I had read Chris L'Étoile's post in those forums, and it's neat to learn about their creative process. It has nothing to do with modern geopolitical controversies; from a writing effort point of view, it's amazing how talended people like him manage to draw elements from reality to enrich a fictional civilization they had to conceptualize from scratch.

Exactly. But some people are obsessed with political correctness even in the most innocent matters like creative inspiration.

Often because of poor expansion on the analogy and how hotheads exascerbate the conversation.

EDIT: Poor Star Fury is gonna come back and see that the thread imploded. :D

When I woke up and saw 9 additional pages of heated discussion, it wasn't something I expected tbh.

The Geth - Quarian debate I presume. Does this unit have a soul vs making a home for Tali. =]

Racism is there in Mass Effect, but it is not portrayed in depth, but more as something to "get over with". The trilogy would've been radically different if racism had been more of a focus subject, and we would've been more busy keeping the different species out of eachother's hairs (or scales for that matter) than figuring out what was going on exactly. It wouldn't have felt as if Shepard had been a soldier/spectre, but more like Shepard was a policeman/politician.

Maybe Bioware can make a spinoff from the series with a private investigator or mercenary protagonist sometime, which is an angle that could go more in depth to society instead. But Shepard was primarily a soldier, with a lot of clearance because of his/her spectre status, and because of Shepard being primarily a soldier, the primary focus was external threats, rather than internal.

If racism was the focal point of the story, no doubt the reapers would simply not exist, since issues of race would be something best suited to drive a conflict that's strictly between two or more species, rather than everyone vs. the machine gods.

Here is my take on racism:
Racism is delusion of superiority; the truly superior cannot be racist.

Reaper of ME1 and ME2 are superior. In ME3, not so much.

I think Mass Effect devs were going for a celebrated-differences multicultural type of society, which would naturally include some racist undertones.

Sure, racism was one of ME themes and not a main one. Bioware did something similar with elves in DA universe but there it's much more straightforward.

Ok, Iet's star a flame war here:

Did you know that out of the 20 millions people that died during the holocaust, only 6 millions were Jews?

Have fun with that.

This was a good thread... up until (but not including) the second page. It's about exhibitions of racism/xenophobia in-game, not among the players' opinions on the species.

I thought it was lame that "human identity" movements were presented in extremes. On one side, it was Cerberus. On the other it was being kind of...multicultural just for the sake of it, lacking backbone, and appeasing the Council and wanting "blue babies". Like being the exact thing al-Jilani accuses Paragon Shepard of. I wanted to forge a third option. I thought that'd be an important contribution Shepard could make. A state of mind where people don't have to feel ashamed of who they are and have some pride, but also work together with anyone welcoming. You can do it subtly, I guess, but it doesn't stand out as much as I like. Like the friendships between Shep, Wrex, and Garrus (especially Renegades) represents something new. Promoting ideas like Grissom/Ascension are setting humanity on a more productive course of research and development than Cerberus ever would as well - without being xenophobic.

Mordin's words still stand out.. about how the universe demands diversity. The fun is just trying to balance it.

I actually found myself agreeing with Saracino's argument in ME1. From the name of the quest itself and the gratuitous racists in the crowd, we obviously weren't supposed to, but they could have done some interesting things with him.

Here's one example.

I don't care about Saracino either way, because they dropped the ball on it (we don't hear about Terra Firma much  again, because all the human stuff gets distilled into Cerberus in ME2. And then bastardized further and demonized in ME3). I do like how they place him right after you get screwed by the Council though. Perfect timing.

I like supporting that guy Keeler who needs the mental stimulant. He's a twirp, but it's for a good cause.

It's certainly better done than any other science fiction game IP I've seen so far. Beats the hell out of WH40k with its... idiocy, for lack of a better word.
