I've made a me, a black character, an asian and a latino.

If you can't make a character of "x" gender, then you are doing it wrong.

Either you're on pc with mods or did not really make a black person, latino or asin. There aren't enough options to do it, trust me, I've tried and my profile pic is the closes I got. He looks good, but good enough.

Nope, on the 360. No mods and made them to my liking, as I know a lot of latino and black folks.

You are doing it wrong. ^_^

I'm going to have to agree that it is possible to make somewhat convincing black and latino characters. I was able to do so. You just have to have a good aesthetic sense.  More CC options in DA:I will be welcome of course.

Meh, I just don't ffind stereotypical African features attractive. Prefer finer featured pale skinned women. Not attracted to men either, doesn't mean I hate them or people that do find them attractive. Paleskinned redheads with Celtic features like Karen Gillan or Christina Hendricks however are to die for. Also quite like Alexandra Moen.

I will agree with this. Never a bad thing to have more options...as long as it's viable for the devs, of course.

I had no idea Alexandra Moen was such a popular thread derailer.

One for each of her twinkly blues.

If you can't create a black character in the character creator then you're lacking in creativity. Giving elves beards on the other hand is a very serious issue that needs resolution.

Uh oh, Xand doesn't find African people attractive. Someone get a rope! He must be punished for his heresy.

To be fair it depends what kind, because there's lots of different types of "blacks" as there are with "whites". The finer featured women from Ethiopia are remarkably attractive and look somewhat like Indians, who I also find attractive. I'm utterly ambivalent to Asians. Got to looking up "hybrid" West Africans too and they can be pretty attractive too. Variety is the spice of life and we all have our preferences. No need to penalise those with different preferences.

Some of the Rivaini are black.

They are said to have skin tones that range from tan to ebony. Isabela and Duncan just happened to be of the tan variety. Also the new companion Vivienne is a black woman. Her origins are unknown, but given the already established lore on Rivain, its been speculated that she might have either full or partial Rivaini ancestry.

At any rate, black people exist in Thedas.

Source on there being blacks in Rivain? They're based on Spain so would look either Moorish or Spanish, so that explains the varying skin shades. You get a lot of pretty dark skinned Moors.

And *is* Vivienne black? She looks Rivaini to me, like Isabella.

The source is David Gaider:

"There are indeed black people in Thedas-- the Rivaini have skin tones ranging from dark tan to ebony."

As for
 Vivienne, she is clearly black.

I do agree that Vivienne looks Rivaini however. Posted Image

It is a scientifically proven fact that beards make a man better, in just about every conceivable way.

Oh I was just rambling. I'm all for letting someone create a black person in the CC, and I'm pretty sure you can already. Still think it would look rather odd being the only black guy in Thedas but hey ho.

I dunno, when he said that he said that there were ebony people and that just makes me think of a particularly dark skinned Berber.

Vivienne looks like a particular Jedi called Shaak Ti.

See, statistically speaking we all of us prefer one of those over the other two. I like the one on the left personally because redhead and pale and/or bigger bewbies.

Except the PC wouldn't be the only black person in Thedas, because some Rivaini are black.

Sure, if you ignore the first part of his statement where he said "There are indeed black people in Thedas."
It really does not get any more clear cut than that.

As for ebony skin tones, Caucasian people do not have that skin tone naturally. If they do, it is because they are of mixed ancestry. The dark-skinned Berbers are dark-skinned because they have partial sub-Saharan African ancestry. In other words, they're black.

Depends what your definition of "black" is. Indians can have dark enough skin to count as black.

Ignoring the profile pic, I would like to have more features as well. It was easier to create and black PC with Mass Effects CC screen. They could easily bring some of that over to DA, especially with the new engine.

I made a decent black male and female PC in Origins, but I just gave up in DA:2. Even if you made something that looked half way decent, the voice just ruined it all. Once I hear the voice in DA:I I'll decide if it's even worth trying,

Sure. As can the people of New Guinea or Australian aboriginals.

The point is that not everyone in Thedas is lily-white, and some of the Rivaini at least have 'ebony' skin tones. In other words, there is absolutely no justification for anyone arguing that a dark-skinned player character somehow violates the lore. At best people making those arguments are just dead wrong about the lore, and at worst, they're motivated by racism.

Regardless, it was a badly worded statement.  There was absolutely no need to write it at all, much less to phrase it in such a backhanded way.  Even if it wasn't overtly racist, surely you could figure out that in the context of the fact that black have have historically been dismissed by whites as incapable of being attractive, it would sound very, very wrong.

Absolutely nothing. Furthermore the assumption that all people with ebony skin or darker are all supposed to be jammed in a jar with stereotypical "African" description' s is a little exacerbating. Someone says European features as though it describes something distinct..as if a Polishman and a Italian look the same. A more expansive Character Creator is being implemented so I'm happy. Can't wait till the game comes out.

I think FreshIstay kind of summed up my thoughts on the matter when he said this;

Because there are a great deal of different types of dark skinned people and they don't all look like stereotypical Africans. That said I still think there aren't any "proper" African peoples in Thedas that we know of yet and if there are then it needs to be fleshed out more to make it more plausible. No reason why you can't create a black character in the character creator however. If I was black I'd want the option to create myself. All the more power to me if I was the only black guy in Thedas, which would amuse me no end.

Yes yes, you're very sensitive. Unfortunately not all of us are so immersed in racism that we spend all our time worrying about what others think and how they can be offended. I see everyone as more or less equal and treat them how I'd treat myself.
