I still say that Varric would make a great LI.  I'm not sure it's a likelihood since we've never had a dwarven LI before, and I'm sure it might be a tad awkward to romance him as a human Inquisitor,

Just more incentive for people to play non-human Inquisitors... Image IPB

but damnit, we could romance any LI in Origins as a dwarf, so why not?!

Exactly! Image IPB

Of course I would bet money that Varric's personality is a bit darker for Inquisition, so if he were to be an LI I'd probably still go for him, but the whole reason I want Varric as one is because his personality in DA2 was awesome.

Kind of reminds me of Anders from DA:A to DA2. I hope the writers don't go that route again. Image IPB

I doubt we'd see quite so drastic a change--though I was never all that upset by Anders' altered personality, I should say.  I felt it was natural to his character arc.  I think a darker, more depressed Varric would probably be natural, too.  At least from what little we've seen, he seems quite affected by the devastation of war.

I don't typically play dwarves.  I prefer human, and Dalish elves as a close second.  But I'd probably play a dwarf for Varric.  :D

Meh.  Talking about the male LI companions is the expected response to the standing OP question, so the whoops is on KC_prototype for a misleading title, and for not just changing it rather than complaining several times in-thread that we're all off-topic.

Then again, most people would probably still just spend the time debating which beards to romance.:pinched:

Well, surely you have enjoyed the discussion about all the romance possibilties.:P

LOL.  Of course I have; when did I say otherwise?  :)

While I personally see Varric as more of a brother character to my Hawke and Inquisitor, I certainly wouldn't mind having him become an LI in the DAI. Especially if someone romanced him as a big Qunari.:P
In some respects, I believe he got some measure of closure in the comics regarding Bianca. Perhaps his quest would deal with shutting that door forever, and I would really like to see how that would work in conjunction with a romance. I think Bioware could pull that off very well.

I don't have a problem at all with having for LIs people who are seriously broken in some fundamental way.  But I wouldn't at all mind having an LI who is still more or less even-keeled, psychologically.  To have had the option to romance either Varric or Aveline in DA2 would've been nice.

That works too. Varric, I believe, is still very broken over Bianca, having clearly loved her greatly, and despite gaining some measure of closure in the comics. At the same time, I enjoyed helping Aveline get a second chance at love, even if it wasn't the PC. It still made for a great companion quest, and I personally laughed my a** off, especially with Isabela in the party.

Still feels like kind of a bait and switch to deny us characters we fall for their chipper, snarky personalities, only to be able to romance them in the next game after they become shell-shocked shadows of their former selves. Contrary to what the writers think, some of us like cheerful, chipper, snarky romances. ='(

Oh, you're missing out then. I'll admit I did not have that much interest in dwarves either until I tried the DC just to try out all the Origins, and was just blown away by how fun and under-rated they were. With supposedly only 5% of players even trying dwarves, I think they can use all the incentive they can get. ^^

I love Aveline's quest to get Donnic. I also had Isabella in my party for that one. I hope we have more companion interactions and quests like that in DAI.

I will say that Aveline and Isabela's relationship was one of the best that I enjoyed. Both were great. I hope we can get just as good companion interactions, LI or no.

I think they've already done a better job of developing Varric's "darker personality" both in DA:II and the comics. The major gripe I think most people had with Anders' character development was that it was too sudden, and it kind of was, too much happened off screen and too little of it happened on screen. Varric, on the other hand, has already had quite a bit of on screen character development. We see his weariness and bitterness as a direct result of all the friends and loved ones he's lost, all the people he, or the people he's looked to as heros, have failed to save, it all happens on screen, right before our eyes, and that makes a world of difference.

This smoother transition also makes me feel more confident that the parts of Varric we grew to love will still be there during DA:I, especially given his lovely "outclass by the ladies again" line during the demo.

Cas and Viv look like they'll be our kickass female duo for this game...With Cas as my Warrior and Viv as my healer, I fear the rest of my party are all going to end up competing for the single remaining spot. It's going to be so tough to choose if the two of them and Varric end up being LI options for a female PC.

I hated the Aveline/Donnic thing. Always felt Aveline should have been a Li for hawke. Don't understand why the Bioware writers thought Aveline was ugly, if the reports are true.
Looking more likely my Inquisitor won't be attracted to any of the male party members, if the speculation about the party composition is true.

All of the romance options will be available for the male protag. Sorry to burst anyones bubble, but as of yet we can deduce from various statements from developers that all of the LIs will be available to every protag.

