You will forgive me for thinking that this is all anyone really cares about when nearly any all fan related content regarding them (whether it be mere talk about the characters they are going to create or other things like comic strips) focuses pretty much solely on this factor.

I mean before they were announced as playable everyone was all like "oh no I don't find Female Qunari attractive, I just think it would be an interesting viewpoint to explore" and now that we get them everyone is all like "Allright! Im gonna create a female Qunari with a midget fetish!".

Also what is the go with that Kossith crap? I remember there was a rumour floating around that Qunari could be officially renamed Kossith due to the amount of people misusing the term, has this happened or has it been officially denied?

Uh, who said that female Qunari weren't attractive? There was artwork for DAII featuring a female Qunari and I don't recall anyone saying she was ugly.

Well, for some unknown reason Gaider hasn't come up with a name for the grey horns yet(the qunari giant race). If he did, he doesn't want to reveal it. Some people find it problamatic, others find it annoying.

Yes, it has been denied, but Kossith will be what I will be calling them, until there's an official name for that race.

I don't know, why not just play an female Qunari interested in male Qunaris? I'm only going to play as an female Qunari warrior so I can mock members of the Qun, Heh.

And for what I know Kossith it's just an old name of their culture before it became the Qun. Something the devs seem to regret because it only caused confusion between the fans.

Nope, qunari are still called qunari. The rumour was false.
As for me, I couldn't care less who the female qunari can romance. I'm interested in playing as one and see how the world reacts to this choice.

I think it's just going to stay qunari.

I haven't seen any people mentioning a midget fetish.

Their name has always been Qunari, the Qunari themselves haven't given the race a name but the people of Thedas have and that name is Qunari.

The rumour I am speaking of is a theory based on a twitter exchange between Laidlaw and Gaider where Gaider called them Qunari and Laidlaw replied "Don't you mean Kossith?". Of course this could be just Laidlaw teasing Gaider because Gaider has publicly stated his annoyance at the misuse of the term or it could be something Gaider just didn't want revealed yet.

1. As someone who took part in female Qunari discussions, no one ever said that they weren't attractive, but everyone instead chose to focus on other aspects of them and to give Gaider other reasons to consider one for an LI other than a "fetish"(let's not open that can of worms back up)

2. Who everyone? I'M certaintly not saying that and I haven't seen anyone else who plans on playing a female qunari say that. Or are you implying that because a female qunari would be taller than every other race, that that would make any human/elf LI a  "midget fetish"?

3. Devs did mention Kossith in an exchange that fans caught wind of, but it was never planned to replace Qunari. Kossith is an archaic term to describe the pre-Qun Qunari(when they weren't qunari). Next to nobody in Thedas knows the term and those who do would not use it as a name for the Qunari. Fans use it in discussions to differentiate between Qunari(grey giants who follow the Qun) and the race of grey giants. Gaider has come out multiple times to say that the use of the term is "wrong" but if fans insist on using it, they can.

And others find it great. I love that we have a group of people here that care so little for their exterior charactaristics that they never gave themselves a term to be referred to.

I don't see what's so bad about just calling them Qunari. Lot of real world peoples and their respective names have even more bizarre origins than their religion. The literal meaning behind the French, Scots, Saxons and Welsh for example are "throwing axes", "raiders", "short swords" and "strangers".

Although technically the Qun is more a militant atheist philosophy than a religion.

It could still be an interchangeable term, meaning it could be used to refer to the race and followers of it. All depends upon the context. The term Scot ended up being used for everyone in Scotland, despite the Gaelic Scots only being one of three peoples, the other two being Picts and Britons.

Kossith was the culture of the qunari before Koslun wrote the Qun. Not the name of the race.

I say qunari when I want to refer to the race, as I would refer to an elf or dwarf. I say Qunari when I want to talk about a follower of the Qun.

