I find that every squad mate has something likable but my favs have to be: Wrex, Garrus, Tali, Legion and Thane, also if Aanderson counts due to being a squad mate for the first 5 minutes of ME3, put him in there as well

Favorite characters:
1. Harbinger. He's the epitomous big-daddy-boss-nass baddie, and he is so much fun to hate in Mass Effect 2; you really just get the feeling of wanting to beat this guy and win at all costs. Him having pretty much no role in ME3 is one of the biggest wastes of potential I have ever seen; it was an even bigger disappointment for me than the ending. And his voice... 'nuff said.
2. Garrus. The best wingman on the Citadel. He's like, as one of my favorite youtube comments said, a sexy alien batman. He's just the all around badass paragade who takes no crap and doesn't step down from a fight.
3. The Illusive Man. Harbinger's got my vote for best villain, but TIM comes a close second. I was disappointed that he goes from being the grey anti-hero to just a plain old bad guy; I feel like they could have used that grey theme around him more in ME3 if they'd played their cards right. But being foiled by Cerberus on Thessia and Mars gave me SOOO much hate for him, and the final confrontation on the Citadel was a great part as well.
4. Joker. One of the few whose stayed at your side for the entire series, save for Garrus, Anderson and Dr. Chakwas. Seth Green does a really good job for his voice, and he just totally fits into the pilot role, and is one you can always count on.
5. Admiral Anderson. I'm a sucker for mentor figures unless they're really terrible, but Anderson's really awesome. The old fart never gives up and still has some chops on him; the "I'm proud of you" scene was so heartbreaking.
Favorite romances:
1. Liara. My first, last and only choice for my Shepard. Feels like Bioware was always pushing you to go for Liara, and while she was pretty flat for dialogue in ME1, she becomes infinitely more awesome in ME3. Loved her then, love her even more now.
2. Thane. I love Thane because he turns the entire persona of Shepard around. If you romance him, Shepard's story turns into one of a strong, warrior woman, looking to die so she can see her beloved again. He's a strong, confident character that any Shepard could get behind in my book.
3. Jack. I actually had a girlfriend not unlike her; albeit without the sociopathic murder sprees. I like the feeling of someone having deep issues and fixing it through being with another person; cliche as hell, but its really sweet. Bioware pulled it off and I like Jack's romance.
4. Ashley. Despite all her hate, she changes a lot in ME3. She's stale in the first game, but if you romance her all the way through, some of her dialogue with Shepard, and how they communicate through poetry, is so touching and beautiful. I wish she'd actually talked more after she got on the Normandy in ME3; again, more wasted potential, but still, she's really sweet.
5. Garrus. Already went over him, but his awkwardness, which turns into confidence, is really cute. I'm a guy and I guess I kinda see that mirrored in myself, plus having him as a squadmate and a love interest makes for the perfect combo.
Honorable mentions:
Tali, Legion, EDI, Mordin & Wrex.

Was it ever in question that Miranda and Jacob were a thing?
Jacob does pretty much tell you this, it's the reason why I have never romanced Mranda to be honest. I see Jacob as a good mate and I don't date my mates ex girlfriends, it would just create a really awkward atmosphere.

Characters:
- Garrus: As another poster so eloquently put it, he is the ultimate bromance. My squad selection is typically "Garrus and........whoever else". Best buddy/companion in gaming. Period.
- Wrex: Always a fun coversation. It was cool to see the changes he goes through from disillusioned bounty-hunter in ME1 to leader of his people in ME3. His grand entrance in the Citadel DLC is just awesome.
- TIM: As others have stated, his turn toward over-the-top baddie in ME3 was a turn for the worse as a character, but still one of the most intriguing characters in the game. Also, Martin Sheen.
- Honorable Mention: Thane - possibly the biggest baddass in the series. Mordin - love the "caring & good-hearted, but will #$@& people up if they cross him or his" types. Also, his dialogue is some of the best in the series. Joker - comic relief at it's best. Could really put about 5 or 6 other characters here as well.
Romances:
- Jack: Taking the time to break through her tough (psychotic) shell to find the real her is so worth it. Definitely needed more from her in ME3.
- Tali: Her LI dialogue, especially late in ME3 is about the most touching in the series.
That's about it on the LI side. The ME1 romance for Ash is nothing to write home about. Neither is **ducks** Liara, in any of the games - too shallow in ME1, too non-existant in ME2, and too depressed in ME3. Believe me, I tried to get into a "Liara as LI" trilogy run, but in the end it left me wanting more.
ETA: I guess I should point out that I haven't done many of the romances, such as Miranda, or Ash in ME2/3, or any of the guys.