While some may feel this is unrealistic (who gives a crap?) the dev's have clearly indicated that they don't have the resources to develop an incredibly wide arrange of characters, so out of fairness what they do have access to will be player sexual. Boo hoo to those who are against it!

Nope the devs have actually said the complete opposite of what you're saying, and no this has nothing to to do with preference or whether or not is realistic or anything like that since my characters are usually BI or Straight.

And for the record both Gaider and I are against player sexual but not bi sexual since they are 2 different things entirely.

2) I dislike the idea of every character being sexually available to the player. Not that it cheapens them, necessarily, but it would lend itself towards their objectification.

Jonathan Perry interview

Finally, how will romancing work in the game? Is it the same kind of deal as previous BioWare games, or can anyone romance anyone?

Jp I wouldn't say that anyone can romance anyone, but there will certainly be characters who fancy a certain type of person more than another.

We haven't really been able to comment on how many of your followers will be 'romance-able' or who will be 'romance-able', but we do have a whole lot of interesting combinations.

Romance is a really important part of our storytelling, and we really want to give the player a lot of options there.

social.bioware.com/%20http:/social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/371/index/17572518/1#17573080

Ah. So that’s what all the anonymous tweets shouting “biphobic” at me this past weekend have been about. For those who’ve decided the “playersexual” comment is something I came up with, I’ll just say it’s not.

There are a group of DA fans who insist on calling the DA2 romances that, however— hence why I said “whatever you want to call them” and put it in quotes. I don’t agree with the term, but there you have it.

In terms of bisexuality and our romances, I’ve discussed them numerous times before. Here, or here, for instance.

My saying that I don’t think players have the right to romance any character no matter who they’re playing is not the same as saying that bisexuality doesn’t exist or that BioWare will suddenly remove bisexual romances from our games.

As I’ve said before, my ideal would be to have an array of sexualities— including bisexuality— if there were enough romance plots to go around. Failing that, having bisexual romances is still the fairest way to go.

So I hear what you’re saying (as in the plural “you”), and I see I also typo’d “playersexual” in my original post— sorry about that— but the anger here is misdirected. Plain and simple.

dgaider.tumblr.com/

At no point did your quotes say that the LI's would not be available to PC's of both genders.

"As I’ve said before, my ideal would be to have an array of sexualities— including bisexuality— if there were enough romance plots to go around. Failing that, having bisexual romances is still the fairest way to go."  Exactly what I said in my initial post.

"Jp I wouldn't say that anyone can romance anyone, but there will certainly be characters who fancy a certain type of person more than another.

We haven't really been able to comment on how many of your followers will be 'romance-able' or who will be 'romance-able', but we do have a whole lot of interesting combinations."

This does not mean that the LI's will not be available to each gender but may depend on the actions of the PC.

I am well aware that David Gaider would prefer to have a multitude of sexual orientations, but as my initial post says, he is willing to say that given the financial and companion limitation, the best compromise is to have all of the LI's available to every protag regardless of gender.

I don't remember ever hearing BW thought Aveline was ugly. If they did, that seems silly since it would be their fault and they could fix it after all, lol. If anything, I remember several of them in interviews saying Aveline was their favorite character.

I fear I won't like the romance options for females either if the rumors are true it's Cullen and Varric. Don't get me wrong, Varric is awesome but it'd feel really akward to romance him with a non dwarf inquisitor. Maybe I am selfish or something to not want to romance a guy that short? At least to me, for now, I can't say how I'd feel in game. Garrus is easily the FUGLIST LI in the ME games but he's still the best personality wise for me and hey, it's not like I have to make out with him, lol.

I've never really been a fan of Cullen either. I was only happy when I saw him in DA2 because I squee'd over having Anders real voice, lol.

well I heard the writers wanted Aveline ugly.
For me that only left Isabela and Merrill as Lis. I didn't like the others.
Well there's Varric, so called iron bull qunari, a possible Tevinter mage dorian, cole the undead, a grey warden nameless so far, and Cullen, those are the possibilities WE KNOW OF.
Some right, some wrong . If that list is close to being right I am hardly enthralled.

I can't romance Varric, he's too dudebro for me to see him as a possible LI. Had enough of forced friendships with crazy mages so the Tevinter is out. Also had enough of undead spirit people things so no way to Cole.

That leaves Cullen, Warden, and perhaps Iron bull for me. If these three options are out then I guess my Inquisitor will get no lovin' Image IPB

And Aveline is hardly ugly.

Keep the faith!
And Gaider pretty much nixed the whole Cole romance idea a couple of pages ago.
