I hope they do remove the OT board. It was a recommendation of mine to do so years ago.

This is a video game website to promote video games made by BioWare. To have lengthy discussions about ponys or what is your favorite album or whatever serves no purpose and has become a breeding ground of nastiness (just look at the name calling and comments in teh posts at the top of this page alone).

I know that when I left BioWare they were planning some major changes to the BSN. I hope they follow through with the, The changes Jessica mentions seem like the first step.

"Nastiness?" Have you been to the DA:I forums lately? They're the new ME3 forums... and the ME3 forums are still quite nasty themselves.

Or are you just being evil?

So, Chris, you think ALL the projects should be deleted? I can see if a project has been abandoned 2-3 years ago, but what about the ones in planning and testing, not to mention all the great mods that are finished.

Heh. The last time you paraphrased that quote, Allan threatened bans.

Albums I guess is the only one I am a bit sad about. It was nice to see some user collections and I liked updating my Shepard and Litho albums as I got stuff. I know there are plenty of external hosting sites for that, but its not really the same as seeing it attached to a profile. Be cool if there was some sort of replacement in time for this.

Looking forward to updates though!  Been a few years since BSN arrived and it be great to see it develop further.

Maybe I'd get busy and forget to check up on my Projects for a few weeks when I'd get really busy, but now....:crying:

Not my call anymore. BioWare is making a change and apparently making some sacrifices. This may not be the case as this is a 4 hour old announcement, so we'll see what happens.

Something has to be done. Years ago, around Neverwinter Nights, original KotOR and Jade Empire, the forums (before the BSN) used to win awards for how well run they were. BioWare had a great community and even when things went wrong, fans were polite and we all worked together to make changes for the better.

Since then, things have turned bad. Yes, there are all sorts of reasons why this could have happened. Blame BioWare & EA. Blame the fans. Blame the games. Blame me. Whatever. There was no one thing that made things go bad and there is no easy fix to make things better.

BioWare has chosen to start making changes and now is a great time. Dragon Age Inquisition looks like it will be much improved over DAII. Along with new Hardware, this is a great chance to bring in new fans. The ME trilogy ended and we will see what BioWare does with the next chapter. However, this is a good time to change things significantly here.

BioWare made big changes between Jade Empire and Dragon Age Origins. They threw away the old forums and started teh BSN. Now it looks liek they have chosen it is time to make more changes and we'll see what they come up with. Now is a good time before DAI and MENext get into the full swing.

And for everyone who is "Goodbye BSN. The future will suck. Yaddayaddayadda" and all the pitiful whining (not eveyone is doing this, it seems to only be a few childish troublemakers), if that is how you feel GO AWAY. You are likely part of the reason that things are changing here. The future isn't bad. The future is different.

I'm sad that these features are being removed. I think that you come across as a lovely person, Jessica, so I want to believe that you have something better in mind for the future. On balance, I think that it would have made some people feel better about this announcement if you had mentioned some specific things that you intend to add at the same time as taking other things away.

i like how this keeps coming up, and there's only silence on the other end.

I really really want to shout from the rooftops what we're planning and show you the beautiful mock ups and prototypes and seriously crazy web development things I've learned over the past year that I just found out today have shifted my personality type from an ESFP to an ENTP. Crazy! But the problem is that until things are 100% locked, they can change (which sounds redundant). So we really can't say anything until it's locked in. This applies for any feature in a game or any announcement we make. We can't talk about it until we're ready. I don't ask that you trust that what we're doing is going to be good. Show, don't tell. If you choose to stick around when we reveal those things, I will let you be the judge of it.

Unrelated. I've never been a fan of distracting bad news with shiny things.

I wish your announcement had reflected this sentiment.  You tried to sell a diminishment of services as a positive thing that the community requested.

As others have said, just give it to us straight, please.

@ Mazder and others: This is currently a thread of discussing BSN Read Only Changes, not to discuss Bioware Devs or who was better or who wasn't. So, remain on Topic so that we can at least have some clarification on what they're going to do(if itsn't clear for some people) and discuss this topic or if they are going to add anything new....

Thanks!

This forum will reach synthesis, it is inevitable.

