If space is a problem why not a system to delete many of the older groups and projects no longer active? It is very difficult to search for groups so as a result there are many duplicates. The project section as a whole isn't too commonly used and that could probably be wrapped into an improved group capability.

Spammers have got to be a major drain as well, but I would imagine that there are some methods that could reduce that, although nuking the blog section from orbit would probably be necessary. They pretty much own that area.

They could probably analyze these features for inactivity but it would probably cost them more rather than just deleting everything. I don't think they want to make the costs for that

Just find staff that arn't lazy, I used to on boards I modded or Admin would erase anything not active for 9 months. That way it never piled up much.

Comment @ Tips.

However you have to remember that these guys are not using forum frameworks and probably wrote everything from the ground up. It would probably be much more difficult for them

Now that I think about it, all of the gif avatars and signatures on the site probably use up a huge amount of data too. This is the only forum that I've been on where people actually use gif avatars.

I'm disappointed to see these particular changes.

Although I use those features less than the others on BSN, I do use them, and it is a shame to see them go.

How will removing albums change Groups, since many have an Album of uploaded images associated with them?

Makes me wonder if and when they'll remove the ability of uploading characters (be they with customised images or not).

Does this mean allowing us to upload custom avatars without having to use the Dragon Age: Origins work around will be implemented?

I know a lot of people were requesting this function.

Projects are the thing that concern me the most, there are some high quality Dragon Age and Mass Effect mods that aren't available anywhere else online, to my knowledge, and there's no guarantee that the creators will be around when this takes effect, to provide links to other download sites.

Between this and the change to PMs, I see no actual positive changes, only things being done to shut down social interaction. Sorry if it sounds harsh or alarmist, but I don't know how else to see this. It really feels like Bioware is slowly dismantling its own community.

Yeah, tbh if you guys had just said "ok, we need to remove those features to cut down on costs or because we don't like having them anymore, sorry", that would've been a lot better.

The loss of this features isn't quite significant really (save for projects, at least for those that aren't on other sites), but it's lame to proclaim this as some sort of improvement.

And then follow it up with not introducing the ability to add custom avvies

I must admit I'm a little surprised at the decision to remove the most active parts of the site... :o

You haven't been to many forums then.

I'd imagine that's the next step, if this truly an issue of data.

Well there is a simple way around it via a custom upload function using weblinks. But meh, bsn.

So, in other-words, I have 6 days to find another place to work on my Bioware project? The group will stay, but the project will be read-only in 6 days?

I can understand changing the polls and blogs (the format is really bad right now) but removing them is odd. I never used projects or albums so i can't really comment on them but i still don't understand why they need to go.

I wouldn't phase out these aspects of the site if I didn't believe there are external spaces that do a better job of providing those services, so I encourage those of you who do to please back up your data and transfer over to another site/server.

Lolol, let's cut the bull crap.

The order has come from on high that the server space and cost is escalating and the budget won't cover the cost of servers and site upkeep. So most of the aspects like albums, projects and blogs are getting cut because of the spam issues surrounding it and the increasing cost as new accounts are made and space taken increases.

I'm shooting in the dark now cause without any numbers near me all I will do is assume. I feel like the website could sustain itself if they had an ad system in place. This place actually seems very active unless the variable of growth is much greater than the revenue that would be generated. I hope you guys did a cost benefit analysis cause I am pretty sure half of your server is unused accounts. How about only allocated these resources until a user has been verified? Or has the damage been done to your database already?

As one of the first (if not the first) non-Bioware person to register on the site (in Edmonton on the day it was unveiled at the second Dragon Age Builder's Event) I am disappointed but not surprised by this action. As ever it seems that EA's only response to anything that doesn't make them money (and even things that do) is to keep making cuts until it is no longer viable and then quietly dispose of it.

Back then, in addition to supporting the then soon to be released Dragon Age: Origins, the site was set up ostensibly to support Dragon Age and NWN modders and while it has never fully realised that promise it never entirely failed either. There are some groups and projects that only exist here: mods that can only be obtained here; projects that only exist because of connections made here. I'm working on one of those right now (or would be if I wasn't posting).

Consequently I would ask you to reconsider the decision regarding projects since there are many valuable mods which have been authored by community members that are no longer active and won't necessarily see your pop-up. Nonetheless people will be downloading and enjoying their mods and it would be a shame if this content was destroyed along with the modding community you no longer want to support.

I know that in a previous update Jeff was able to identify projects that had downloads available so you could easily retain these projects. If you have to do something then make these projects read only and remove all the projects without downloads. However if they really are such a minor part of the community as you claim then the costs (and therefore the savings) must be minimal compared to hosting the forums so why not make a commitment to the modding community and keep them the way they are?

Modders have poured their souls into into their creations some of which are as good, or better, than the original games. Every day people discover or rediscover NWN and DA:O and that's largely down to the mods that have added years (over a decade in NWN's case) to the life of these games. Some of those mods only exist in the projects on this site so I'm begging you to give them a stay of execution.

Thanks,
Sunjammer
(NWN and DA:O Modder)

Oh noes Jessica, you can't do this! If you change my blog on how to upload custom avatars to read only, I'll fade into obscurity! Where will my sense of self worth come from, that blog was all I had! QQ
