Hi - i used to know how to do this but ive been away for a while from modding

i am trying to use the black cat texture to make an alternate c_cat texture whilst keeping the original

all i have tried so far is to make an mdb with the new textures

then make an appearance using the the new mdb in the model body column in appearance.2da

its not working

the new mdb shows in model viewer

and black cat shows up in the appearance tab

but when i apply the new appearance it comes up invisible

any tips anyone?

thanks :)

I have no idea, but I want to say something. You were always one to give me help and advises when you were not in a project, and now that you got to work on the toolset again you ask help yourself.
It just shows me that toolset is like a bike, but there are always new stuff to learn or forget B)

you don't need to do this. just clone the cat model (c_cat_cl_body01.mdb), link the new textures and resave the model as c_cat_cl_body02. afterwards you can select the new appearance through the armor set tab - it's the second cloth variation, hence the *cl_body02.

why your alternate appearance doesn't work is hard to say without knowing your model or the 2da.

That has happened to me (invisible models) when some parts in the new model (like a RIGD component) have the same name as parts in an already existing model. IIRC, it happened once when I had duplicate rows (the same row number) in the 2da file. There might be other causes.

Thanks Semper - i actually remembered the naming convention - but not the TS ability to recognise the alternate textures.

Hopefully I will have both versions in a few minutes.

I will update shortly B)

Semper - that is just awesome!

So many possibilities now...

And this method will work for virtually any re-skinning of a creature?

as long as you keep the naming conventions intact you're free to do whatever you want. it's a clever way to add different appearances without touching a single 2da, plus it's very easy to handle ;)

Yes, it is.

I hope every new builder sees this - its just too convenient.

Another option would be to alter the tint texture (something I've already done for myself). That way untinted cats (such as familiars) look the same as ever.

The challenge then is to match the tints of the spots/stripes and underbelly so they disappear against the rest of the background to make a solid coloured cat. It takes a bit of fiddling with the colour values, since the underlying texture colours aren't all the same. That's how the standard leopard model in the game is used as a black panther.

To do the job properly, you'd create a pure white cat and use the tint map to define the main body, spots/stripes, and underbelly colours all from scratch. That would give you a much wider range of tinting options, with no chance of colour mismatches (all underlying texture colours are the same), but then all existing untinted cats in the game would turn white.