I'd say wait and see the full changes that Merizan is making but that would be sensible, so I say purge it all so we have an excuse to riot and cry.

I'd also like to applaud those defending Chris 'Was so good at his job he got fired' Priestly and Ninja 'I'm closing this multiplayer thread about geth prime stunlocks in multiplayer, because it has nothing to do multiplayer' Stan. Truly amusing!

Agree 100% with you... Hell, if those people don't like it, leave.

if you don't like it, what is exactly the point of being here? To Whine? To do what? See projects? See them, but don't post on Game/Off Topic Discussions, which will make you have a bad reputation as a simple WHINER!

Really, if you don't like BSN or its features, what exactly you're still doing here?

Oh, but what will become of my game? :(

I mean, we could still have a Off Topic Section if those were MORE Moderated. (Note, in MORE moderated, I meant more mods)

Also, a bit off topic here:

How do you become a Mod? Do you need to have worked at Bioware?

Chris, it sounds like you are saying the reason for removing this stuff is the whole old "toxic forums" issue, and that those bothered by the removal of one or more of these element are part of the problem. It just doesn't seem to be much of a "social network" when you strip features like the ability to make polls or upload and tag images. Compared to other aspects of the site how much space do DA:O mods and such take up anyway? I understand not confirming any of these "new features" until plans are finalized but of course the future of the site looks bad when there is an announcement like this. Yeah Bioware wants new fans but does that mean driving out some of the old?

If anything the OT forum is well behaved compared to the rest of the forum, not to mention the now thankfully locked character and romance forum. Honestly the DA:I forum tends to contain more arguing about race or sexuality or people projecting their IRL views on the templar/mage issue than anything related to gameplay or story.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that I do like the BSN and its features. And this seems like a change to the worse to me. Because you're taking away features that I like about the BSN. So I'm complaining about the features that I like about the BSN being taken away.

That makes me a whiner that needs to go away, doesn't it.

Even worse, she's not distracting bad news with shiny things.

She's distracting bad news with the promise of shiny things. Oh the irony!

Yep, getting rid of things like polls and the off-topic section would definitely help reduce the nastiness on BSN. I mean, just look at how much fighting and name-calling go on in them compared to the haven of politeness and respect that is the DA:I forum.

What I don't get is that YOU want to have this community based on game discussion but you remove the project feature which is probably one of the most welcoming places on this website. I really don't get that logic as the project area was not malicious in any sense.

As far as my opinion, I mostly use the forums and groups. As long as groups aren't getting axed at some point, I'm fine. I know others are unhappy, though, and I feel bad for them.

As it stands this is my stance aswell.
I use the Nexus for my modding needs.
Have been using it for years.
And I never did use projects, albums, polls or blogs.

I'd like to know some more details, actual concrete details, on what the site will look like and what you guys are gonna do to it the new stuff and the like, not just ideals what yer striving for. Make an introductory video before bigger changes. Might make things easier to roll over.

If I remember corerectly, mods and gallerys took up HUGE amounts of space. Think of it this way, everyone who bought a copy of DAO since launch, think millions of copies, could upload an almost unlimited amount of images and start an unlimited amount of mods. I think you're underestimating the amount that gets uploaded in 5 years.

I think you missinterpreted my line of tought. What I meant was if you don't like it and keep Posting Threads, like "Waaah, I don't like BSN, I'm gonna cry for what Bioware did/didn't do to me, I'm gonna leave because BSN Changed, etc, etc, etc" ,  then you're a whiner that is actually WANTING attention from other people.

I can say that if my game gets locked, for example, that I actually going to leave the forums (and maybe do a thread about it, since I have friends, ya know, ROFL) for a couple of time, because(IMO) there won't be another thing to do, since the other part of the forums don't interest me big, until the next ME Comes out or when I beat DA:O and DA:I since this place will surely be full of spoilers.

You're giving your feedback, not whining.

Edit: Fixed Typo

You would have been better off if you placed a system that monitors for inactivity or one of the spam filter frameworks available. That would have saved you greatly. A quick glance at the at the gallary shows a lot of unused images. There is also the idea of users who log in for the first time and never use the account again. Why not give them a grace peroid before allocating their resources? There is also the amount of spam in the blogs which would probably save you if you had to do a clean up.
