I know where Mass Effect should go.

I have no interest in a prequel or any alternate universe nonsense either.

I detest the idea of a prequel as much as you do, but why not an alternate universe?

It would be the same but new, the sense of mystery and wonder would be back and you wouldn't have to worry about anything that happened before.

An AU seems just as troublesome, mainly because it would have to abandon quite a lot of things from the original trilogy to not come off as a retread of the old stories. Take the relays. The biggest thing in the entire series is the realization that the infrastructure everyone depends on were indeed created by the enemy. In order to bring back that sense of mystery, this would have to be replaced by something else, and I don't expect that substitute to be any good.

I actually don't recall a close-ended trilogy (or whatever) that benefited from a sudden additional installment. It's safe to say the next game can only be completely perpendicular to the ME trilogy or it will cause harm.

Ah, so they do a perpendicular one (like ME Reach or ME ODST), then in about 4 years they bring back Shepard for a sequel in the real ME4.

I'd most want to see a sequel set a few centuries after the events of the Shepard trilogy.

That being said, Mac Walter's recent statements seemed to indicate they were working on something other than a sequel. Prequel, alternate universe, or same continuity but different galaxy is looking likely.

A different galaxy is basically an entirely new set of lore from top to bottom, as every single species would be unknown to the player, not to mention that the PC would also be a non-human, which, to me, would be a mistake. In this case, BioWare would just be better off abandoning Mass Effect and just creating a new IP instead if they're going to do that.

The PC wouldn't necessarily have to be a non-human. They could have the protagonist be an explorer that jumps through an uncharted relay to the Andromeda galaxy for example, only to get stranded on the other side. Of course that would mean entirely new hub(s) and species though, and beyond the protagonist's own ship everything familiar would be left behind.

I'd much rather see a sequel personally, but I'd be more interested in a different galaxy setting than a prequel or alternate universe reboot. Its the least bad alternative for me.

BSN's view is pathetically limited!
