once a month wipe some of it clean.

Thank you for looking into keeping projects active and the answer on the DA Toolset Wiki.
PLEASE give us (the modding community at least) more than a week's notice when you consider changes to the project pages (and any of the modding resources) in the future. And ask for our feedback BEFORE the change - if you had done so...... well, you might not have upset so many people by trying to tell us that this was a change that we wanted.

I want to thank all of the modders who posted mature and adult responses to this topic. If the conversation had degenerated into mud slinging and hatefulness, I don't believe that Jessica/Jesse/Bioware would have been so willing to address our concerns.
