I recently got ME3, and after finishing the single player, which was pretty fun and all, I tried multiplayer. After about a week and a half of playing, I've unlocked a few characters and weapons from Silver and Bronze. I'd like to jump into Gold, but I am unsure if I could and if I'd be good enough that people would even want me there. I do decently enough, but I don't have superb weapons or gear. I suppose I could Volus Adept and Shield Boost my team to victory (Hopefully), but I'm not sure how people would like that. So, I would like to ask the BSN community - when do you think is a good time to move from Silver to Gold difficulty?
When should I go Gold?

People would hate you shield boosting your team to victory because of the lock up glitch. Just post your GT and platform and I am sure that many people would welcome you in their games, gold or platinum. And you will learn a thing or two from the wealth of great players that we have here.
And a good time to move up is when you find yourself breezing through silver no problem. It should feel pretty obvious to you. This sounds cheesy but you will be the best judge for yourself.

Do not shield boost your team to victory.
Can you link your manifest? How's your situational awareness?

When you can solo Tinfoil.

A good metric is when you can making through silver pugs pretty consistently without dying, you'd do ok in gold.
The only way to know if you're ready for gold however is to try it. Just be well prepared.

Please don't shield boost your teammates to victory. I find it really annoying.
White or giant against reapers is one of the easiest gold setups for beginners. I'd start with that and work your way up to the other factions and maps. Be sure to use consumables on gold.
Do not make the jump with the jugg or a volus. Your teammates might end up hating you. Use the Hsent or an infiltrator instead.

Ideally, do it with the people you play the most with, or have the most synergy with, when you play. If you have access to experienced Gold players on your platform, all the better. A lot of the basics of Gold are easiest to grasp when you have someone there to help coach you, or who at least has your back.
Making the jump to Gold can be quite difficult if you do it by PuGing (playing with random players.) These days, you have a decent chance of running into a strong player or two who can carry you, but the investment, in terms of equipment and consumables used, is likely to be high enough for you (at this stage) to make the risk of PuGing unpalatable.

My criteria is simple : when you can manage Bronze without any gear , then you can manage Silver with gear.
When you can manage Silver without any gear , then you can manage Gold with gear. The same goes for platinum.
Not every character is suitable for Gold at your current skill level, try playing with a good kit that you score high on silver. And avoid hard maps and the Collectors until you get the feel for Gold.

When silver is a breeze, jump up. Volus and Juggernauts don't make you gold ready; being able to handle yourself with confidence does, with a variety of kits & weapons.
Don't wait for your weapons; you can play gold with the common weapons if you know what you're doing. When I wanted to make the leap, I asked the same question but it's best to jump in and find your way.

When silver starts getting boring and you're wrecking the enemies around you with ease, that's when you know you're ready. Make the jump to gold with character/loadout you do well with. As mentioned before, avoid using the juggy and volus shield spamming tactic.

Others have already mentioned that when Silver feels fairly easy, it might be time to jump.
It's definitely a different feel going from Silver to Gold, though.
I recommend a hardy kit or maybe just a simple power-based one, especially if you're lacking in very powerful guns. Jeremiah, who posted earlier, has a link in his sig to a Human Sentinel build that is great for doing a lot of damage on Gold without needing to have awesome guns or a lot of equipment.
I'm biased, but I would also recommend Turian Sentinel (and Mattock, since you likely have one by now). He's got really good powers (Warp and Overload), has good passives to make weapons perform better, and he's got a lot of survivability, which will make the heavier-hitting enemies of Gold a little less scary to start with. If interested, I can recommend a good starter build (don't go by the current build in my N7 manifest link; it's a bit jacked up from some specialty matches I've been doing lately).
I also see you are on PS3. So am I. I'd be more than happy to run some Golds with you, give advice in the field, and help you earn some credits to build that manifest up. Feel free to shoot a friend request to DragonRacer13.
Also, linking your manifest here will help us see what you have unlocked and make some recommendations on kit/weapon combos. You can get to your manifest by clicking that "Prepare for the Retaliation at the N7 HQ" advertisement block on the left-hand side of your screen (under your "logout" button). Copy-paste that link into this thread.
Finally, there is a wealth of information stored in the ME3 MP Resource Library. The link is in my sig and it's also stickied to the top of the forum. There are some good links in there on how to improve your gameplay and about making the jump to Gold.

