Do you think he would have been able to unseat Garrus as the fanbase's favorite bro?

Back when ME1 was first released he seemed to be the fan favorite.

Don't want to think about it and the inevitable Wrex romance.

Wrex is much more concerned with the Krogan's fate than the Reapers. He could never replace Garrus on Shepard's squad.

Garrus is the Turian Shepard, but there is no Krogan Shepard. Or any other Shepard, except maybe Prothean Shepard (Javik).

Garrus is unique in this respect.

There are characters who are drawn to Shepard with a personal connection but are ultimately much more vested in the destiny of their own species: Wrex, Mordin, Tali, Legion, Javik

There are characters who form cordial relationships with Shepard but are ultimately temporary recruits (unless romanced, of course): Thane, Samara, Zaeed, Kasumi

There are characters who may form strong bonds with Shepard but are first and foremost just cooworkers by chance: Ashley, Kaidan, Miranda, Jacob, James

There is one character who struggles to find her purpose, and relies on Shepard as her guide: EDI

There is one character who is unconditionally and fanatically loyal towards Shepard because.. reasons: Liara

And there is one character who can actually be Shepard, one who learns everything he could from Shepard and would take up the task to rid the galaxy of criminals (including the Reapers) with the same enthusiasm Shepard had, regardless of what else happens:

GARRUS. VAKARIAN.

In my opinion no(I really don't understand why people acts like Wrex's the best thing since sliced bread). However from what I've seen, a lot of the fans prefer Wrex to Garrus anyway so I'd say yes.

I've always liked them both. Garrus and Wrex were the team I used most in ME1, and they're two of my favorite characters throughout the whole trilogy. As much as I enjoyed having Wrex in my squad, I wouldn't want to change his role in the later games though. The genophage arc was one of the best parts of ME3, in my opinion, and Wrex is a big part of that. It would have been nice to have him as a temporary squadmate for those missions.

Like hell Garrus would take up the task to rid the galaxy of Reapers. A few months without Shepard and, despite knowing the Reapers were coming, he resigned himself to die a pointless death on a criminal rock where he wouldn't change anything.

I don't think so. Wrex is too renegade, too willing to disagree with Shepard.

Universal popularity requires a certain level of inoffensiveness.

Was Wrex a fan favorite?

I actually had one game where I didn't speak to him the whole game, even though I took him on every mission. Shepard asked him if he had any stories to tell. He said no, go ask the Quarian for stories. So Shepard said OK, and went and talked with the Quarian.

Shepard told Anderson he'd rather stay and fight on Earth. If Garrus found the primarch, maybe he would have told Garrus to go off and get support for the Turians

Wrex was much better than Garrus in ME1 and still had some great lines in ME2. He was excellent gameplay and lorewise, probably the best party member in combat. *And in Grunt's voice* "He is KROGAN!"

Too bad Wrex can be killed on Virmire(I know some blame Ashley). ME3 is poor without him(and Mordin, Legion).

If Wrex was a squadmate in each game, then the Krogan would never get the future they deserve. The genophage might be cured, but it would be Krogan Rebellions all over again.

Wrex + Eve = Krogan Rebirth

I think Wrex would be too senior to be Shepard's "bro".

If Wrex was on the Normandy SR-2 for the Collector mission, it'd probably mean he didn't go back to Tuchanka (or was forced out), leaving him even more bitter about krogan than ME1. I don't think he'd direct any bitterness towards Shepard - he would probably see his adventures with Shepard as a highlight of his life - but I don't think he'd be emotionally developed enough to be as concerned for Shepard's personal welfare (vs. Cerberus) the way Garrus (and Tali) are. Wrex would be more of a grumpy old veteran like Zaeed was.

This. The whole genophage arc largely hinges on the leader of the krogan, and anyone other than Wrex in charge just wouldn't look good. Besides, given his characterization in ME1, the character deserved to go out of Shepard's command.

As others have said, Wrex was essential to the Genophage arc, Wreave just didn't cut it. So without rewriting all that, no, Wrex couldn't have replaced Garrus.  And there would have been no Grunt. Much as I loved Wrex, I thought Grunt was awesome! All the bulk, killing force, unstoppable might, of a Krogan - teenager! Yeah!

Garrus was definitely scripted as Shep's 2IC, and i remember chat on these boards before ME3 came out about Shep stunting the growth of Garrus who was ready to go out and run his own team. Well, he did, and he did make a difference on Omega as is said to you in various sources. And I don't mean just getting the gangs to unite against him.. ^_^
What Garrus lacked from ME1 to 2 was the ability to pick himself back up after his betrayal. Shep can do that, though she (fem Shep here) never faced what Garrus faced, a squad killed permanently under her by betrayal.

I like it done as it is, to be honest. I really like Garrus, and although I missed Wrex in 2, I loved having Grunt in his place.

I would have liked the option to recruit Grunt in ME3. I missed having a krogan in my squad.

Im currently slow playing the franchise untill tge district, destiny, and dayz get released on the ps4. In 10 hours into ME1 and wrex hasnt left my squad. The only downside is i have to bring a techie squadmate with since im prenovagaurd. Im trying to soak in as much wrex as i can.

Wrex is no doubt the very best wingman in the ME universe. ImpOssible to kill with an attitude to match. I dont care what wrex means to his race. Any number of krogans can and would replace him from grunt to wreave to therum krogans brother. Wrex belongs at shepards side busting skulls and biting heads off.

Garrus is a solid number 2. If there wasnt already wrex.
