Now. Everytime I read of Duncan in my codex or hear of him he is mentioned as my "mentor". He is supposed to be like a second father for me. But why? I don't even know him, nor does he know me! I first met him in (enter area here), at the same day he told me that I will become a grey warden. Alright. The next thing we do, is travel. We don't see anything of the traveling and don't travel that long, he wants to get to Ostagar quickly. In Ostagar, I see him one day, merely just to get quests. The following night he presumably died.
So, where the hell did he act as my mentor? My fatherfigure? I always read of him as my mentor, my friend and all that, but I don't even know him really! Maybe we became friends/whatever when we traveled to Ostagar, but I don't have the impression that something important happened there. I think this part of the story would have needed more depth. This way, his "death" is sad, but not really touching for me. It's just another hero dead, big deal, this happens far too often, but I didn't really know that man.
Anyone approve?
My mentor Duncan.

Yeah I understand what your saying and quite agree. I think at least adding a few quests and travelling cutscenes with him would have made me feel a little better about it all or worse depending on how your looking at it

Yep - my characters might see Duncan in a positive or negative light depending on their origin and how I imagine them (personality, motivation, etc). But none of them feel close to Duncan, he is certainly not a mentor/teacher.
Duncan is known and respected by some people some of my characters do know - the Keeper in my Dalish clan; my father in the human noble origin; etc - but he is a closed book to me. Even if the journey took months, we see nothing of it. He is definitely Alistair's mentor - but not mine.

I didn't even like the guy. It's not as though he saved my father just prolonged his suffering. Me and mom could have fought our way out without his help travelled to Ostegar and hooked up with my brother. Then with Loghain desperate for allies we could have done a deal and no need for me to end up a GW.

The way the long travel is skipped over in three seconds cutscene wastes a lot of potential for 1) bonding more with Duncan and developing his character and 2) learning about the darkspawn and the Grey Wardens. I like the guy, but the way it is handled is quite jarring and really doesn't give you much of a connection with him.

It is a bit odd how travelling isn't represented very well in time relation. Depending on where you start from would change the length of travel but from the conversation between Duncan and the King I would think there was a stop in Redcliff, for some that would be out of the way, unless he saw the Arl in denerim which I don't think is the case. I suppose it's possible he went there before picking up the hero too. *shrugs*

I think he saw Eamon before getting the pc. But yes - even if the cutscene only mentioned that you and Duncan grew close during the weeks of travel or something it would help. Not be sufficient really, but an improvement. Or when you arrive, if you could go and talk to him about things, and the conversation referred to your travels and how your relationship had grown during that time (or not, depending on your persuasion or choices, perhaps).
