There is a long history of exploitation of women in a rather male-oriented society. They are either seen as less capable than men, or as object to be lusted over or degraded in other ways by men. That attitude has changed for the better in America at least (since I can only speak on the society I live in) but the gap has by no means closed. I, personally, view any sex scenes more explicit than in ME1 to be "over the top" in regards to appealing to the young, male demographic that games tend to be focused towards, and in this viewpoint, it continues that exploitation of the feminine that is still a subtle element to much of our society, especially the media.

The human body, by itself, is not an abhorrent thing. Far from it, as much nude art isn't erotic or "disgusting" and can be highly evocative of many different themes, even something as simple as the celebration of the human form. However, there is a societal viewpoint that needs to be addressed in this kind of debate, and I feel that American society (in specific) still has not progressed to the point where this type of nudity wouldn't be, on some level, female exploitation. "Look! Boobs! Go buy our game!"

I believe that Bioware feels the same way, at least to a certain extent, given their comments on this issue in the past. ME1 had scenes that were tasteful and elegant (given the medium), expressed the emotions involved in the relationships they culminated, and tread that line between art and exploitation quite well, in my opinion. I agree that ME2, ME3, DA:O and DA2 didn't do as good of a job with the romance scenes, but hopefully DA:I will do a better job of this.

Again, all of this is my opinion, and is in no way intended to disparage anyone else or their viewpoints on the matter.

I personally thought ME3 did a great job with the love scenes. At least with the Kaidan and Liara ones. ME2 Miranda scene was also well done. My only issue with DA;O is that it looked like they were doing it outside instead of inside a tent. DA2, I had the most problems with. That fade to black then full armor crap has got to go.

DA:O bordered on a little too explicit for me, personally, but not so much that I'm overly offended by them.  ME3 had some good ones, the ones you mentioned for example.  However it had some cringeworthy scenes as well, specifically Traynor's shower scene.  There should have been nudity, but obscured by camera angles, etc, and Shepard should have been shown to start taking her clothing off, then shut the door, end scene.  Taking a shower in underwear, then having a fully clothed Shepard join her was just too lulzy for my tastes.

I don't want Witcher style scenes, 'cause that goes back to my original post, but I don't want to be so tame that the "Shower Scene™" happens again.  I'd rather fade to black than either of these extremes, but my preference is ME1 style (or ME3 Liara or Kaidan scenes).

Graphic violence including lots of blood and gore, political discourse, implications of rape, demon possession, the broodmother, and religious analysis are all good, but nudity bad?

Whatever BW does, just don't do anything stupid. Like the OP said, either do love scenes maturely, tastefully and sensibly (no underwear) or don't do them at all.

Once again, people are confusing 'maturity' and 'taste' with their own personal preference.
