Tell me that I will need Sten to complete any of the major quest. Reason is I do not have him and when I went back to get him Lothering had been nuked.

You won't need Sten to complete any major quest - he does have a minor quest associated with him, but it's completely non-essential.
I don't think the game would allow you to miss any character that was essential to the progression of the story.
So don't worry about missing Sten - you'll have him for your second playthrough.