Take a look at the "What would you change about..." and "Who would intimidatr who?" discussions. One thread had people crying about Jack & Miranda, the other degraded into feminism and ATTENTION****7204 debates. I'm all for an actual C & R thread.trenq wrote...

Kaidan is my favorite squad member and romance. His powers are pretty darn nifty in 1 and 3 and his romance arc is spot on if you ask me, and since there is this thread..you did!
I love Garrus' romance too, I actually think his is the best of the triology for fem shep and he is always 100% there for Shepard regardless of romance.
I know Liara gets a lot of hate but I really like her. She is always best friends with my Shepard.

Wrex- I'm far too alone when preferring him to Garrus. My main guy to go on missions with in ME1...my one disappointment of ME2 when I realized he wasn't coming with me.
Grunt- but then at least I got Grunt. A worthy replacement. Krogans are my spirit animal.
Joker- grew on me...especially in 2.
Anderson - felt like the father I didn't have...to my Earth born shep.
Javik- he's no krogan, but I thoroughly enjoyed his character.
Legion- at least in ME2.
HM: Thane, Mordin and Garrus.
Romance:
Jack: The one that felt right for (my) Shep. She was everything he needed and He was exactly what she needed. I wasn't even planning on romancing her...Miranda was supposed to be my main LI, but Jack won me over on her LM.

Wasn't around for the Romance board meltdown, and while some small part of me would like to see the "some men just want to watch the world burn" meme come to life again, let's hope not as I rather like these character discussions. That said, my faves are:

No, I wasn't a huge fan of Garrus either. He's alirght...but here goes nothing:
He felt almost as forced on me as Liara did in the end...

Actually, I want to add Cortez and Traynor. Eyezonlyii's avatar just reminded me. They grew on me the most out of ME3 characters. I didn't like that squad as much as before.
Yea, I may or may not have an unhealthy love for Cortez *ahem*. I just wish that there was at least one mission fo each where they had to be a temp squaddie.
I would have been in heaven if there was a mission where you have to escort Cortez to a Trident so he can fly support for the Normandy. Especially because we HEAR how much of a great pilot he is, but we never see it, except in the Ciadel DLC.
For Taynor, I would have had her in EDI's place for the invesigative parts of Leviathan, with maybe a surpise encounter where she has to kill somone for the first time and feal with the emotional aftermath

I'd like to fit Traynor somewhere like that, but I think EDI makes the most sense.. seeing that the themes of Leviathan go back their own proclivity to build an AI "helper". Shepard is, ironically, in the same position while investigating Leviathan.
The thing I like most about Traynor is she's in the same weird middle ground as Shepard (or at least my Shepard). She helps rescue Grissom, but she'll also make some defenses for Cerberus later on.. since she turns out to be one of the survivors of Horizon. She's one of the "Lost" when ME2 had those marketing campaigns back in the day: Fight for the Lost. She helps remind you that your time there wasn't a complete waste of time.

Does she? I thought she only defended Shepards involvement in Cerberus while calling them bastards.

I don't remember the exact lines.. but yeah, it's more about Shepard.. I just think it's cool you at least get some acknowledgement that you tried to do some good. ME3 otherwise has a way of making ME2 feel like a colossal waste of time.
edit: Not sure when it pops up. Might be the Cerberus scientist mission, when she talks about how the Alliance was doing nothing back then and how she was visiting her parents on Horizon.

true, but at the same time it's a giant puzzle. and we all know how traynor likes puzzles! Even better, combine her mission with Cortez and BAM! double whammy! One squad is Shepard, Cortez and Traynor (because they need Shepard's combat expertise), with the other squad consisting of your choice as a distraction for whatever forces are present. Sam needs to go to connect the Trident's communications system with the Normandy. It's an escort mission so to speak, but neither of them are truly useless.
Steve: Overload, Incendiary Grenade, and Tech Armor
Sam: Energy Drain, Sabotage, Decoy