The problem is when you want to talk about the qunari(as a race) as opposed to the Qunari(as those who follow the Qun) and while I agree with Gaider that the context can usually sort out what you mean, that doesn't stop people from purposesly mixing up the terms and talking about Qunari when you mean qunari or newer people who don't know the difference being confused.

I still say using the term "Qunari" for both the philosophy/religion and members of the biological race of horned giants is highly ineffective. When the devs announced Qunari as a playable race, the forums exploded with people asking to clarify if they meant just the grey giants (Val'Vashoth) or also followers of the Qun like Sten. It's also a pain to have to clarify if you mean just follower of the Qun regardless of race, grey giant that follows the Qun, grey giant that doesn't follow the Qun, or grey giant regardless of the Qun every single time we bring them up in the forums. The devs have not done anything to try to clear up the confusion, and in fact add to it when they shut down attempts to clear it up.

The people who use the term "kossith" are at least trying to find an easy way to differentiate between biological race regardless of ideology ("grey giant" or "kossith") and biological race with ideology (Qunari and Val'Vashoth). I'm all for getting rid of needless complications.

About female grey giants, love transcends height. If a female grey giant happens to fall for a companion, who cares about height difference? If said companion falls for her, who cares about height difference? I think it's extremely shallow to assume people can't care about each other just because of a height difference, and demeaning to assume it's only possible because of a "fetish."

Nah it's still Qunari and wasn't going to change and he did respond numerous times, there's this one right after Laidlaw said that on his Twitter.

In reference to the fact he's been trying to squash it on his tumblr for example there's this.

I’m well aware this is basically about some fans yearning for a proper, single-word label so they can argue about it online and write about it in fanfiction. Yet I’ve told you what words you can use— the ones we would use in-game and in-world— and still there are

“but what if—?!” exclamations, as if coming up with enough convoluted reasoning will make the issue seem really complex and untenable.

You don’t need a single word for the biological race. If you think you do, because you need a term for the big horned people who aren’t part of the Qun (and Tal’Vashoth just doesn’t cut it for you), then use “qunari” and add a ****ing adjective — assuming you’re not a scientist trying to classify their species, that should be something available to you.

Or use “kossith” incorrectly. I’m simply saying what we will use in Dragon Age and assuming that the in-game terminology is something people would like to know. If you don’t care about that and feel you need something additional, then by all means do so.

My only issue with it has ever been when some fans school other fans on the “proper” term (and, yes, this does happen) or when fans casually use the word as if that should be meaningful to most— and then blame the lore when it causes confusion.

http://dgaider.tumbl...s-where-it-gets

http://dgaider.tumbl...-i-hate-how-the

What I don't like is people referring to "Kossith" as if it's a term that everyone should know-- as opposed to something that's been barely mentioned in-game. People also use it incorrectly, using Kossith when what they actually mean is Tal-Vashoth.
It's also not a term the Qunari would use themselves. If you want to refer to the horned race, it's Qunari. Members of their religion who are not also part of the horned race are generally called Viddathari.

If you really want to say "Kossith", that's up to you-- we can hardly stop you, and I've no idea why you'd care about what we think-- but it's a little annoying when people roll out "Kossith" first, when everyone would know what they're talking about if they just said "Qunari"

... If you want to refer to the horned race, it's Qunari...

"Kossith" is an antiquated term, not a technical one. It was used to describe the culture that predated the Qun. It may not have even been the name of a race at all. It's the equivalent of calling white people, "Occidental." A few members of the Qunari priesthood are going to recognize the word, but no one else in Thedas would know what the heck this term means.

Modern Qunari do not have a term for their race for the same reason that nobody in Thedas has a name for their planet. As far as they are concerned, the world consists of people and things-that-aren't-people. All other distinctions are unimportant.

Other Thedosians do not draw distinctions between Those Tall Guys Who Sometimes Have Horns Who Follow the Qun and The Other Tall Guys who Sometimes Have Horns Who Don't.

They are all, "Qunari" to the humans, elves, and dwarves.

