On my xbox profile, it said "I'm a simple Asian girl who likes to take pictures of food at restaurants." I had this typed in as a joke, because I was waiting tables in a very international city (Seattle) and there are TONS of Asians who come in and take excessive amounts of pictures of their food... sometimes 4 or 5 minutes will go by and their food is getting cold and they'd still be snapping away.
As time went by, I got an unusual amount of messages about how great a player I was. I thought this interesting, not because I'm a good player (I was told that I was better than I really was at the time, I'm sure), but I think because people assumed that I was an attractive Asian woman. I don't have an XBOX keyboard and had to type with the controller and on-screen keyboard, and didn't want to keep telling random people that I was actually a white male, every single time, so I just ignored that fact. But, as time went by, I started making friends with groups of people, including a set of Korean players. I actually had to ask my gf what the hell people were sending me because I don't speak Korean.
As time went on, several groups of friends urged me to get a headset, as mine was broken (mic didn't work) so I did, but I was afraid to have to backtrack and tell everyone that I was actually not a girl who was playing, and that my online friendships were based in a non-reality world where these people thought that I was an Asian girl. I started up the headset, and told everyone that I was her boyfriend, and lessened my playing skills so that they'd think I was learning from her. I did get the occaisional "hey go put your girlfriend on so we can play platinum" type of messages and I'd have her speak into the mic (I had to coach her on some of the lingo of the game) and I'd play with my full skillset. It turned into a big, giant, mess.
Since most of my friends no longer play the game, and I don't see them on the forums much anymore (I do think Stickman might have met me when I was "pretending" to be a girl still), I decided to come clean! I never meant to trick anyone - it was all because I had a funny XBOX profile signature about being an Asian girl, and then not wanting to have to type on screen to random people (some ending up being friends) that I'm actually a white guy, and that I'm having to live a lie on XBOX live because I got to know some people well enough and had to keep up making them think that I was a girl, and slowly transition to telling them that she no longer plays and that I (the boyfriend) is now transitioning to the player known as "eighteighty"
