Sten is definitely a samurai. I would speculate that Yukio Mishima inspired somehow Sten's personality. And his painting addiction have lot in common with medieval japan...

Cookies on the other hands...

I heard it's supposed to be something of a Militaristic Buddishm, or something like that. So most likely very japanese-ish with sprinkles of other Asian countries.

I wouldn't know if I'd say he's Samurai, in fact if you were going to make that comparison you'd have to say he's Ronin.

I don't know aobut the Qunari culture enough to say it's old Japan, maybe I can find some infor on it though since when I asked him he just said "NO" lol

I think you'll find that noblilty in Asian countries value caligraphy & not painting. All though writing in medieval Asia was done with a brush. Thedas is Medieval Europe. So Darked skinned neighbour would've been Middle East or Africa.

Only real flaw in that logic is that DG has already stated that the dark skinned cultures come from the far north, not the south. So you can't fairly compare them to how our globe is laid out or any of our ancient cultures and times.

I always figured that the culture that produced Sten was loosely based on medieval Japan. None of the parallels we see in the game are 100%, I think the real history is just used as inspiration. And Sten did seem to have been raised in a way that reminded me of Bushido.

It certainly struck me that there are similarities (believing in the sword as being part of one's soul, for instance). Doesn't mean it's a direct expatriation, however.

I don't agree.  "The way of the Qun?" sounds really like Bushido. Also check Hokusai http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokusai and many other japanese artists.
And Yukio Mishima was a writer and a poet, and a samurai. So the connection between being a samurai and loving art is definitely there.

They've choosen a dark skinned character just to not make an obvious asian character, and to spice up things, but is way of life resembles more the asian culture than the middle eastern or the african one. Also Thedas have something in common with medieval europe, it's not exactly medieval europe (otherwise you wouldn't explain that through the east there's an ocean).

Well I think they did that on purpose. Fereldan is based on medieval England which is northen Europe, yet Orlai which is based on France & Antiva which is based on Latin Europe is both further north of Fereldan. So I see no real flaw in the logic at all. Afterall mediterranean sea is what divides Europe & Other Continents near Latin Europe

Edit: His hairstyle definetly not japanese.

Well Thedas=Europe. Europe=Bounds of Roman Empire. Tevinter=Ancient Rome. I think the Qunari are closer to maybe the Ottomans or the Turks if you like.

The dwarves reminded me more of the Japanese, actually, than the Qunari. Insistence on honor, but, and only excepting a few, use it only as an excuse to stab each other in the back as they try to put their 'clan' above that of others. (i.e., honor for sake of appearance)

'Bushido' is an ideal...and as with many ideals, I don't think it was commonly adhered to and only 'referenced' when it suited the needs of a group or individual.

The Qunari? Hmm. Yeah. Something like a militant 'contemplative' sect (the way Sten intro'd the Qun reminded me of the Tao. Heh. And there were, I think, militant Taoists...heck, I practice two 'taoist', or so they claim, martial arts) that's also very structured (what w/ the caste system they apparently have...would that make them pseudo Hindu?).

Tho', as someone who watches Stargate, Sten/Qunari really reminded me of the Jaffa (or maybe the Sodan), first and foremost. :D

It's on the southern hemisphere, so why not?

Yes, but the way the Qunari treat women is definetly more Middle eastern culture than Asian culture. Some Asian Noble women in History were infact tought the way of the warrior.

Ok I've only played the game and not read the books so I have no way of knowing this. So I apologize.

Do we really know how Qunari treat their women? We have yet to see one, so the no-warrior thing might have merit if they are three feet tall and get from point A to B by rolling.

Well he does mention in a dialogue between the PC, if you play a female character that in Qunari culture women should only be artisans so forth & not fight.

But they are chosen after what they do best and then are what they do. If the males have a slight advantage physically, then the warriors are male.

Not in Qunari Culture. He does not see you as a female once you tell him your are going to keep fighting.

Qunari reference to Ottoman and Seljuk turks in real life.

In my opinion most of Qunari are stoic and have strong code of honor(probably very much alike Samurai)

Because warrior there implies male probably. You make it sound as if the Qunari oppress their women or something.

The Qunari strike me more like the Ottoman empire. Sten's more a Jannissary than a Samurai in my opinion. I guess that makes Tevinter = Byzantium.
