Not in ME3. I usually played male toon anyway and people tend to be rather quiet on pc (and message spam is out of the question). I had one rather awkward moment in SWTOR though while playing my female bounty hunter... No, it was not rp stuff.

I have to say there been quite a few interesting responses.

I do wonder if people have pre-conceptions about the world and therefore who they are playing on online with e.g. a 14 year boy on Xbox assumes they are playing with other 14 year boys. I suppose it’s more interesting when these views are challenged and for some people they get upset about this and go into a denial.

Maybe that explains why there are some absurd statements made such as “No girls on the internet” or “It's a well known fact that Girl = guy in real life.”.

I think they're just joking though. Nobody who has been on the BSN for some time can believe that female gamers are that scarce.

I hope that's the case, but you can never be sure how much people deny reality. Next time I see that statement I'll ask if the person saying it is joking or not.

So they could be ironic? I don't remember having any conversations like this:

Player 1: What's you name?
Me: It's bob.
Player 1: Bob, that's a funny name for a girl?
Me: Emmm....it's short for Kate.
Player 2: You have quite a deep voice Kate.
Me: I have a bit of a cold (said unconvincingly) :?
Player 3: We all know boys don't play ME3.
Player 1: Nice to meet you Kate
Player 2: Hi Kate

Only on PS3. I've noticed more girls on there than on Xbox. Image IPB

But, yeah; sorry that you had a bad experience, OP. There are plenty of idiots out there - just ignore them!

I won't go into the whole sexist thing about who earns the bacon and who makes the bread. The fact is that there are female gamers around - shock and horror - just like shock and horror that males have won Masterchef even though women were supposed to be assigned to the kitchen in the olden days.

Please, we're over all that.

I've been called all manner of things when people have never even heard my voice or know what I look like.

It's just a game and it's just online. Forget other people; just be yourself Image IPB

I think that a part of it is down to some males being frightened to be matched or even outdone by female gamers (and vice-versa).

In the girly world; girls playing games can be a big no-no! Likewise there are males out there who don't like video games, and they're picked-on.

The world, unfortunately, is stereotypical and biased. We're coerced to do things by the media around us.

Everyone should be allowed to be themselves and do what they want; regardless of gender, religion, sexuality etc. Stereotypes are oppressive.

The sad thing is I run into that attitude a lot (in PvP games though) and I also run into the guys who are like "hey look there's the girl, let's go easy on her and make sure she haves fun," because everyone letting me win is totally not insulting or anything.  I used to have a less gender-neutral user name in other games. Thankfully I've never encountered that on ME3.

Yep, unfortunately I'd expect that mindset in PvP games - particularly games like CoD, GTA, Killzone, Battlefront etc etc.

Even though female gamers have a better time of it now than in the past, there's still a lot of competition around. Personally I find the gender vs gender and sexuality vs sexuality thing ridiculous.

I see what you mean though. My dad is from the generation where they think it's polite and proper to hold a door open for a female (chivalry and all that jazz). Some females may well find that nice. Personally I find it annoying and condescending. I hold the door open for anyone I come across - child, adult, elderly person (male, female, whatever - anyone).

We're all on gaming forums in the first place because we're interested in games; it doesn't matter where we come from, what colour we are, what gender/sex/label - what have you - we are/are interested in. Whoever and whatever we are; we're here because we have mutual interests. That should be enough.

It shouldn't be about who's better than who. These days, people are too preoccupied with themselves. One of the reasons I actually invested in ME3 MP compared to other multiplayer games was because this was a co-op game. Team-work is essential to the overrall grand scheme of things; it's important. There won't be a future without cooperation.

I have never been asked if I was a girl because I played a female character.

I have been asked if I was a girl after speaking, which never fails to make me facepalm.

My favorite question was "Are you a girl or a prepubescent boy?"

The answer should always be, "Which would you prefer?"

Austere I must say I find your comments (not just these) enlightening and insightful. I have taken a slightly different perspective by looking at the past. My impression in the past was that your background decided what you were allowed to do, so if you were from a “working” class background you had no chance of obtaining a professional job, regardless of your abilities. There were social expectations of what you were allowed to do. I see this today just manifesting itself in a different way. There are numerous BSN threads where someone has expressed surprise/shock that the OP of the thread, who is clearly good at ME3, happens to be female.

There are some positive media examples. There’s a series called “The Big Bang Theory” where the character Penny happens to be good at Halo and paint balling, and is appreciated for being so.

But would that be true of ME3? The urban legend is that male gamers pretend to be female gamers in order to get gear and upgrades out of gullible male gamers. However, there’s no exchange of gear system in place for ME3. So why do it?

Actually you might be touching on a slightly different topic where you are being deliberately misled by other gamers. Which is awful in my view, but then again there was the thread about the male gamer who got mistaken as a female gamer and didn’t want to upset his new friends.  So maybe it’s not so clear cut.

The poster you are addressing is well-known for liking to rustle people's jimmies, so I would take his "contributions" to this thread with a grain of salt.

Just as an FYI.

Also, his N7 is over 56,000. Can't let that go without a mention in every possible thread ever.
