I have been trying for two moons to get into the city of Elven Alienage, but to no avail. I have knocked several many times.  I even identified myself to the guard as Elvis (or was it Alvin?), he just won't let me enter.

The Denerim alienage? You won't get there until almost at the end of the game. It is unmissable, though, as it is one of the main quest locations.
