I think that a part of it is down to some males being frightened to be matched or even outdone by female gamers (and vice-versa).
The sad thing is I run into that attitude a lot (in PvP games though) and I also run into the guys who are like "hey look there's the girl, let's go easy on her and make sure she haves fun," because everyone letting me win is totally not insulting or anything. I used to have a less gender-neutral user name in other games. Thankfully I've never encountered that on ME3.
Yep, unfortunately I'd expect that mindset in PvP games - particularly games like CoD, GTA, Killzone, Battlefront etc etc.
Even though female gamers have a better time of it now than in the past, there's still a lot of competition around. Personally I find the gender vs gender and sexuality vs sexuality thing ridiculous.
I see what you mean though. My dad is from the generation where they think it's polite and proper to hold a door open for a female (chivalry and all that jazz). Some females may well find that nice. Personally I find it annoying and condescending. I hold the door open for anyone I come across - child, adult, elderly person (male, female, whatever - anyone).
We're all on gaming forums in the first place because we're interested in games; it doesn't matter where we come from, what colour we are, what gender/sex/label - what have you - we are/are interested in. Whoever and whatever we are; we're here because we have mutual interests. That should be enough.
It shouldn't be about who's better than who. These days, people are too preoccupied with themselves. One of the reasons I actually invested in ME3 MP compared to other multiplayer games was because this was a co-op game. Team-work is essential to the overrall grand scheme of things; it's important. There won't be a future without cooperation.
