the only thing you can change i think is their outfit for looks.
This time around they want you to focus on personalizing shepard.

Yeah you get to choose from 2 different armours to equip Shepard with. (well 6 if you got the pre-order and CE bonuses)

Nope most of the different armours they have shown were different variations of the N7 armour, there are only 2 armours in the standard edition of the game but the N7 armour makes up for that with a ton of customization options.
If you look at all the armours in the customization vids they all have the N7 logo.

As n7 didnt really have a head piece
then the n7 chest can be changed to a great variation of things iwth different effects.
Saw screenshot of some of them.like 10% headshot dmg.THread here somewhere has it.

Whereas ME1 had 3 armors (light, medium, and heavy) and all they changed were the colors, ME2's N7 armor-class alone has a wide array of different pieces of which you can change the color yourself. Each separate interchangeable piece has a completely different construction and is associated with different stat bonuses.
So, this is how it is: ME1 had 3 armors. ME2 has at least 4 armors for the head alone with many pieces left unrevealed. It would be more accurate to state that the standard ME2 comes with 2 armor classes, not just 2 armors.

Guest-68: are squad member outfits merely alternative appearances or do they incorporate stat differences and/or research upgrades?
CaseyH-ME2:We found that the main attraction to customizing appearance was on your own character, and managing armor etc on all 10 squad members would be onerous. So we deepened the customizability of Shepard's armor so now you can do it piece by piece, and we made the appearance of your squadmembers more of an aesthetic choice that you earn by gaining their loyalty."

Too bad
Personally, I'm glad the resources were devoted to amping up Shep's armor customization. Plus, doing this freed the team to create more varied models for the squaddies since they don't have to conform to Shep's armor.
Why would all these teammates wear what you told them to, anyway? They volunteer to join you as a favor, they aren't under your employ. I'd rather get a better role-play experience out of being Shep than get the diluted role-play of somehow inexplicably being everyone.

So all and all I'm really happy with that level of customization.
As for squadie armor, it doesn't really bother me in the least. Especially since these guys aren't really soldiers in the same way as the first game.
And honestly it always felt weird to have Shep look at a squad member and say "Out of that armor mister... wear this instead!" I keep thinking that everytime I change armor for a squad mate they are just happy he didn't have a pink too-too for them to wear.

Yeah i think the confusion is that calling it an "N7 armour" might not be the right way to think about it, the N7 badge might be a sticker/decal that we can change or remove when we create it. There's going to be a ton of different pieces to construct totally new and unique armours. I don't think the N7 is the armor, it wasnt in ME 1, (onyx) so i don't see why it would be now.

Can we make our squadmates look like friggin' Space Marines, or they will stride the battlefield looking like fashion show contestants as it is depicted in the promo vids?
Secondary question:
Will there even be hazardous/vacuum environments?
