I consider 'dude' to be a gender-neutral term. When someone says, "Hey guys" no one says, "Well excuse me, but I don't have ding dang, actually I have a sniz natch".

First person 'dude' feels fine, but I feel that third person 'dude' implies that the 'dude' is such. 

"Dude, nice headshot!"
"That dude hugged a Banshee!"

Unless you say 'dudes' which is sort of like saying 'hey guys' ... although in truth you are in fact explicity excluding all of the women by saying 'guys', and subsequently implying that women are kind of a subset of that group.  But I'll stop here and keep it on topic.

I never have in ME3.  Though playing on PC, it is harder to send random people messages, plus my name on Origin is the same here.  The "boy" part kinda gives it away.  Though half the time my geth trooper does sport hot pink armor highlights.

However, there were a few times in FFXI (a mmo) where people thought I was a girl.  My characer was named "Corrin" and even though it was a male hume, that name is apparently unisex and people thought I was girl playing a male character.  (I took the name from Dune btw if you were curious.)
