I hope they do remove the OT board. It was a recommendation of mine to do so years ago.
This is a video game website to promote video games made by BioWare. To have lengthy discussions about ponys or what is your favorite album or whatever serves no purpose and has become a breeding ground of nastiness (just look at the name calling and comments in teh posts at the top of this page alone).
I know that when I left BioWare they were planning some major changes to the BSN. I hope they follow through with the, The changes Jessica mentions seem like the first step.
Wait, did Chris Priestly actually say this?
Well. That quote certainly embodies the cynical "how dare you question our genius" marketing that Bioware's been known for in recent years. Points for honesty that all the talk about social this and that is just a foil for setting up a PR pipeline. I think everyone knew that more or less, but it's polite not to talk about it. Also when it works, it's because there is a give and take between the company who's trying to market their products and the fanbase who provides word of mouth and viral promotion.
I'm not a marketing person, but it seems to me that sites like Facebook and Twitter work because they get people on them, hanging out, checking in daily, spending time on the site, some of which is bound to be spent looking at what you need them to look at in order to sell your stuff. If you never get eyes on your site, you won't get that opportunity to do your super-cool marketing. It's obvious that the projects and blogs section is not great here, but that's because it's barely functional and not user-friendly. It requires blogs because you need lists of links in order to be able to find good projects. And giving the heave ho to people who are actually creating content that enhances your games... well, it's your site, but that seems counter-productive to me.
Finally, to state the obvious, if you make games worth talking about, the problem of people not talking about your games solves itself. It seems to me that the toxicity has especially come from the DA2 and ME3 forums. Happy fans police threads themselves, without a lot of mod interference. Take the Elder Scrolls thread here in Off Topic. It's been going for 2 years, on topic, very rarely with even a glimmer of controversy or rancor. There's only so much of the iron fist that will turn around a rancorous environment. It's liable to make things worse.
Bless your hearts, Jessica and Alan, for being the good cops.