Mary Kirby
http://social.biowar...3267/3#14904924

Then sometime last month he said this.

The difficulty here is that the Qunari do not have a single word they use for their race. They have many words they use as identifiers. Overall it is simply "Qunari"-- which encompasses all followers of the Qun, which as far as they're concerned is everyone worth mentioning.

And as far as people in the rest of Thedas are concerned, that is their racial name.

If there's a need to separate the Qunari who aren't members of their race, and "viddathari" isn't considered useful, an adjective is added (like "elven Qunari"). For members of their race which aren't followers of the Qun, it's "Tal-Vashoth".

Is this confusing? To some people who like having a handy identifier it is, but the Qunari aren't really interested in arranging their names to make things convenient for other cultures. Their names are exact classifications, and are incredibly important to them-- even Sten doesn't tell you the name that he uses among the Qunari.

If you'll recall, he says that Sten is the name you may use because it'll be easier for you.

In that vein, if fans wish to use "kossith" as a racial identifier, you're free to do so. It's an old name for the Qunari, but one they no longer accept-- in-game, that is. So we'll never use it in the game, but if it makes it handier for you out of the game, by all means use it.

Since it's not something we mention in the game, however, don't be surprised if few people know what the heck you're talking about. As I've mentioned before, the only time I get irritated is when hardcore fans scold people on the "proper" use of the word when the only proper use is the in-world one-- or when particular pedantic fans moan about how the lack of a proper racial name is confusing (and thus an error in the lore) when that's exactly what it's designed to be.

http://social.biowar...ndex/17378184/3

Kossith isn't going to be used ever in game, and it's not even a racial identifier when in fact it was the name of the culture before they converted to the Qun, so i'm always puzzled when I keep seeing this term used.

Kabethari- All recent people who have been conquered but haven't been converted to the Qun

Viddathari- All non Big Grey Giants who have fully converted and submitted to the Qun

Vashoth- Non Violent Qunari(big grey giant) who broke the Qun

Tal'Vashoth- Violent ones who broke the Qun, typically they are former soldiers

Anyway we really don't know what their preference is but I doubt it's different than the rest of Thedas, though if they follow the Qun they can't show it.

We don't really know what the female Qunari will look like in game, since we've only seen one of them in the comics and in concept art.

As for when we'll see the race models as of September they said eventually which isn't really helpful.

Ahh, so Qunari is the actual name of the grey giants and Vaddathiri is the term for non-Qunari followers of the Qun.

Still not weirdest thread.

A sexual interest in tall, badass  warrior women is my only excuse.
I've not actually joined in on any of the chats though and I'm not sure if I'll get round to playing a Qunari though.
Being able to play one doesn't really matter to me one way or the other. Yet. I'll probably make one anyway after my first playthrough.

The female Kossith look pretty good I'll have to say. But when it comes to what gender I'll chose when I do a Kossith play through, it's gonna be male.

What is this thread about? The title and the content of the OP aren't really related....

Also what is the go with that Kossith crap? I remember there was a rumour floating around that Qunari could be officially renamed Kossith due to the amount of people misusing the term, has this happened or has it been officially denied?

Well, for some unknown reason Gaider hasn't come up with a name for the grey horns yet(the qunari giant race). If he did, he doesn't want to reveal it. Some people find it problamatic, others find it annoying.

Yes, it has been denied, but Kossith will be what I will be calling them, until there's an official name for that race.

There is an official name for that race: Kossith. The gray-skinned horned giants are called Kossith.

However, in game, nobody actually uses that term. They are known to all commoners as "Qunari" and because everyone just calls them that, it sticks. Qunari themselves see no reason to distinguish their own race; they are servants of the Qun only, and as such are called Qunari. Anything  Kossith that is not Qunari is beneath them and most likely not worth of a racial name, and are branded Tal-Vashoth.

So basically, nobody uses the word Kossith in lore, everybody knows them as "Qunari" only.
However IRL we know they're actually called Kossith.