There are a lot of helpful people on this thread as well as several good resources (including the resource library at the top of the multiplayer discussion page with really good videos and tutorials for moving into gold). My offer still stands...send me a friend request, and we'll start getting you some gold credits to build your manifest.

If you can extract on Silver Collectors then you are ready to jump into Gold.
Another way to gain confidence is to practice by doing Solo Gold for the first 1-3 levels.
A lot of people don't have a problem helping newbies on Gold. But, I don't want to keep reviving you more than 2 or 3 times per wave. So, either learn how to use cover, or go with a tank character like the Krogan or Juggies if you want to jump into Gold. Also, try to keep up with the team so they don't have to go very far to help you.

I would be more than happy to answer your questions in game and I will revive you as many times as you need reviving. It's important to figure out how to survive in gold and I can help you do that.

A week seems pretty soon to get into Gold, but...
Do you have a decent Level X Uncommon weapon (Tempest, Mattock, Eviscerator, Raptor, Incisor, Mantis) with useful mods in both slots?
Do you have a useful Gear?
Do you have your Gel/Rocket/Ops/Clips capacities increased (preferably 4 at least), a decent stock of these consumables and a willingness to use them when necessary?
Do you have a decent stockpile of Level I-II consumables from your Veteran Packs, and a willingness to use them?
Do you feel pretty comfortable and confident on Silver, fairly sure you'll extract most of the time?
If you answer every question with a yes, then give Gold a go. Perhaps with a class more reliant on powers than guns. If you don't die a crazy amount over the match and end up with a score of 60K+, you're probably alright to stay in Gold. If not, you may need more time in Silver.
A Shield Boost spamming Volus is a poor choice IMO. The Shield Boosting is more annoying than it is helpful, outside of a bad Hack/Escort mission, and they need a good gun. Perhaps try something like Human Sentinel.
Tip: when you're starting out in Gold, you don't want to be in a team full of people who are also Gold noobs. Look for someone with N7 >120, more than a few thousand CP, Level X Rare or mid level UR, and full load of consumable equipment. You want at least one, and preferably two of such people on your team.

With friends, right now.
With pugs, I would recommend waiting til you have maybe 5 medi gels and/or rockets if you don't want to fail too much. Just in case.

Brief glance at your manifest, I'd like to make some recommendations on pack purchases.
It's very tempting to buy the more expensive packs because of wanting to unlock the gold/rare characters and guns. Try to avoid that temptation. They will come in time, and not as long a wait as you might think.
Try to keep buying recruit packs until all your common weapons and common weapon mods are maxed. The weapon mods are the most important, as you'll use a lot of the common/uncommon ones on all of your weapons moving forward, so you want to max those as soon as possible. When the recruit packs stop spitting up good stuff, move to Veteran Packs and stay there for a little while. THEN, move to the Spectre Packs and the other, more expensive ones. By going that route, you do your manifest better justice and you spend your money more wisely. Going this route also helps you stock up on your consumables (medigel, rockets, thermal clips, ops packs, and the equipment you put on that only lasts for one match), which you WILL need and will need in abundance.

Browsing through your manifest, I see that you haven't deployed the Turian Sentinel yet. Most people around here will tell you that the TSent is one of the most well rounded kits out there. Here is a build that gives you good survivability, weapon damage, and enemy debuffing: kalence.drupalgardens.com/me3-builder#43!3163522!!21G13312!5F9A5O.
Turn on tech armor and keep it on for the damage reduction. Use overload for shields and to stun non-boss enemies. Warp is one of the best debuff powers in the game that you use on the boss enemies...followed by shots from your weapon of choice, of course.
As DragonRacer has said, you need to work on maxing out your common and uncommon weapon attachments and weapons...so recruit packs and veteran packs for the time being. It will be the best bang for your buck in the long run.

It's threads like this that make BSN seem like the lair of a bunch of teddy bears! But some people are actually nice. Shocking I know.
Wish I could help (PC I'm afraid) but it seems you're getting a bunch of good advice and offers of help. I'd say wait for gold pugs until you have a decent mattock and a tough class (eg TSent). Odds of hitting a decent lobby seem good to me these days, and there are so many experienced players you should be fine at least half the time.
As mentioned, DO NOT be that shield boost spammer. It's ok if everyone knows how to deal with the lockup, but first time it happened to me I was not happy.
Good luck and enjoy. It's the best of ME in one yummy package.
