And the plan post-destroy? Just don't make any more synthetics.

Probably completely impossible in the Mass Effect universe. All we can do is hope that things were dealt with well enough (if picking Destroy, literal view) that people now know how to properly deal with AI
(kill em all Javik style and without Reapers stopping that process, or design them entirely as tools but with greater knowledge of how they work and kill em instantly otherwise, or working with them an immediately treat them as life worth respecting from the start - all are ways that would work differently than before, without the Reapers doing their Cycles).

Also, it seems to me that VIs can evolve into AIs in the Mass Effect universe. Didn't the geth start as VIs? And given that the malfunctioning VI on the lunar base tries to signal for help, and later is salvaged and developed into EDI, it seemed to have taken at least a step towards becoming an AI.

People might be convinced not to create more AIs after the war. But no more VIs? That seems about as likely as our current society swearing off computers.

Yep! The theme itself is perfectly fine in Mass Effect imo  - it is only the 'Catalyst's' presentation of it, in the tone of an arrogant brat, that resulted in a collective: WTF

I think the ending would have worked better if the Catalyst wasn't involved with the Reapers at all, like it was just some random AI or something else (a 'being of light' perhaps?). And it basically explains that the Reapers are the pinnacle of Synthetic life (or whatever) and their presense threatens the existence of Organics (the Reapers goals would still be unknowable, it wouldn't matter either because the important part would be that they are killing Organics). It would then go on to explain that the Crucible can finally defeat them and then give you the three options.

It might even explain Liara's vision, you saw a Being of Light!

At the end Liara offers you the opportunity to join her mentally and this ends with you staring together into a white light.   First run through this actually affected my choice because I thought that perhaps it was a nod towards the synthesis option because of the white light and this was why I deviated from my gut instinct which was to go for destroy.
Did the white light have any relevance for you?   Do you think it was a deliberate attempt by the writers to confuse you?   Otherwise I couldn't really see the point of this, particularly if Shepard is not in a relationship with her.    It would have made more sense to get a series of flashbacks of all the events they had been involved in together which had led to that point.  So what did this vision mean to you?

Quite honestly, Liara's shared vision made me think of rebirth. But it never occured to me that rebirth would occur that was not on Shepards terms.

The white light? @OP My character was in a relationship with her. The white light had no relevance except for more of the same that I got from that entire set of dialogue with all the characters: "You gonna die." Which was absolutely confirmed by Anderson's idiot battle plan. "Shepard, we need you to get to the beam. I'm sending you up the middle where the resistance is the heaviest."

Shepard (pulls out pistol and shoots Anderson): "Okay here's the plan. I need to get to the beam. Wrex, you lead your unit and the Turians up the middle where the resistance is the heaviest. You're going to get pounded, but I know you're Krogan and you guys can take it. Don't let up. I need you to keep them occupied. Meanwhile, my team will slip around the back and go up the beam."

If that was the case then we could have won easily by strapping krogan (who have to be impervious to bombardment by an entire reaper fleet according to your plan) to our ships' armour.

No, Krogan die in a vacuum. You want the material of the cliff on Rannoch that was behind Shepard during the Reaper fight for that. Now that material was impervious to bombardment.

See, in trying to be snarky, you forgot about that detail. :P

No what you need are the materials form some of those crates they used on Horizon in ME2.  Those will protect you from the blast from a Cain!  A few inches of that material can probably protect a ship fro a Reaper's main gun :P

So basically your plan is this...
